Keane: We Deserved the Win
Keane: We Deserved the Win
Sunday, 29th Nov 2009 18:50

Boss Roy Keane felt his side deserved the 2-1 victory at Cardiff City. Second half goals from Jon Walters and Jon Stead took the Blues to their second win of the season, Peter Whittingham having put the home side ahead in the first period.

Keane said: "I've had my share of luck here at Cardiff in the past but with the chances we had today I think we deserved to win.

"It was an open game but at half-time I told my players it would be a test of character and they have come through it well.

"The subs played a big part in the victory and, although I have been disappointed with results to date, I have never lost faith in the squad.

"Jon Walters has been a good leader over this difficult period and he scored a superb equaliser, while Jon Stead is starting to make a habit of scoring vital goals for us."

The Blues boss hopes the victory will help his side push on: "Our form has not been too bad but you hope the result can see us kick on now because it's wins we need.

"We had chances before our goal and Jon Walters has scored from the hardest one we had, but what pleased me was that we were creating chances.

"We may have had a bit of luck with the winner but Steady came on and made an impact. Our subs did well for us, Quinner was full of energy and Arran was solid.

"Stern John was a handful for their defence and I was pleased with him. We didn't want to play him for 90 minutes but, with Wrighty going off, we only had two changes we could make. He will be better for the game."

Keane says Wright’s knee injury will be assessed tomorrow: "Wrighty will have a scan on Monday. Obviously it's a blow losing him but we will know more tomorrow.”

The Town boss says Saturday's trip to the Millennium Stadium was intended to get his squad in the right frame of mind for the game: "Players sometimes need a break from the normal routine to relax them. That's why I took them to see Wales play Australia.

"I'm a big rugby fan anyway, so I enjoyed it. But I think the lads enjoyed the spectacle as well.

"They sampled the atmosphere of a 70,000 crowd, had the chance to see the Millennium Stadium.

"I'd like to think that most of them will maybe play before a crowd that size themselves one day."

Dave Jones was unhappy with his team’s second half display: "The players never made the right decisions after the break and it was a game we should never have lost.

"When the crowd went against the players they started to panic and some of them never wanted the ball.

"The midfield and frontline were non-existent and we hardly strung two passes together.

"When you are fighting hard to get something out of a game you have to win the ball in tackles and we didn't even do that.

"I have seen two stoppable goals go in and we need to hold on to the ball more and make the right decisions.

"Players will make mistakes but it is how you respond to them that count and everyone in the dressing room is responsible as that was our worst performance at this ground.

"At the moment we are easy to break down, but we are not a bad team collectively. We have to do better and if the players pull their fingers out we can soon get back on track."

UEFA81. In you "Match Report" you claim that Keane is a "menacing dark cloud". We have not lost in 7 games. No we are not in the top half. Yes it will takes more wins to get up the table. Stop stating the Bleeding obvious that we all now . At least we support. Read what support means before you call yourself one.
The only dark cloud hovering over ITFC is you, and you cant see it!!

Really great result.
Garvan's made a telling contribution with both assists and two of our front men have got the goals.
All we need to do is keep the momentum going, turning the home draws into wins and picking up points away.
With Norris & Civelli coming back in the coming weeks we'll have more options.
Another transfer window in January will allow Keane to get rid if some surplus fringe players.
Really pleased about the win and really proud of the majority of fans who have kept the faith in the manager when a lot of people might have expected us to become restless.
We might still be in with a shout of a playoff place if we keep our run going.
Come on the blues!!

not really laziness animal, as i had only just woke up and started work, although im now on a 5 min break, so yes ive read your post and will prob read others later. And i take your point on board, but trotter seems now out the picture after starting so many which also seems little weird, and imo id have a half-hearted garvan over a fully committed trotter, that said though, leaving garvan out and having him get that "kick up the backside" may have a better long term effect.

You see, I've had a very, very hard life and find it difficult to have any trust or faith in mankind, and reading the comments on here is a fascinating example of how fickle people can be.

As for celebrating - never celebrated anything in my life - I don't know how to celebrate. I've always hated partys, never been out at New Year's Eve, not even been to a nightclub and hate pubs. I see the world how it really is - dark, depressing and sinister.

However, I always like my club to do well - and if we do actually make something out of this season (which I very much doubt) then perhaps a little smile may break out on even my ugly mug. But even then it will be kept in perspective. I was an only child you know....

How bitter some people are, and they know who they are!

I appreciate what some people say that until we start actually going on a bit of a run we are still in dire trouble. But For christ sake we just beat a decent championship side, whilst we are still second bottom we aren't getting embarrassed 4-1 at home to Barnsley with not even a full 90 mins played! We look like we are sorting things out, so long may it continue.

How can some of the people who spend the time to even comment on this site call themselves town fans. They should be banned.

UEFA81 has a habit of seeking a bit of sympathy. Wounded soldier.

And, dude. Very few people in the West have had 'very very hard lives' and if you have such deep and perspicacious views on things, i'm alarmed your perspective doesnt stretch beyond to realise this.

Makes me angry when people in this country complain about how hard something is. Its an insult to the billions of truly hard up folk.

Agree tho, the world is a sinister place. Just think we're pretty lucky, actually.

Firstly, what a great result today. My wife was scared as folk as i nearly crashed on A14 when winner went in! Secondly, i can hold back my opinion on Eufa1981 no longer! He clearly just wants an audience and just looks for 'bites' from people the whole time! Let's just make a stand and from now simply ignore the fool and hopefully he'll give up! Sorry to end negatively!

Hi , This is the first time I have commented on here so give me a chance. I have supported Ipswich since I was 7 and having started to use this site on a regular basis am getting a little fed up reading so much negativity. None of us have been happy or convinced by a lot of what has gone on this season but being a supporter does unfortunatley involve periods of transition and in some cases despair. However since the Newcastle game there has been a significant improvement in results and performances and what the team/management need more than anything is 100% backing. We all know the squad is better than our position suggests. Todays performance and result was massive and if we start to create the atmosphere we had at both Watford and Derby games things will only improve. So how about we all get behind the boys and SUPPORT them over the next few weeks. I know most do but it would be nice to listen and read less negativity

Well done to the lads today. After Lee-Barrett came on and we went 1-0, it's fair to say I wasn't overly confident of getting anything out of the game, so to get 3 points is great! A defeat today would have seen us 4 points away from safety, whereas now a win could take us to the dizzy heights of 17th, depending on other team's results. Let's hope that we can continue to progress, and get ourselves away from the dreaded relegation zone.

Great result from Keane and the lads today, deserved for the team and the faithful supporters - UEFA 81 your certainly a strange one, if I was you I'd expect to be visited by 3 ghosts on Christmas eve! Onwards and upwards can't wait for Bristol even with the 500 mile round trip... COYB!

Why does everyone not just ignore UEFA1981? He might then just drift off back to Carrow Road. Do you not all see that he loves it when you comment about his borng, negative posts?

Up the Town!!
