No International Retirement for Edwards
No International Retirement for Edwards
Thursday, 13th May 2010 08:58

Midfielder Carlos Edwards says he will continue to play for Trinidad and Tobago if he is called into squads in the future. Edwards has previously won 78 caps, scoring four goals.

Despite asking to be left out of international matches once Trinidad and Tobago’s World Cup qualifying campaign was over, the 31-year-old says he will continue to answer the call if coach and one-time Town trialist Russell Latapy still wants him: “I’ve never turned my back on T&T and I’ll be there until the management staff thinks I’m not fit to play.

“It was an honour to wear the captain’s armband for the last two games and it will continue to be an honour if I can lead the team. I will definitely have a word with Russell to hear about his plans and to see how I can fit in.”

Edwards admits that his 2009/10 campaign was very much below par, having joined the Blues from Sunderland in August: “This season wasn’t up to the standard I was capable of and the coach and fans knew this. I have next season to look forward to and I won’t be too despondent. I intend to bounce back and lift my game.

“I didn’t play as many games as I would like, with a couple knocks and nature took its toll with the chicken pox. But I’m fine now, hoping to enjoy a couple days at home and get back for pre-season.”

Meanwhile, Derby County have released former Town keeper Lewis Price, who spent this season on loan at Brentford, and ex-Blues striker Darryl Knights has been told his contract at Kidderminster Harriers will not be renewed.

Can someone explain to me why we bought Carlos Edwards? Keane clearly rates Jon Walters highly and Walters plays right-midfield, plus we have Peters who can play there and Norris at a push. Why then spend around £1.3M + high wages on a right-midfielder when we desparately needed a striker?

Aside from the above, pretending right-midfield was a priority, Edwards should have been a low-risk signing as Keane knows him personally and has managed him before. With the emphasis on bringing in workers, characters and "men", it makes the signing of this laid-back non-performer even more puzzling.

Another uninspiring Keane signing from his unimaginative and somewhat limited transfer network and policy - which does not inspire any sort of confidence as to what he may do over the summers wheelings and dealings.
