Celtic Defender Linked Monday, 18th Jan 2010 09:04
Town are being linked with a move for Celtic left-back Lee Naylor. The 29-year-old is out of favour at Parkhead and with his contract up in June is likely to be available for only a small fee.
Bloxwich-born Naylor started his career with Wolves for whom he made more than 300 appearances between 1997 and 2006, prior to joining the Bhoys for £600,000.
Despite having played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Falkirk, Naylor has generally been out of Tony Mowbray’s plans since he took over from Gordon Strachan at Celtic and the 5ft 10in tall former England U21 international is expected to be amongst a number of players leaving in January.
Greek club Kavala have also been linked, but Naylor is understood to prefer to remain in the UK.
Naylor wasn't involved in the recent Celtic-Rangers game watched by Blues boss Roy Keane.
Elsewhere, Birmingham City midfielder Damien Johnson is also claimed to be a Town target, although the Blues seem unlikely to look at signing another central midfielder in the transfer window. Northern Irishman Johnson, 31, is reportedly surplus to requirements at St Andrew's.
Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin are considering offering a deal to former Town loanee Moritz Volz. The full-back has been without a club since being released by Fulham in the summer, having recently failed to win himself a contract during a trial at Schalke 04.

pottyblue just because he has a left foot doesnt guarantee he is a better option look at Delaney playing there !! i agree with those in that i dont believe he is a better choice than Wright or Peters,he cannot even get in a struggling Celtic side leaking a lot of goals to the likes of Falkirk,Kilmarnock and Hamilton and i would take Moggas judgement on a defenders ability above Keanes at the moment .Again not negativity opinion.

think tudgay would be an awsome signing. shef wed are in dire straights money wise and wouldnt be able to turn a decent offer down. naylor would be an awsome signing too rosiener has done very well, but if he gets suspended or injured we would need cover. another left back would be needed aswell. dont think we need a striker tho we have the fire power just need to pull their fingers out!

One or two deluded fans on here talking about Chopra coming here - Why on earth would he leave a team in the top 6 to join us, regardless of Cardiff's financial position? Lets get real - Ex prem or lower leagues is the best we can hope for, & from the looks of things, Keano isn't too bothered anyway. If Pabs can finish like that more often & the goals keep coming from midfield, lets stick with what we have rather than waste the money. Summer is the time to buy a striker. With only one decent left-back at the club, who actually isn't naturally a left-back anyway, Naylor would be worth it for cover alone.

no doubt there is a lack of left sided players in the squad (left full and left mid), all of the left footers in the squad are happier in central roles, colback, garvan, delaney, etc my recollection of naylor a few years back were of a very good attacking full back who would add an awful lot to the team football wise, unfortunately for a player who at his age should now be at his peak, he is failing to make the celtic team, that can only be because he still has not learned the defensive side of the full backs game, which was very weak. Still might be a good option depending on the price. No chance of a striker coming in with the number of attacking players on the books. There are plenty of options there, even if none have blinding pace. Though the manager is doing most things right, I would question a little a possible over emphasis on form in training, there have always been players who are excellent on the training field, without a lot of the pressures of a competitive game (crowd, media, etc), and players who come alive in pressurised match situations, who may not shine always in training. Wickham - huge potential but may be overused at present. The midfield on sat is clearly the best combination, I would ask for more rotation among them when in possession as all are comfortable across the field. I would try Priskin with Counago or John next Sat, though you lose the aerial ability, captaincy and honesty of Walters. Might be worth a try in cup, with Stead/Walters partnership to return in league. Its time to find out if Priskin/Counago are really up for the battle, and that will be tested in cup game.

Why,lets have a team of left backs, may be it will confuse the opposition, then one of them may pop in and score.

Perhaps it is media drivel again but the frequency of such stories linking us with left backs could mean that there is something in this. On first glance, one would think it necessary to have a left footed player at left back. However, i seem to remember a certain Mick Mills, erstwhile captain of ITFC and England regular, who played 100s of games at left back but was right footed (hope I am right with this!) I would argue that we do have sufficient cover at left back with many players capable of doing an effective job in the short term to step in for David Wright who has done very well for us over the last three months. I also agree with Bluenight85 and others who have noted that we will have to sell before we buy as the squad is way too big at the moment. Whilst we are crying out for a striker (one with pace please), I am sure any signings in that area will only be on loan unless someone moves on and that will be more likely to happen in the summer. We must trust that Keane has a plan and that his vision is long term development which will see us increasingly competitive over the next 12-18 months.

A good attacking full back someone said and it brought back a memory of him scoring a long range effort at Portman Road. Checked the facts and I was proved right. See the proof below. Football League Championship - On 19-02-2003 KO 19:45 Ipswich 2 (2) - 4(1) Wolves Bent 2 Holland 45 Wolves Miller 11 Miller 63 Naylor 74 Ndah 81

Interesting, dont know anything about the chap really. Anyone got an honest knowledge of him as a player - pace? what's he like getting forward? Crosser of the ball? Fitness? Most interested in what he brings in terms of what we're missing...?

Sign him up, he's a decent player and looks as if it's not going to break the bank to get him. if the reports are true. definitely think e should wait till the summer to sign a striker, the midfeild are chipping in with goals now. if stead can maintain some form we'll be fine, now that stern has opened his account and counago looks to be forcing his way back into contention, from connor we expect great things wehich just leaves priskin the sole element of our strike force left wanting, very dissapointing considering his price tag but again, he didnt pick the money WE payed for him and i refuse to give up on him just yet. things looking good for town, lets make our big(ish) signings in the summer, when we can take the time to get it right by trimming our squad and adding that extra bit of quality to a balanced squad. in roy we trust onwards and upwards - COYB
