Sunderland Keeper Move Near to Collapse? Wednesday, 28th Jul 2010 11:25
Town’s move for Sunderland keeper Márton Fülöp is close to collapse, according to reports on Wearside. The clubs have agreed a fee understood to be in the region of £1 million, but the Hungarian international has so far failed to agree personal terms with the Blues.
Town are reported to have initially wanted a loan deal before agreeing to a permanent move for the ex-Spurs keeper. The player is said to have held personal talks but has been unable to agree a contract at Portman Road.
Sunderland are believed to have told Town to get the deal done quickly as there are other clubs interested in signing the 27-year-old.
Newly-promoted La Liga club Hercules are also understood to be chasing Fülöp, along with two unnamed Premier League sides, Anderlecht and Olympiakos. Fülöp, who played for Roy Keane at Sunderland, is likely to prefer a move to the Blues as he would have a greater chance of playing regular first team football for a Championship side.

I think Keane will walk soon if he keeps getting players to come down that he wants to sign and SC/ME won't give them the deals they want. I don't think anyone should lose any sleep if Fulop does not sign though. If money is tight then it could and should be used to strengthen the squad elsewhere. I think the two keepers we have showed last season that they are good enough for the championship and you can always get emergency loans for keepers if we have an injury crisis.

Not a RK fan but can't really blame him for contract not being agreed. Not very convinced about Clegg yet, is he any good at negotiating these contracts or is it one of ME blokes doing it? If we had kept hold of Richard Wright we wouldn't have needed to spend a £1 million and his contract wages are unlikely to have been higher than what Fullop requires? That I can blame RK for. Agree with alot of these posts, about time ITFC got a bit of luck. With all these Irish players you would think we would have some by now!!!

"the Hungarian international has so far failed to agree personal terms with the Blues" Personal terms could be guarantees over first team action or a get-out clause if he's not being played, not necessarily just how much he's going to be paid. The reports I've read all say he wants to leave Sunderland to get first team action. If he was just interested in the money, he'd be happy to warm the bench at the Stadium of Light.

Good points Fatboy. Can't see RK agreeing to guarantee somebody first team appearances however good they initially appear to be. He may be looking at what has happened to his buddy Priskin and thinking I don't want to sitting on another bench or loaned out so you may be right?

Could be a good signing for us,as Murphy was playing at a low level in Ireland and has only palyed a handful of Championship games. Dont get me wrong I think Murphy is a good keeper. Fulop has had Premier experiance and if Man City thought he had something about him he cant be that bad. If Keane is building for the futrue this will be a bargin when we get in the Prem. Fulop as number 1 and Murphy as number two. Keepers sorted now just the rest of the team. :0)

You don´t have to waste £1 million on a keeper, especially when you only use him as cover. Over here in Germany there are quite a few good goalies out of contract at the moment and I guess that is also the case in England. Keep that money and spend it on a decent striker.

There is obviously something serious wrong with how the club is operating at present. We seem to lack any sort of knowledge at buying or selling players. Simon Clegg has never been at a football club before and has been in charge of buying and selling players. He was given the task of getting rid of as many players as possible (from those 8 made available) by the start of pre season. He came out saying he was confident he can do this. He hasnt even managed one and we are a week and a half away from the start of the season. Whats going on?! Maybe its him that needs to be sacked! Come on Town Prioritise -Keane was going on about how we needed to improve from last season, by scoring goals. Signing a quality striker he was saying. Surely you would prioritise by signing a striker or two first before anything else? Great so what do we do? Try and sign a keeper and waste time swapping the defenders around! Some one please help me with this! whats going on?!

I'm against this move and I'm glad it's fallen through. Still shows up what a mug Keane is, and how atrocious even his medium-term planning is. We're now apparently stuck with a goalkeeper he apparently thinks isn't good enough (having signed him for cash money in the first place), having let go the 2009 POTY without even offering him a contract. Genius.

Why the hell do we need fulop! murphy and lee-barrett are both capable goal keepers. Im sure we can all agree we lacked goals at portman road last year from our strike force so Keano look to buy for the other end of the field! remember goals win matches!!!!

This is funny. What the hell is Fülöp expecting from a Championship club? To match his Premiership wages? No way!!! I see him as a good addition but for me the money is too much having in mind that we don't need a keeper that badly as a striker for example. If this fail I won't be unhappy.

can he play up front, if not we don't need him

i think someone found out he was'nt a 20 goal plus scorer ! . a bunch of headless chooks comes to mind to describe the management activities at the club at the moment surely we can do better than this ?

I don't think we need a keeper so I'm not exactly gutted.... But the real point I want to make here is that all the trouble we're having clearly isn't Keane's fault. We've had Derry, Chopra, Fulop and probably a few others I've forgotten or don't know about, that Keane has pointed out and did his part, only for the combination of Clegg and Evans to mess it up. Clegg out?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO This day is getting worse. Can't get anyone in can't get anyone to leave. All this time I respected Evan's choice to stay hidden but with this ticket scandel and lack of trasfers I'm begining to think he was little money or is a fraud. I know Keane hasn't been the best with money but why can Evan's pay him off. There is no point of blamming Keane as not many people are good with no money. Keane is not a wheeler dealer, Evan knew this when he appointed Keane. One last thing. When Birningham got brought. The owners said they wanted to buy Ipswich but because we had been recently taken over by Evans. They brought West ham instead. I maybe I'm just angry and looking for someone to blame but if this keeps one I've wasted my money on renewing my season ticket again and going to see a repeat of last year. Which is no joke. I renewed as I had hope but the new season is less than 3 weeks away.

onlybluesandhorses - great name by the way. I think you have hit the nail on the head. We probabaly were better with now money. That way we wouldn't have been able to afford Keane and we could have brought someone who knows a bargin.

A bit better than our current keepers, but if he's looking for a big wage then we're better off without him...

I've got to concede and agree with some of the comments above, we may have been better before Keano came to the club. However, a backward step is sometimes what it take to make a Giant Leap forward! The squad currently lacks shape and more importantly a great deal of belief. Priskin should be banging them in at this level and Martin running a merry dance around the right backs of the Championship. Norris is capable of shutting down the midfield supported a Luca, Leadbitter, Walters and others, but it just will not click for Keane. Not yet anyway. Cleggy is my biggest worry in all this. He's why: like the Girl you've always fancied - it's better to woo and impress. It's not often that 'Fancy a sh*g? I'm available and a cheap skate' works - players expected to be courted to a degree and it seems Cleggy and Co will not play ball! Not sure I disagree with the 'take it or leave it' attitude, but it doesn't seem to be working at the moment, does it?

This has to be the worst pre season build up ever its a shambles. As things stand im really not sure if things will work out for keane. We are no closer to signing a striker, got a few injury problems, and are club is being run by a f'n clown in the name of S CLEGG. We have gone backwards in 15 months. Im struggling to find the positives for next weekends first game and season.S clegg out!!!!
