Murphy Not Keen on Sunderland Return
Murphy Not Keen on Sunderland Return
Sunday, 14th Mar 2010 07:53

Loan striker Daryl Murphy says he likes it at Town and doesn’t want to return to Sunderland when his spell is up at the end of the season. The Irishman is enjoying working with Roy Keane at Portman Road.

Murphy says he wasn’t enjoying life at the Stadium of Light, where on the rare occasions he was involved he was used at left midfield: "I didn't feel part of it at all. So moving here to work with Roy again was a no-brainer.

"The fact is I'm a striker. Of course, I'll do a job on the left if I am asked but you'll get more out of me up front and the sooner managers realise that, the better.

"Roy has seen it. I've got five goals - but should have had 14 - since I came here. I like it at the club and don't really want to go back to Sunderland at the end of the season when I know that manager will bring in new players.

"Being out of the Sunderland side had a major affect on my confidence. It got to the stage where I didn't even enjoy training because I was asking, 'what am I training for?'"

Murphy is a big fan of Roy Keane, who he also played under during the Blues boss’s time with the Black Cats: "What I like about Roy is the fact he says straight out the way he wants things done.

"He never goes behind a player's back. I think more of a man who tells you what he thinks rather than someone who may not have you in his plans, but who never comes out and says as much.

"Roy doesn't care if he hurts your feelings with what he has to say. And why should he? We're well paid. We're grown men. He isn't doing it out of spite. He is doing it because he wants you to become a better player.

"As far as I am concerned, if the manager is not telling you off, then he is not doing his job."

The 26-year-old is contracted to the Black Cats until the summer of 2012.

I wonder if he likes it enough to take a drop in wages.

i agree with you Squaddie -
Sunderland don't really want him back, and he wants to stay here...........

it comes back to cold hard cash again. Sunderland should offer to settle his contract at 50% and we should offer him a 3 year deal with promise of renegotion on promotion.

job done!!

What a refreshing attitude! Blue_Fred your spot on, maybe the lure of a improved contract, or huge promotion bonus would persuade him to sign permantly.

Really pleased to see that things are looking up at last for the Tractor boys and that Murphy and perhaps Healey are coming good for you. Murphy's views are reciprocated we don't want him back as for playing him on the left that person that did that was ironically your current manager.

Murphy had enough chances in the Premiership and he is a good striker just not at the top level where his vision and reaction time is a little too slow. I am surprised that Healey has not made more of an impact.

Anyway good luck to you because my brother's team Norwich are beginning to squawk like chickens let alone Canaries. I really wanted Keane to do well but took the view that coming into our side was too big a first step so lets hope you are EACH TO THE OTHER WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED

"moving here to work with Roy again was a no-brainer" - why didn't he come in the summer when Roy tried to sign him up then? Clearly wasn't a no brainer and cash beat playing in and feeling part of a team.

I would like him to stay at the right price but no need to lie.

Bruce saying he is willing to talk about selling. Murphy wants to stay. Keane says money could be stumbling block. Looks like some protracted talks in the summer. I hope these don't drag on, so much that if we don't come to some agreement, we loose out on other chances.

I like Daryl's attitude as well as his talent as a Striker, it would be terrific if he signs for us permanently, obviously it will mean a drop in wages until we can get back into the Premiership, however, with players like him, with a good attitude towards our Manager, it should not be too long to wait, I have always had complete faith in Roy Keane and have said so many times on this site, I am sure that there will come a time when, with him in charge, we can all be proud to boast that we have one of the top Managers in the game, "trust me"

if he really wants to sign then he will, bruce and keane have a good relationship and i would be surprised if a deal cant be struck. murph seems to have really taken to the club, the thing to really watch out for is murph having his head turned by a bigger deal at a bigger championship club, then again, if thats the case, then he can do one. we want players that WANT to play for town.

Chopra, Murphy, Healey, Priskin, Wickham,

This would be the strikers i would have for next season if we could get Chopra and i still think Priskin will be a valued striker for us.

Just seen our goal from yesterday, was in north stand so could not realley see what happend, obviously Conner does great but also note the run/movement by Healy that opens the defence up.The best strikers work inpairs.

the glorious return of the "Keen" news title. Oh how I've missed it.

We should defo sign him, and hopefully Healy as well which would give us good options in attack. I do think we should sell Stead and replace him with someone else, possibly Chopra as others have suggested, or maybe a loany from the prem. I wonder how much Sunderland would want for Healy and Murphy and if we can afford that on top of their wages.

Worrying this although the stats don't lie and he may well be a goal poacher - he is a lazy baztard which can't be good for moral in the squad and can anyone seriously see him in a premiership team ?

Wickets - God bless yer, i have watched the goal many times and can't believe that Healy's run has not been mentioned more. It was no coincedence that when Healy entered the fray yesterday, the scunny defence started to struggle to clear thier lines as easily has they had all afternoon simply because his movement off the ball was pulling the scunny central defence all over the place and induviduals into areas they did not want to be.

even on a 'free' transfer is he really worth 20k a week on a 3 year contract??????????

He turned us down on a number of occasions....the reason...cash. I'm glad he's scoring and I hope he continues to do so, but lets not forget the history guys, if he takes a cut in salary to stay then he'll have gained my respect...we'll see???

When this guy didn't sign in the summer I was not so happy to see him come in January, thought his motives were wrong. But what would have happened if he had come in the summer? He's right too, he should have had more goals but then so should all of our strikers.
