Wednesday: No Firm Wood Bids Friday, 6th Nov 2009 14:44
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws has confirmed that Notts County have shown interest in central defender Richard Wood but says no other club has been in contact and no one has made a firm offer. Wood, who has been transfer-listed by the Owls, was targeted by Town towards the end of August.
Laws says that with the deadline for emergency loans November 26th, any deals will have to come soon: "There is a two-week opportunity where things have got to move quickly.
“While Notts County have made a move, we are waiting for others. No one has made a firm offer. At the end of the day, we have got to the stage where we might have to auction him."
The Wednesday boss, a Nottingham Forest team-mate of Roy Keane’s, says a switch to League Two may not appeal to Wood: "Everybody knows that Notts County will probably be paying fairly good money that we couldn't match, but is it Richard Wood's cup of tea? I would be surprised if he even considered it.”
Coventry City are also understood to be interested in the 24-year-old Osset-born defender.
Meanwhile, Bohemians keeper Brian Murphy, who is set to join the Blues on a free transfer at the end of the Irish season, has been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for their World Cup play-offs against France. It is the 26-year-old’s first senior call.

Why have we not signed Wood? Hes someone we could use, and already proven at this level unlike this Faye guy we seem intent on signing.

I don't know anything about him in terms of how he plays, but he seems pretty money-grabbing though *shrugs*

Wouldn't be much of an improvement on the current squad. I'd steer well clear if i was Keane, seems to want a rather large pay packet too.

There's always a lot of negative assumption whenever idea of Richard Wood being bought crops up.... ....and, as we know, to 'assume' makes an ASS out of U and ME. He's precisely what we were looking for during the last few months: right age (24), right nationality (no settling in period), right size (big bloke who can head it - yet he can run), right status (believes he's one of the best in Sheff Wed squad after years of improvement), right loyalty (been at Sheff Wed since...er..birth?), right on-pitch attitude (captain type) and right ambition (Feels it's time to move up in the world aged 24 - perfect football age for it). I think Brian Laws has been pretty condescending and insulting to him all the way through this....he's Sheff Wed's most loyal player (years of service). Yet again Laws uses a bit of subtle emotional blackmail to restrict the choices of this Wood fella (he'd look a bit silly and greedy if he chose Notts Co after Law's comment above). I'd want to be well shot of manager who wears his bitterness on his sleeve and still won't help this guy's career move up. Richard Wood has said nothing during this whole saga...simply requested a transfer which he is entitled as one of this division's most loyal players and with his contract about to run out. His manager has been a disgrace...Wood must be gagging to get out to a club where they treat him better. Get him in Roy.....we need another central defender...one that might spend a few years here and be a potential captain later on. Please don't think Delaney is the answer after just one game...unless you're drunk, or stupid, of course. If MacAuley goes, we need more than two decent central defenders, all of them aren't exactly the 'first name on the teamsheet'....oh, and we can't get rid of their injuries by using a 'save game editor' - as some seem to think. I've written too much again. How does it happen? This 'working-from-home' lark is not going well.
