Leicester Striker Linked With Town
Leicester Striker Linked With Town
Thursday, 1st Jul 2010 17:38

Town are reported to be chasing Leicester striker DJ Campbell. The 28-year-old spent the end of last season on loan at Blackpool, who are keen to sign the 5ft 10in tall frontman on a permanent basis in time for their inaugural Premier League campaign.

Campbell, who scored a hat-trick for the Tangerines in their play-off semi-final at Nottingham Forest, started his career in non-league, playing for Chesham, Stevenage, Billericay (loan) and Yeading before being given his introduction into the Football League by Brentford in 2005/06.

From there, the Londoner won himself a £500,000 move to Birmingham during their 2005/06 Premier League campaign.

In July 2007, Campbell moved on to Leicester for £1.6 million, subsequently joining Blackpool, Derby and then Blackpool again on loan.

After winning promotion to the Premier League at Wembley, the striker, who netted 14 times last season, said he was keen to sign for Blackpool full-time, but talks between the Seasiders and Foxes have broken down with the Midlanders wanting a £1.5 million for his services, more than the Lancastrians are willing to pay.

An England National Game XI (non-league England) player earlier in his career, Campbell has a year left on his Leicester contract.

In April Campbell was arrested in connection with a stabbing outside a London nightclub and released on bail pending further enquiries.

A new striker is very much on Roy Keane’s wish-list ahead of the new season with Cardiff’s Michael Chopra understood to be his first choice.

Noticed somone mentioned Callum Davenport.
to be fair to the guy he's been cleared of any wrong doing, alothough he no doubt didn't help the situation there.
Without a club, no fees to pay etc etc, not the other end of country to his family, with his prem expirence. he may be worth a look/trial/medical(!!!). (although he did spend time at norwich :o( )

Theres a player called Simeon Jackson who play's for Gillingham scored 15 goals last season only 22, has pace, I hear the scum are after him. This is the guy who we should go for, could get him for half the price, Campbell hasn't done it enough, and at 28 is he likely to get any better? If thats good why do Leicester want to let him go?

A reasonable cv, capable at Championship level and some prem experience and had a good season last year. Decent pace and goal return. Once again, £1.5m is a fair bit for a player Leicester clearly don't want and has just a year left on his contract. It would be like us asking for £1.8m for Martin! For that sort of fee I would be tempted to look elsewhere (we could probably get Simeon Jackson for half that?Less maybe?). The court case doesn't exactly drive up the asking price either. Perhaps offer Alex Bruce (or one of the other listed players) in exchange?

Steady on everyone,Wickham is far too young for everyone thinking he will play as a regular next season and lash in 30 goals. He doesnt need the pressure and expectation that everyone is putting on him and this could hinder rather than help.As for DJ we are letting better go in Stead and Pablo.

...theres only 1 marcus stewart... we did it then, found a rough diamond who became a legend, lets do it again and take a risk from a lower league hotshot

D J Campbell?..not Nicky Campbell is it?....is Trevor Benjamin still playing?..maybe we could give him a go too.

Seriously..we've got strikers here all capable of knocking in around 15 goals in the championship (Stead,Priskin,Counago,Walters)..the problem is that we've got someone in charge who doesn't know how to get the best out of them OR how to get along with people full stop, which is why he'll continually have to bring in batch after batch because he falls out with so many of them.

The problems at ITFC won't go away until the cause does.

Oh its difficult bring in X, Y and Z...

Other teams manage it, others teams have assistant managers and players in place prior to pre-season, we very rarely do.

I think this woiuld be a good appointment actually. He's known and liked by fans and has experience, and did v.well at Colchester, taking all things into account.

DJ Campbell... not too sure - he's decent, available and would probably come to us. But should we get DJ & Chopra - we will have to get rid of folks if other teams want them.

Is he actually any better than Stead or Pab or Priskin? Unless its a step change in the right direction then why bother.

I can't believe people are getting so emotional about a media rumour with no substance.

Will people please read the whole story before posting, 4 of you have said why would he come here if he can play prem football with blackpool. The story says that although blackpool want him they aren't prepared to pay the asking price, so it doesn't matter if he would rather play in the prem, no one in the prem wants him.

He fired Blackpool into the Premiership and their way of thanking him is saying 1.5 m is too much.

Exactly! Why are we considering paying that?

It's desparation time at PR again. It's going to be a miserable season with those Budgies flying high and us languishing in the basement.
