Norris: We Let Down the Fans and the Staff
Norris: We Let Down the Fans and the Staff
Monday, 29th Nov 2010 11:14

Skipper David Norris felt the players let down the fans and Roy Keane and his management staff during Sunday’s 4-1 derby defeat at Norwich. The 29-year-old hopes they can go some way towards making amends when the Blues take on West Brom at Portman Road in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup on Wednesday.

Norris said: “It was hard to even go over to the fans at the end of the game. They stood out yesterday and when a few of us went over to their section they clapped us. It was almost embarrassing to take it.

“We have got to start giving them something back starting with Wednesday’s Carling Cup quarter-final against West Brom.

“To the players it was probably just another game — another three points. But to the staff their jobs are on the line.

“And to our fans there was local pride at stake, and the derby really means a lot to them. We let them all down. It was an embarrassing defeat with no positives and us players have got to look at ourselves."

Norris, who is in talks regarding extending his time at Portman Road beyond the end of the season, says Keane and his coaches do everything to ensure positive results: “The manager and staff prepare us right on the training ground. They can change this and change that but once we cross the white line it is down to us.

“The manager is coming under increasing pressure, as we all do when you are losing games. We are playing for new contracts, and it is part and parcel of football, but we have to give ourselves a chance.”

The former Plymouth man says the derby was a chance to turn things around after the three previous defeats: “This was no ordinary game and after losing three on the trot this was a match that could have put right the wrongs of the three previous games.

“As mistakes go the first two Norwich goals were shockers. We are not picking on individuals and they were from players you can normally rely on, but they had no place in a game like yesterday’s.”

Correct David - we can all moan about Roy until the cows come home, but the bottom line is the players were complete rubbish. What was O'Dea doing for the first? What was Delaney doing to allow Holt to get round him for the sending off? Abysmal. I do wonder if the players actally care about the club. On yesterdays showing I doubt it.

Roy needs to get rid of ALL of the loan players and sign permanent players in January. We don't need to spend millions, just players who WANT to play for us.

Topps this is a forum. If you don't like a comment, don't be stupid and slag off the person who wrote it. Come up with a decent reply. Spanner not being the starting point. But you want a truthful answer here it is.

Captain = leader. Not a headless chicken. Norris runs round and gives it his all but we need a leader both on the pitch and off it. Was there a call of "man on"? or trying to lift the players after the goals. Didn't see it we rolled over and died. We need a leader with a big mouth to take control and get them working as a unit.
Something that has been lacking all season. Great leaders are people who get a team motivated to do anything, like army officers in the first world war.
leadership is very lacking at the club.

So Topps that is why I made those comments and I stick by them.

Lastly Topps don't question my loyalty to ITFC in any small way, I have dug deep for the club and so get a grip and grow up.

If you can't get a grip and grow up, just ask my Friends wife, he got blown up by an IED. There is more to life than football.........................

got to applaud norris for this, but theres still no getting away from the fact that these are very, very dark days at ITFC now, maybe its just because we deserve at least some sort of success every 10 years!!!!!!!!!!!

Get a former ITFC player on board in a Ray Wilkins type role and maybe the players will see that yesterday was NOT “just another game"

like i said this has probably been taken totally out of context, bet if you listened to the interview it came out totally differant. Also shouldnt the players give 110% irrespective if who they are playing week in week out?

How many seasons now have we had to sit & read an 'It's our fault' story?
This club just baffles me.
Remember when we had a settled team? I've forgotten that feeling. You have NO chance in this league if you can't even name a regular squad. No partnerships in defence, mid-field, or up-front, and even our goalie changes from game to game. I don't understand how the fans can all see that Keane's tactics do not work, yet he and the powers that be, cannot. A million central midfielders, no recognized right or left backs, no strike partnership at all. This team is an absolute shambles, and with about 20 players out of contract in the summer, where does that leave us?
I hate to picture where we may be in the summer. Survival is priority now.

Talk is cheap Chuck! The player saying it changes, but the statement remains the same "We've let the fans down, we're sorry, we need to make it up to them". Stupid thing is this statement always follows a poor result in a big game, where the said player had been releasing statements prior to the match saying they know how big the game is and they are determind to get it right for the fans!! He is right to apologise but its just trying to deflect from the real problems which are the manager not getting it right...its exactly the same as it was at end of Burleys, jims and Joes reigns...proving its time for Keane to go.

Respect for Norris for coming out with this. He worked his knackers off yesterday and was the first to hold his hands up. I agree with Garv, it should be Keane who should formally apologising to all fans as it was his inexplicable decisions that screwed it up. Whilst dire individual mistakes were made, the all round attitude was completely unacceptable. Don't these players realise what this means FFFS. We looked like a team that had never played together........ then thinking about it .... we haven't have we. Get down on your knees Keane. Thank God you're not a surgeon as for every one saved, ten would be dead.

I spoke to some Norwich fans and they said some Ipswich players looked like they did note care. When were were relegated from the prem and had just lost to Liverpool Sheepshanks said some players were laughing and joking on the trip home and that would never happen again at Ipswich. Well it looks like it has,
too many journeyman players and loan players who are just here to pick up a paypacket at the end of the week.
BUT
We have got some good players, I think we have to go back to the style of Joe Royal. He knew we had a poor defence so just attack all the time with the belief
that if opposition score 3 we would score 4 why not try this V West Brom?

PS it's already 23 deg at 6 am over here in Oz

Whats the point saying this??????

Every poor performance or embarassing loss the players come out and say the same old rivvle, then go out the following week and do it all again. I don't want excuses....I just want you blokes to win!!!

Dorsetblue, what can I say? I really do apologise as I forgot when I took offence at your comments, that you were actually on the pitch and could hear everything each player said?

My god man. I cannot believe your criticism is based upon you thinking that Norris should have called man on to O'dea or Delaney. I mean really, have you ever played football, do you have a scooby doo what you are talking about?

I live and work in Norwich and have had nothing but abuse all day long. I was at the game and like the other supporters there, was kept in for 20 mins after the game whilst abuse was hurled at us by the Norwich supporters. I doubt you were even there, so instead you have based your rant on what you saw on the TV.

From someone who WAS there let me tell you that Norris didn't stop talking and encouraging. He covered more ground than anyone else in the team, never gave up chasing to win the ball back or running to support Priskin when we were in attack (not as often as we would like admitedly).

I just cannot believe how narrow minded you are being here, to blame the only player that has had the guts to come out and say sorry. He was the first over to our away support yesterday to apologise and in my mind and many of those standing around me yesterday, he was the only player that showed true passion.

I really am truly embarrassed by some of the comments on this website, but you have stooped to an all time low. We are all utterly frustrated about what is going on at our beloved club right now but your rant was totally misguided.

To be honest fella I have no idea where your head is. For you to bring someone getting blown up by an IED into the conversation is unbelievable. What the hell has that got to do with football? We all have our own problems outside this game and this website has no place for it. You talk about me getting a grip. Take a long hard look in the mirror pal.

I don't give much for the, "We made a mess of it, so we must put it all right next game" mantra, because it wore thin a VERY long time ago. But I'm a bit more inclined to sympathise with someone who at least comes over to ITFC's away fans at the end of the game. ALL the players AND the manager should do this every b**** away game. It's the least they can do to show some appreciation for fans who have spent a lot of money and effort to get there, and it would do wonders to cement a more "we're in this together" kind of feeling. They should come over at the end of the home games too, for that matter. It's not unusual here in Sweden for the whole team to come over to the fans, line up together, and show their appreciation. Is a bit of old-fashioned courtesy too much to ask for, or has corporate football completely lost its soul? Maybe I'm deluded, but whatever: COYB!

Never thought I'd get to the point where everyday I am hoping to find out that the manager of the club I support has been sacked.
But not only that, I never thought I'd have so little regard for the players with the exception of Chuck, Mac, Carlos and the younger local boys.
Please send these loanees back to their own clubs and try to concentrate on developing local talent. Look what Barcelona can do with 9 Catalans in their team (I know we're talking different class, but the point is that most of them are local lads who have come through the clubs ranks). We need the passion and desire back in the club, both in the staff and the fans.
It really frustrates me that the club and the players appear to insulate themselves from the opinions of the fans - do they care as long as they are paid?

The facts are that apart from McCauley and Priskin, the rest of the squad are just average at best and in some cases clearly not good enough. Some managers are able to lift players and get them to play above themselves, unfortunately Keane isn't one of those managers. I so much want to be proved wrong but I fear that when I renew my season ticket for next year it will be to watch the third level of English football.

Topps added 11:55 - Nov 30
It's a sad day, in my view, when we highlight McCauley and Priskin as our best players. We truly must be doomed!
