Keane: It'll Take Time
Keane: It'll Take Time
Friday, 19th Mar 2010 16:18

Boss Roy Keane says it’ll take him a bit longer to put together the "core" of the squad he wants at Town. The Blues boss again looks likely to make significant moves into the transfer market in the summer.

Keane said: “I’ve been here seven or eight months but sometimes I have to understand that it probably takes a bit longer to get the core of players I want at the football club. But as we all know, unfortunately you don’t get that time.

“I’ve signed a two-year contract, but I’ve said before it probably takes three or four years to get the club running that way you want it to be.

“But unfortunately you don’t always get that, however, you have to understand that, that’s the name of the game. You’ve got to be quick, learn from your mistakes, learn about the players you bring into your football club, not just as players but their characters, what kind of people they are.”

Yesterday, Keane said he could make one immediate move into the transfer market with a loan addition to his squad a possibility, while Brentford have made an enquiry regarding a loan deal for Pim Balkestein ahead of a permanent deal in the summer.

'Seven or eight months' - his maths is no better than his management!

The trouble is many of the current 'core' are loanees so we've made limited progress this year. This statement is obviously a season ticket sales rally-call. Well lets understand what league we're in first off. Who pays fgood money for an unknown product ?

The problem is that I can only see Delaney and Leadbitter as improvements to what we had before, with Brown, C.Healy, Martin, Priskin and Edwards all failing to make an impact (excluding the loans, who have been mixed). Big money has been spent and we are lower now in the league than when we started. Does the "three or four years" that Keane talks about mean three of four years of £8m-a-year from Marcus Evans to spend on new players? If not, we would need to wheel and deal and the evidence of that so far had been woeful (two of Keane's own signings have gone out again on loan).

J45 - might not be the worst thing to happen to us as a club to move forward

were not going to get relegated!!! we are merely limping our way over the finish line rather then finishing strong!!!

we are not a club that changes managers willy nilly like that silly lot at qpr. a dire season so far but keane will and should be given more time.

coyb!

Northernblues, I remember his also saying he would get us promoted in a season and it doesnt take a good manager to finish mid table.

The core of the squad isnt the issue Keane, you are.

moan moan moan moan moan - tht's all some do. Has it dawned on you that RK may have inherited major issues from the previous manager. Nope - I doubt it, as many of you just sit at home hoping that Roy fails. Good on you - that shows great support for the club.

I agree we need stability, but that is my concern with Keane. Looking at the last match, the back four had kept two clean sheets so why change it? Why drop D.Wright out of the squad?

Keane inherited a top-half championship side that needed a few key additions (left-back, centre-back, left-winger, striker) in my view. Instead we got overhaul with lots of loan signings and the team changes every week. It looks like he is planning many more changes in the summer and for me that is not stability.

how about talking about possible signings for next year.
Chopra? is there any other clubs that are broke that we can take advantage of for better quality players? is joe ledley still at cardiff?... Ambrose?

any player with a hunger to achive something in their career will play for keane.
and after speaking to west ham supporters be careful what you wish for with ref. to curbs he done well at charlton but he was given quite a few years, but nearly destroyed all team spirit at west ham and they would have gone down if he stayed playing boring football.

Mark - "Keane inherited a top-half championship side that needed a few key additions"

I've seen this ridiculous argument pop up constantly on the site:

Mid-championship team + 2 or 3 players (including "20-goal-a-season striker") = Promotion

For the majority of the squad that RK inherited from JM, the best they'll ever be is mid-championship players; a mix of players that either simply didn't have the ability, or don't have the hunger or ambition to do what it takes to become Premiership players. Quite happy to collect massive pay packets (I'm guessing most of us have to work for a year to earn what they do in a month...), play well in the easy games and not roll their sleeves up in the ugly ones, and coast along in mid-table safety.

A change of manager and adding 2 or 3 players to the squad isn't going to suddenly put fire in the bellies of players that have got themselves in a comfortable rut; for us to get promoted, we'll need 5 or 6 players who are already good enough for the Premiership, and another 10 or so that are up for the challenge. How many of our current squad can look at themselves and say that they fall into either of those categories?

For all the players that RK has added to the squad, B. Murphy, Delaney and Leadbitter are working out fine, hopefully D. Murphy will repay RK's faith by signing in the summer, and although Priskin & Martin haven't been instant successes, as they're 22 / 23 years old I wouldn't write them off just yet...

Here's a few facts for some of you doubters. Alex Ferguson (love him or hate him) joined Man Utd in Nov 86 & didn't win a trophy until the FA Cup in 89/90 season with the supporters calling for him to be sacked.

My point is that rebuilding takes time & even Ferguson took 3 years, & spent a heck of a lot more money than Marcus Evans. Given time & a bit more faith Keane will get it right.

I think this is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy and the days of the 'Keane revolution' are nearing an end. This has been a dismal season and is showing precious little sign of genuine progress. IT can be argued that we have gone backwards. RK has shown he wont walk from difficult times and ME has shown he will back his manager. Good stuff, but it's probably time to move on. RK would need to go on a tremendous run between now and the end of the season to convince ME (and many others) that the current set up is the way forward, and there is no sign to suggest that they are capable of this.

A nightmare scenario ! Keane is talking about three or four years to get what he wants !! He will always be the hot- headed , unreliable man regardless of wheteher it is 3 weeks, 3 months or 3 years .

Err to compare Fergie and Utd to Keane and Ipswich ?

I think Utd and Fergie may just have been able to 'attract' afew more players - oh and they had a 'pretty good' youth team I seem to remember - Beckham , Scholes , Butt , Neville , Giggs...

I just hope Keane gets it right and shuts up the Keane out brigade. Ok this season has been poor and well below expectations, considering many pundits were tipping us for promotion. Managers need to be given time and Keane is trying to build a squad that will not only get promotion but a core of players who will give the club a chance of Premiership survival. I very much doubt the squad we had last year would have stayed up and probably not with the current crop of players, there is work to be done. Burley didn't get us promoted overnight, took him five years and yes there were near misses along the way but the board could have sacked him after two or three years of missing out, they didn't and we went up albeit not for long. I admired the instant job Royle did narrowly missing out on play offs first season, then two successive play off finishes with a much lesser team than we have now. But what would have happened if we'd gone up with that group of players and no money, straight back down I'd imagine with the same group of people calling for Joes head. Keane has a long term plan, it's a bigger picture than the here and now. Ferguson and Robson weren't overnight success stories, they were given time and look what they did (and still doing in Fergusons case) for their respective clubs.
