Martin Joins Charlton On Loan
Martin Joins Charlton On Loan
Friday, 6th Aug 2010 20:04

Midfielder Lee Martin has joined League One Charlton Athletic on loan for the season. The Addicks were first linked with a move for the 23-year-old a fortnight ago.

Charlton boss Phil Parkinson says he's delighted to make the signing: "We're really pleased to get Lee in on a year's loan.

"He's a tremendous young player and great acquisition for our squad, He can also play up front or in either wide position.

"What's more, all his family are in Bromley, so he's a local boy.

"It's been another long, protracted deal, but as I've been saying all along, [chairman] Richard [Murray] and I would rather wait for the players we want to fit into the squad and the overall jigsaw we're trying to piece together, and Lee certainly falls into that category.”

Martin moved to Portman Road from Manchester United for a fee reported to be anywhere from £1.6 million to £2 million last summer, signing a four-year deal but has failed to live up to his billing.

Town are likely to be paying a large proportion of the former Wimbledon trainee’s £13,000-a-week wages while the winger is with the south London club.

Martin has been given the number 10 shirt at the Valley and is set to make his debut in a home game against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Was a dreadful over priced signing ,there was a reason Sir Alex only played him once in the carling cup in 4 seasons .has now probably found his level .
Though it is another spark or creative player we are losing with no replacements looking likely ,its going to be a long season i fear

Pity we cpould not sell hi,m he will never be any good in any division as far as I'm concerned. A dreadful purchase and terrible waste of money. Keane fell for the Man U connection when he looked good amongst talented players. Good luck to him hope he proves me wrong but I doubt it.

exellent, Priskin to Swansea would complete the recovery.

Hmmm, ok but what is the situation with the midfield now that we've lost garvan and martin, may soon be losing walters and as of yet have gained no one?

Seems a bit rash when nobody's yet to come in and transfers nowadays fall through so frequently. Looks now like Hyam a definite starter but if one of the midfield gets injured I fear we'll be looking at a gaping hole.

Still I suppose Roy wouldn't have done this if he wasn't sure that he could bring in a couple more players and could bode well for the future - just not the order in which I would have carried out things

Idont share the negativity.

RK has made some mistakes like all football managers. Some say players don't want to come to Ipswich because of RK. Some say he is a bully. Well its time that we got rid of all our highly paid underperformers and that seems to be happening and needs a brave and strong manager to achieve this. The squad needed a complete overhaul. In retrospect if this means Kean has to even look at some of his own signings and make those decisions fine by me. I think ME is installing good financial disciplines which RK is now having to learn to live with. Most premiership managers squander money and often take gambles in signings. So perhaps a learning curve for RK as well. So the good news is that our youth scheme has to play a bigger role. This sounds more like old Ipswich to me. The senior professionals have to be of the right Character to support the youngsters not just interested in their own paycheck. We now have good cover in the goalkeeping dept.
McAuley and Delaney were a real success last year and Tommy Smith is emerging as a good player. Norris and Leadbitter are good professionals and will not go missing in games, 100 per cent guaranteed. We have one of the hottest young properties in the Country in Wickham. The rebuilding continues and the backbone of a good team is emerging.

For me last year RK turned us into a side that become difficult to beat. Our form for the second half of the year was top six. And we supposedly were one of the teams who created the most goalscoring chances (not quite sure who judges these and collates the info though). If we had converted those chances where would have ended up and would people still think we had turned into an unattractive side. Even Tony Mowbray had to concede that he had to sacrifice some of his footballing principles to get WBA promoted a few seasons ago. They often played teams off of the park footballing wise and also often ended up loosing to sucker punches.

Freeing up wages will also give us some opportunity to exploit the loan market.

Perhaps we are not a top six side as yet. But I am prepared to give RK more time. I have followed this club for 45 years. I have to confess as a youth I stood on the terraces shouting "Robson out" after it looked like he was destroying our team having had a punch up with captain Billy Baxter and marginalising other players like Tommy Carrol and we were looking dead certs for a relegation. How embarrassed do I feel now having gone on to witness some of the finest football I have ever seen at Portman Road. Am I an RK fan, well let me say this - I don't think Brian Clough or Alex Ferguson would have been or are the easiest people to work with. I think RK would have learned a lot from these to great managers. Perhaps his achievement at Sunderland had some elements of good fortune and we are judging him on very high expectations. Burley took 6 years to get us back into the premiership. I do think it takes time to build a team and am prepared to accept that we might not even make top six again. I guess Marcus Evans will be the judge of progress at the end of the day.

at least roy is capable of admitting he was wrong, this forum would have a nicer more 'family' feel to it if some of the posters on here had the same grace.

Thinking about it, while this isn't a great move from the Club's current perspective, this does give Lee Martin an opportunity to rebuild his career. A good season at that level will do his confidence a power of good and should also rebuild part of his transfer value. He could then either return and play a part for town or the club could recover part of their outlay if he moves on. Good luck Lee. Enjoy yourself and come back a better player for the experience!
