Keane: Fans Fine at Watford
Keane: Fans Fine at Watford
Saturday, 23rd Oct 2010 08:16

Town manager Roy Keane says the Blues support were fine towards him at Watford on Tuesday, despite his critical comments earlier in the week. The Blues boss was disappointed that his side were unable to give them something to cheer about at Vicarage Road.

Keane said: “The fans have been fine. My point was about getting behind the younger players, but the fans were fine the other night. They were right behind us and it would have been nice if we’d have got the equaliser.

“We’ve looked at the goal which was disallowed and we’re still struggling to find where the offside was on that.

“When you lose a game of football, you always feel disappointed for supporters who pay decent money and travel away. Hopefully they’ll travel to Forest and we’ll give them a better result.”

The Irishman says that the point he was trying to make was that the club’s youngsters need more support: “I can understand the moaning and groaning, I have no problem with that, but sometimes just encourage the younger players just that little bit more because we have inexperienced players in important parts of the pitch.

“I hope they’re not too upset, I hope they’re fine and I hope they will agree with me in terms of getting behind the younger players.

“The senior boys will be fine because they’ve played 300, 400 or 500 games but the younger players who might not have played 10 games yet sometimes need that little bit more encouragement, particularly after they’ve made a mistake. That was all I was asking and I’m sure fans will understand that.”

Keane feels what he says isn't always portrayed as he intended: “The point was to be constructive but it won’t necessarily come across that way because usually the word that follows my name when I say something like that is ‘blasts’. You’ve got lazy journalists around the place and that’s the word they seem to use.

“If people think I was blasting anybody, I wasn’t. It was just a case of getting behind the younger players.”

I agree with what Keane said about the fans as it infuriates me when for example people at last weeks Coventry game who had barely managed to muster enough encouragement to clap their hands together as the team came out of the tunnel were then blasting disapproving comments within 3 minutes of the game kicking off.

When it comes to positive vocal encouragement from fans Portman Road is about as far from a fortress as it's possible to be and I long for the day when the both the negative and the soporific sections of fans will actually get on their feet and start chanting encouragement for the team right from the whistle.

Regarding Keane's point about the spin put on his comments I think that he is spot on. What were calm and measured comments which gave a perfectly fair and reasonable reflection on the need to be positive and get behind the young & inexperienced player with support was taken and twisted in to the same old boring & negative headlines by the media who are only interested in their own selfish agenda with no interest in supporting ITFC whatsoever. Chief among the appalling press coverage are the Evening Star & EDT who going by the negative spin put on almost every single story can only be written by Norwich fans.

Get behind the team with positive vocal support and COYB at the City Ground today!

Im with you Hermann. I cannot stand the commments the local press make- you read them and then hear the Press Conference that Roy has given and can see how much they twist things.

I sometimes despair of the comments fans make- FFS Town do NOT have a right to win all their games, they are not Barcelona. They are a "good" team but for heavens sake, respect the opposition as well.

We watched the Bristol City match last night and they looked set to get 3 points of QPR- yet when we played them we won easily and playing QPR we were outclassed. All teams have peaks and troughs of form. Accept it and get behind the team!!!

Off to Forest now.

Hermann, don't you get it? Forums are where people express opinions, likewise newspapers. There are there to express opinions and ideas that may or maynot coincide with your mindset.

I admire you supporting the Town so avidily, but it seems obvious that Town are not performing well and fans, just as legit as yourself, are increasingly becoming impatient with Keane and his limitations as a manger at this level.

Surely you don't feel your comments are more valid than those who see things differently (or maybe more realistically).

The away support has been brilliant for many years. In fact im sure most town fans prefer going to away games especially for the atomesphere and passion. We haven't been vocal enough at home for years only when the big games come round ie Naarwich. If we are in the top six come april im sure the atomesphere will be really good. Lets do the double on narrwich this year im sure the noise would return.

I agree with the comment relating to preferring away games. Last season, partly due to work, I ended up going to as many away games as home ones. I enjoyed the away matches far more. The general atmosphere is just more positive, louder and all inspite of how the team performs.

Seems as soon as some people take their seats at Portman Road for a home match, they instantly expect more. It is a shame that the atmosphere has almost completely disappeared from PR, as it used to be a difficult place to visit.

Anyone got a drum or knows a whole brass band? Least that way someone will be making some noise!

well ive never heard any fans slagging off any young players where i stand (lower north) he must only be refering to the mural behind the dug outs. theres only 1 area that generates any atmosphere at portman rd and thats the lower north, always have been! As for keanes rants i think most are side swipes at evans, but he does contradict himself a lot, when he first arrived i remember him saying the most important thing at a football club were the supporters.Falling out with most of them is not a good move and will not get more people to part with a lot of money to watch the town.

when you watch a game and they are passing like blind men do you stay quiet or do what comes naturally[to most] sigh, groan , yes rant if need be, or should we all cheer , perhaps start ole' ...ole' at each stray pass, bloody hell ,i dont hear younger players getting that much flac ,ok a few were moaning about CW at Coventry match, but only amongst themselves nothing that would carry to pitch. If Keane and team want to be cheered for 90mins they should start playing for 90 minutes . Having been to last two games i cant afford to go today, no doubt i'll be condemned for that by some .Like ive said before players get paid to play we pay to watch them.

Just a shame you didn't learn anything from the game and we're 2-0 down yet again with 1 up front a no left back. KEANE YOU USELESS PRAT

I agree at home the atmosphere needs to be better, but the passing football seems to have dissappeared, under Keane our style of football has become boring, its like watching a Sam Allardyce team. Bring in someone who get us playing football and can buy decent players, Sean O'driscoll is the man!

mr keane seems to be a very rude man.i think we live in a free country and have the right to state our opinion after paying the outrageous ticket prices to watch our team.if he was keeping up his end of the bargain he would not have fans on his back.
