Keane: We Deserved the Win
Keane: We Deserved the Win
Sunday, 29th Nov 2009 18:50

Boss Roy Keane felt his side deserved the 2-1 victory at Cardiff City. Second half goals from Jon Walters and Jon Stead took the Blues to their second win of the season, Peter Whittingham having put the home side ahead in the first period.

Keane said: "I've had my share of luck here at Cardiff in the past but with the chances we had today I think we deserved to win.

"It was an open game but at half-time I told my players it would be a test of character and they have come through it well.

"The subs played a big part in the victory and, although I have been disappointed with results to date, I have never lost faith in the squad.

"Jon Walters has been a good leader over this difficult period and he scored a superb equaliser, while Jon Stead is starting to make a habit of scoring vital goals for us."

The Blues boss hopes the victory will help his side push on: "Our form has not been too bad but you hope the result can see us kick on now because it's wins we need.

"We had chances before our goal and Jon Walters has scored from the hardest one we had, but what pleased me was that we were creating chances.

"We may have had a bit of luck with the winner but Steady came on and made an impact. Our subs did well for us, Quinner was full of energy and Arran was solid.

"Stern John was a handful for their defence and I was pleased with him. We didn't want to play him for 90 minutes but, with Wrighty going off, we only had two changes we could make. He will be better for the game."

Keane says Wright’s knee injury will be assessed tomorrow: "Wrighty will have a scan on Monday. Obviously it's a blow losing him but we will know more tomorrow.”

The Town boss says Saturday's trip to the Millennium Stadium was intended to get his squad in the right frame of mind for the game: "Players sometimes need a break from the normal routine to relax them. That's why I took them to see Wales play Australia.

"I'm a big rugby fan anyway, so I enjoyed it. But I think the lads enjoyed the spectacle as well.

"They sampled the atmosphere of a 70,000 crowd, had the chance to see the Millennium Stadium.

"I'd like to think that most of them will maybe play before a crowd that size themselves one day."

Dave Jones was unhappy with his team’s second half display: "The players never made the right decisions after the break and it was a game we should never have lost.

"When the crowd went against the players they started to panic and some of them never wanted the ball.

"The midfield and frontline were non-existent and we hardly strung two passes together.

"When you are fighting hard to get something out of a game you have to win the ball in tackles and we didn't even do that.

"I have seen two stoppable goals go in and we need to hold on to the ball more and make the right decisions.

"Players will make mistakes but it is how you respond to them that count and everyone in the dressing room is responsible as that was our worst performance at this ground.

"At the moment we are easy to break down, but we are not a bad team collectively. We have to do better and if the players pull their fingers out we can soon get back on track."

CGS - Still not 100% sure that one, you could possibly have a girlfriend and two, that you could get it up once let alone five times.

What makes me concerned is that you want to call me blueASS - Maybe some reference to a sexual fantasy you want to receive or get off on.

Anyway, you can call me blueass as long as I can call you brownass.....comprende?!

dont get me wrong, am very relieved we got a win yesterday which was crucial in keeping us in touch with the rest. the euphoria seen in some of these posts is overdoing it a bit though - the win doesnt change the fact that keane has shown a total lack of imagination in overloaded our squad with old irish and sunderland rejects. not the man to lead us back to the prem...

Pickles you loving the fact there has been a distinct lack of negativity from CGS?

I can see us winning a few now Garvan is in.

Great win yesterday but let's not celebrate like we've won the league for god's sake - that would really show how far we've fallen.
When we're in the top half and a lot clearer of the bottom 3 i'll be happier.
Keep it up lads.

Hi callum, nice to see you on board.

Yeah same here, If we can win two of the next three games I will be fully on board.

I think he went about it the long way but fcuk it if we get there in the end.

I think it was you that said if we can get two more quality signings in Jan we will be laughing.

I wont say it yet but I may soon be in the 'trusting of Keane' bandwagon!

WAKE UP CGS - he's won 1 game (his second in 18 outings) & only when he reverted basically back to Jims team - Mac, Wright, Garvan, Stead! The whole world knew they were our first choicers over likes of Trotter, Balkestein, Tommy Smith, Colbeck etc

It's the most open league in the world outside the top 2 teams & we're 3rd bottom & have had the worst of it most of the season. Surely he needs to win a lot more before you can forget this start to a season. We were meant to be going to the prem. Now the nugget has just worked out we were just off the prem with Jim's team except it took him 4 torrid months to work it out!

Hence me saying 'I wont say it yet' If we win 3 of our next four games I think we will be ok in terms of saving us from relegation!

ByeBye, Keano has got a massive task to rebuild our club after the hopeless tenure of Magilton. Joe set up Magilton with a good basis of a squad and he did nothing with it and we finished in a worst position.
You forget we are now unbeaten in 7 and will at worst get a draw at Bristol city on saturday. If we are having such a bad season how come we are only 12 points of the playoff's?
Keano is doing something all our other last few managers could not, he had sorted out our defense. It is just a shame that Asmir did not stay for the rest of the season because he has helped give the defense a huge confidence boost.
I am glad you pointed out that there was only D Wright and Mac playing at the back on Sunday and the three others were Keano's.
In Keano we trust.

If he'd played them with our exisitng best players who all proper fans knew - I repeat Wright, Garvan, Mac etc then we wouldn't have wasted so much time. If we'd spent £3.7m better than on Martin & Priskin (whilst offloading Jordan & Haynes) If you think it's an achievement to be 12 points off the playoffs after just 18 games in a league as open as this etc etc.
I want him to keep winning & he can keep the job. I'm behind the team but please don't paint this like it's some sort of planned success!

byebye, of course Keano did not want such a troubled start but of course he is planning to turn Ipswich into a squad of winners.
You must realise the Job Keano has to turn our team into winners than like they were Jim's old hasbeen mates who did not care if we won or lost.

......er but they seemed to win more times than 2 in 18 & were never in the bottom 3. Jim had to go, no arguement. He' was another new manager who will probably have learned from his first spell in charge.

I don't see any big improvement to the squad though, Leadbetter aside. That said, I am behind the team as always & I want us to win.

Delaney , Rossenior, Edwards & Asmir to name a few.

Asmir ain't ours & unfortunately Martin, Priskin, Colbeck, Healey are . .. but I get your point. Let's hope we beat Bristol.

pickles110564 added 18:25 - Nov 30
Colbeck only on loan until Jan, Priskin will come good don't forget he has scored several goals at this standard last season. The jury is still out on Martin and Healy.
I would accept a draw on Saturday, which would mean our unbeaten run is still continuing.
In Keano we trust.

Well I predicted 6 points from the 2 away games and i think its now very much on the cards. You can see how much confidence the win has done for all of us on this site, so just imagine what the mood must be like in the dressing room?

Bring on Bristol......., then 6 points from 2 home games and we'll be sniffing the play-off's.

we still need 9 points form the next 4 games then ill say im backing keane again. We would then be safe in mid table hopefully attracting better players to amke a late push into the playoffs! 12 from 12 isnt impossible though. Hard game at bristol after that 2 home games Peterbourough and Blackpool then Scunthorpe away i think are all very winnable games.

I think Crystal Palace were in a very similar situation to us when the went up under dowie.
