Garvan Nets Late Equaliser for Irish U21s
Garvan Nets Late Equaliser for Irish U21s
Tuesday, 13th Oct 2009 22:04

Town’s Owen Garvan netted an injury time goal to give his Republic of Ireland U21 side a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in a European Championships qualifier in Waterford. Garvan was skippering his team and won his 13th U21 cap.

The Dubliner hit a low shot which beat the Swiss keeper from inside the area to give his side their third successive draw, Fabian Frei having put the visitors in front on 57.

Town have four other players in international action later this week. Tamás Priskin’s Hungarians still stand a very, very slim chance of finishing second in their World Cup qualifying group but need to beat the already qualified Denmark on Wednesday, hope Portugal and Sweden both lose and that there’s a massive turnaround in goal difference.

Carlos Edwards’s Trinidad and Tobago sit bottom of the six-team North, Central America and Caribbean qualifying table and have no chance of qualification. They complete their fixtures with a game against former Town loanee Giovani Dos Santos and Mexico, who have already qualified, also on Wednesday.

The same night, Gareth McAuley and Northern Ireland play their final qualifier in the Czech Republic (BBC2 NI, 7.20pm, Sky channel 992). The Northern Irishmen must win the match they have to win to stand any chance of finishing second in their group, although realistically they are already out as they require San Marino to beat Slovenia and there to be a major turnaround in goal difference.

On Thursday, academy schoolboy striker Jack Simmons could win his first Wales U16 cap when his side take on England in their opening Victory Shield game (Sky Sports One, 7.30pm).

as in previous post it seems overlooked he dicked up big time to gift them a goal as well so lets see it both ways, iv always been a Garvan fan but im sure there is a geniune reason why he's not in the team, like i say keane cant do right ether way, if he tells us the reason he aint in the team hel get jumped on for criticising a player in public.

WHY is he not good enough ? We are not exactly flying at the moment !

he isn't in the team because he is a one trick pony, ok at passing but useless when we haven't got the ball, we cant afford to carry a passanger in the team

I guess the reason Garvan hasn't been playing for Town is that Trotter has taken his chance pretty well, & nobody can say that Leadbitter should be dropped in place of Garvan, I admire his decision to turn down Col Utd to fight for his place though, thats the kind of personality we need. Once we are able to pick Leadbitter, Norris & Civelli I think our midfield will be superb.

What has happened to the new signings Clegg/Keane promised? another international break has come & gone & still we wait for 2 new centre backs & a striker that we desperately need, there seems to be alot of talk coming out of PR but not alot of action, I hope they have something up their sleeves!!

"What has happened to the new signings Clegg/Keane promised? "
Did they really promise? They may have tried to get loan players, but, as I've said before, we are not an attractive proposition and won't be until we start winning. I'd rather see the squad that we have dig us out of the hole. If they can't, then there have been some serious errors of judgement by the management team at ITFC.

Because Keane is building a side and Garvan ain't good enough. IMO to slow.

At the end of the day, we are playing poor, we need a change. so why not give Garven a run out on saturday? we cant do any worse!!

bedsitfc:
he did make an important clearing header to stop a goal and then immediately raced up the pitch to be the only Rep of Ire player available when the team broke.

No new signings because who'd want to join a club at the foot of the table and let's face it ,obviously nobody really wants to come and play for Roy Keane.

He also gave the ball away out of position for their goal and was unable to run back to get anywhere near a challenge. This wasn't a fluke as he had just been caught two minutes beforehand in a similar manner and attempted a dreadful sliding scythe that was four feet away from making contact with the ball or the player, giving them a goalscoring opportunity.

One of the commentators remarked that he looked a class above the others with his range of passing but a yard off the pace, which is about right I reckon. Of course he needs games but then he could have gone to Colchester.

We all know he's a good player, but his tackling is poor and at the moment he's not, in my opinion, physically strong enough for the Championship, whereas Trotter has a lot to learn football-wise but looks to be physically more capable (although equally ponderous at times). Last season Garvan went on the left when everyone was injured, and looked quite good-maybe we should give him a go in the Gerrard role before Civelli returns? He certainly isn't going to get many games ahead of Legbiter and Chuck (when he returns) in the middle.

Garvan is more suited for the italian game, reminds me of Pirlo (but not quite as good!), needs a bit of time on the ball. He cannot cope with the physical aspect which is why he isn't in our team.

Garvan should be in our team - maybe not when Norris and civelli are abck but why the hell aint he been playing. Another reason why RK has ruined is ruining our club! For the last few eyars he has always been one of our better players yet RK comes ni and think he sees something we and all previous managers dont see. Its a joke I hate the man more everyday!

ROY KEANE OUT - GARVAN IN (midfield not manager)

I know so many things have gone on since his arrival that make me feel sick! He is a prick and is ruining our club! Rhodes and Garvan should have been in the starting line up since the first game of the season! I can promise that if they havd played everygame we owuld not be bottom and we certainly would have won a game.
I cannot see us beating Swansea (although it is def our best chance to get 3 points so far) 0 bottom of the league no wins is dispicable! we will fail to beat Swansea andf then hopefully, if we pray hard enough he will walk away form this shamble he has single handedly created and go back to putting peanut butter on his knob and feeding his dog!

I watched the 2nd half of this game and this article neglects to mention that it was Garvan's mistake which lead to the Swiss's goal!! which just about sums up Garvan as a player.

Garvan is a talented passer and he can create things, however he never seems to bust a gut to track back when he loses the ball or get into the box, mainly spending his time in the centre of the pitch waiting for the ball.

Keane's probably decided that this is not the way he wants his midfield playing and thats why Owen's been dropped.

Having said that I think Garvan should get another go in our first team, even if its coming off the bench and having 20 mins on the pitch.

Give him a run out, let him prove himself or show he isnt up to it. The next few games are against teams that are not in top few places, so we SHOULD get points, [ESPECIALLY AS SOME HAVE GIVEN EXCUSE FOR FAILURE THUS FAR AS TEAMS WEVE PLAYED ARE ALL TOP TEAMS !] we are already playing catch up [but we arn't catching up ] any more bad results over next few weeks then the smelly stuff will really be hitting the fan .[

As soon as Garvan scored my heart sank! Not that i dont want him to do well but that it meant that it would be used as a stick to beat Keane with on this forum by some fans.
The constant sniping is doing no-one any good especially the team who need all the help they can get right now to arrest this poor run.
As for the comment about peanut butter and the dog, that is out of order IMHO however much you may not like someone
