Leicester Striker Linked With Town
Leicester Striker Linked With Town
Thursday, 1st Jul 2010 17:38

Town are reported to be chasing Leicester striker DJ Campbell. The 28-year-old spent the end of last season on loan at Blackpool, who are keen to sign the 5ft 10in tall frontman on a permanent basis in time for their inaugural Premier League campaign.

Campbell, who scored a hat-trick for the Tangerines in their play-off semi-final at Nottingham Forest, started his career in non-league, playing for Chesham, Stevenage, Billericay (loan) and Yeading before being given his introduction into the Football League by Brentford in 2005/06.

From there, the Londoner won himself a £500,000 move to Birmingham during their 2005/06 Premier League campaign.

In July 2007, Campbell moved on to Leicester for £1.6 million, subsequently joining Blackpool, Derby and then Blackpool again on loan.

After winning promotion to the Premier League at Wembley, the striker, who netted 14 times last season, said he was keen to sign for Blackpool full-time, but talks between the Seasiders and Foxes have broken down with the Midlanders wanting a £1.5 million for his services, more than the Lancastrians are willing to pay.

An England National Game XI (non-league England) player earlier in his career, Campbell has a year left on his Leicester contract.

In April Campbell was arrested in connection with a stabbing outside a London nightclub and released on bail pending further enquiries.

A new striker is very much on Roy Keane’s wish-list ahead of the new season with Cardiff’s Michael Chopra understood to be his first choice.

Why do i get the feeling that the coming season will be no better than the last??
Im starting to think that players dont want to come and play for Keane. I mean i thought Keane being Keane could attract all sorts of quality players but to be fair he has done nothing.
He will just keep money into it until he gets it right but i think ME is a lot wiser than the Sunderland board.
Why cant we see the headlines like.. Chopra signs?
It's garbage. Cambell is average, very average. Just like our manager at the moment!

Campbell is certainly no better than Stead ,if true it would seem another panic the season is starting soon signing .
I cannot believe after last season and Keanes early call for new players for this year his main targets were an Irish journeyman and an ex sunderland player who failed in the premiership ,to me it again shows how limited Keanes scouting is ,he needs help from a good number two soon or this season could end up worse than last year

Holloway's brand of football - exciting. Keane's brand of football - dull. Holloway's strikers - lots of chances to score. Keane's strikers - some chances, but more scared of missing rather than WANTING to score for a man they respect.

Bring back Graham Harbey!

No, no, no & a very big no! As others have said-he is just going to be another Lisbie. Come on Keano-learn from Sir Bobby, the only way we are ever going to compete in the future is to build a young hungry team and reject any offers from the bigger clubs when they come in, its the only way we will ever get anywhere.

Look to the lower leagues-Walters prime example. As many have said Simeon Jackson would be a far better punt, come on Keane-I have renewed my season ticket and need something to look forwards to and being linked with players of this calabre is sould destroying! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Charlie Austin would be cheaper and at 21 and with his goals record he would be an excellent signing. I also think it would be realistic to think that we could actually sign him as well. Simeon Jackson would also be a good signing as well. Picking up successful young players from the level below works out well so often, they have enthusiasm and energy and are still looking to better their career. Look at nicky Maynard last season but we were too tight to take the punt.

DJ Campbell is an ok player but he will never be class, why potentially waste 1.5 million? I really hope this story isnt true!

why cant we just close the club and sell the land off.. give every town supporter 2000 quid and move on .. you can get a lot of speedway or darts for 2 grand and this roy business is just bringing every one down..i sometimes wonder if its healthy to support the same club as the people who post on here..
