Burley Sacked By Scotland
Burley Sacked By Scotland
Monday, 16th Nov 2009 18:44

Former Blues boss George Burley has been sacked by Scotland in the wake of Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Wales. Burley's assistant, former Town skipper Terry Butcher, has also lost his job.

Scottish FA chief executive Gordon Smith said: "It is with regret that we announce George Burley’s departure.

"We now have four months until our next scheduled match, against Czech Republic, and will therefore utilise the intervening period to ensure we attract the best possible replacement to take Scotland forward.

“The decision was taken after a meeting with the board of directors and, subsequently, the national coach. The board was in unanimous agreement.

"It should be stressed that the decision was not a direct consequence of Saturday’s unacceptable 3-0 defeat to Wales but, rather, a realisation that the expectations of the supporters, the Scottish FA and George, himself, were not being met."

Burley said: “I would like to take the opportunity to express my thanks to my backroom team, the Scottish FA, the players and the Tartan Army for the support they have shown throughout my tenure as national coach and I wish the national team success for the future.”

Burley had been manager of Scotland since January 2008.

Meanwhile, former Town chairman David Sheepshanks, still a member of the club board and chairman of the PLC, has been linked with the role of Football League chairman in place of the departing Lord Mawhinney.

Best of luck to you George wherever you end up next?.

A quality manager at league level and we could do no worse than bringing him back to Portman Road to sort out our club - infact i'd carry him there.

I would love to see George Burley come back to Ipswich as manager. Give him time to build the squad, develop the team and bring on young players and I believe we could achieve our ambition of promotion. Importantly, I think he could get us playing good football again and help us move away from the relegation zone. His record has been good at club level, with win ratios of 40% (Colchester), 45% (Ipswich), 36% (Derby), 75% (Hearts) and 41% (Southampton). Keane's win ratio at Sunderland was 42%, but it is only 14% here.

Come on Marcus Evans, give Mr Burley a rung!

langeydong, i agree, given the pool of players available its not a job many will succeed at ,good luck to G B , a decent honest bloke, with a passion for the game,he will do well somewhere at club level,R K seems to be dug in now, seems like he will be given time [to get us relegated],but i for one would not be upset to see George back .

Marcus Evans do the right thing, put Keano out of his misery and bring George back to Portman Road. He knows how to play the Ipswich way and he knows how to get us to the Premiership.

I feel sorry for George and like others hope he finds another club soon. However, sadly it would seem that some people on here have had a memory lapse. It ios with regret that George - along with Jim - were RIGHTLY sacked by ITFC. Why? They failed to deliver in their later roles. Roy has had LESS time than both of the previously mentioned, and deserves time to prove himself. What George proves is that given time you can succeed. Rather than point out useless comments such as 'I'd rather have George anyday of the week over Keane' - why not realise that George needed SEVERAL years to suceed before condeming Roy after less tha half a season? Just a thought.

What Burley did here 1st time around was truly magical.

There aren't that many managers around that i'd have complete faith in offering a very long contract to with the directive of doing what he did here in his previous spell : bringing through our own players & picking up absolute bargains along the way & getting us playing sublime football.

Like we've been mentioning in other posts today,it also started going tits up for George first time around when he was given too much money to spend.

Hope we snap him up before someone else does.
