Pablo: I Knew What I Had to Do
Pablo: I Knew What I Had to Do
Monday, 18th Jan 2010 09:13

Striker Pablo Couñago says he knew precisely what he had to do when he got his late, late chance to win Saturday’s home game against Coventry. Couñago netted his second goal of the season, chipping the ball over Keiren Westwood and into the net to seal a dramatic 3-2 win for the Blues.

The Spaniard told the club site: "As soon as I controlled the ball, in my head I knew what I wanted to do. The keeper was very close to me and there was a lot of space to go for it so I tried it and I was very happy to see it go in.

"It was a special moment for me, of course, but it's more important for the team. It is always the team that counts.

"We know we need to win games and it may have been with the last kick but I think we deserved the three points."

Couñago admitted that Coventry’s equaliser had been a hammer blow: "We were very down when they scored their second goal but football can be unpredictable and sometimes fantastic things can happen.

"It looked like two points dropped but we had one minute left and luckily that was enough to get the winner.

Fellow frontman Stern John was pleased to get his first Town goal having failed to find the net since scoring for Bristol City at Portman Road in December 2008: “A striker is judged by the goals he scores.

“That's 32 games since my last goal, so it's a relief to score. I was not living up to my standards, because I've always been accustomed to scoring goals. But I wasn't that worried, because I'd been playing well the last couple of games.”

John’s second month on loan is up on January 30th.

OH MY GOD. I've held my tounge for a while but seriously boys and girls why are people whinging about Pablo? And saying that keane has been making poor selections isn't all true. Yes, shaky start to the season but could it just be that by dropping players i.e. stead and garvan it does get there hunger back because both said players have been excellent since they cam back into the side. That shows good man management. You learn a lot about team members when they get challenged - stand and fight or drift away (thatcher)

Seriously lets enjoy this win and move onto the next game. Who cares if we were crap at the begining, we are really starting to rock and roll now and fight. 10 points off the play-offs, game in hand. Boom baby we ARE going to make the play-offs I can feel it

Pablos technical ability is better than anybody elses at the club, but yeshe is prone to go missing in games if he doesn't get the service or his head drops if things don't quite go his way. Pabs on form is one of the best players we've had over the last ten years and I totally agree that he should be given a run in the team alongside Stead (or possible new signing-here's hoping) once he returns from his ban.

Hope RK now realises that Pablo should always be in the squad if not the starting line up ! Garvan as well - It's taken Keane time to realise what ITFC fans have known for ages .

Counago certainly seems to divide opinion amongst fans and I for one have stated that maybe he should be moved on. However, there have been some very perceptive comments regarding his ability and the necessity for the right kind of service if he is to make an effective contribution to the team. He is one of the best players in the Championship at holding the ball up with his backside sticking out - there is little doubt about that. At his best, he can act as a fulcrum around which the team can build their attacking moves. However, the consistency of performance and out and out EFFORT is what is sometimes lacking and this will certanly not sit well with the 100% commitment Keane will demand. Just because he is a flair player from a different football culture does not mean he can go missing (away from home in particular) and only maximum effort will be acceptable - also in training. In addition, he has a tendency to hang on to the ball for too long (frequently losing it) and it is well known (by refs too) that he can throw himself to the ground somewhat too easily. His goalscoring record is also only mediocre. Having said all of this, currently he should be making the bench at the very least and it is to hoped that the last month or so in the wilderness has seen him wake up to the requirements if he is to make a Roy Keane team on a regular basis. If it has, it will be a further example of positive man management from an increasingly effective manager.
Finally, what a great finish Pablo - thanks!

John and Walters is not the best option up front! Wickham and Pablo made a awesome difference when they came on as we stopped punting the ball and began playing it on the floor! If we play the ball to Pablos feet we can expect to see alot of through balls that a Stead or Priskin can run on to and finish. I would like to see counago and priskin together, when keane decides priskin is ready, as I think that would work well.
