Edwards Fed Up With Soft Goals
Edwards Fed Up With Soft Goals
Monday, 6th Dec 2010 06:59

Midfielder Carlos Edwards said Town’s habit of giving away soft goals is becoming almost laughable after the Blues gifted Swansea a 3-1 victory at Portman Road on Saturday. That game came only a week after a series of defensive errors handed Norwich City a 4-1 derby win at Carrow Road.

Edwards said: “That’s another one that has got away. Things were looking good at 1-0 up and then we gave two sloppy goals away, again.

“It was the same at Norwich the previous week. It’s not the way to go and we have to sort it out. If we are going to go forward, we have to cut out these soft goals, but we have been saying that for a long time now. It’s getting to the stage where it is almost laughable.”

The Trinidad and Tobago international says boss Roy Keane impresses upon his back four the importance of getting the ball clear: “The manager has been telling us over and over again that the defenders, if they are in any doubt, should put the ball in the stand! But some of our defenders seem to think that they are Franz Beckenbauer. It’s costing us.

“It’s frustrating for the rest of the team, but then we are not scoring enough goals either. We need our strikers to start believing in themselves and scoring some goals. We are all to blame.

“We should be getting better and better, but we are taking one step forward and two back. We are not going forward at all at the moment.”

The former Sunderland man was adamant he should have won his second spotkick in a week when Mark Gower brought him down with the game at 2-1: “It was a penalty and I thought that the referee was going to give it. But I don’t think it cost us the game because we had already conceded two soft goals by then.

“It’s frustrating for the manager and for the fans. Every defeat is painful, but they’re always more painful when they happen at home and this one is a hard one to take. It’s another home defeat and we can’t keep doing this.”

The 32-year-old says the Blues must get back to form quickly: “Preston away is a big game, but then all the games are big now.

“We desperately need to get a win for the manager, the fans and ourselves. This has all been going on for too long. The manager deserves better. We need a win because this is all rubbing salt into the wounds.”

Then he and his team mates should watch how a teams like Swansea tackled the attacking player with 3 or 4 of their own. The entire team, opposition, had a defensive as well as attacking role. We are very poor at defending as a team. We let midfield players have to much time on the ball. We need to clode the ball down at every opportunity. Thats rather basic and I'm sure RK has said this.

Agree with 84 & 81, its ok Edwards coming out & saying "Its not good enough" but he himself hasn't lived upto expectations.

have to totally disgaree i think Edwards has played really well this season and has looked up for it unlike others.... He had a good game on Saturday, was battling the entire game and isnt afraid to take defenders on.

It may help.

Just a thought.

Edwards still has a long way to go to win a large majority of the fans over, myself included, especially after recent comments about the fans.
His form has generally improved from last seasons poor showing, however, he still remains inconsistent for a player Keane spent alarge amount of money on. You could also urgue Grant Leadbitter has yet to find any consistent form this season, and for me personally has been a disappointment so far.
As two of the experienced players in the squad, I'd expect alot more from both Carlos and Grant, and players that should be seen as sources of inspiration to the younger players in the squad.

Yeh cheers for that Edwards. No need to publically have a go at the defence.

Carlos "Roy's Puppett" Edwards should look at his own overall contribution before criticising team-mates.

When Keane do's go it will be a ''new broom'' situation again, and most of the players will be gone Edwards needs to start house hunting now .Not exactly excelled himself!.

Can't understand the Edwards hate, thought he'd really stepped out of his shell since Walters left.

Edwards, Us fans are fed up with all you and your team mates constant bulls**t!!
get out there on the pitch and do your talking instead of mugging us fans off every time we loose!
School boy mistakes cost us that game, Schhol boy mistakes cost us the Norwich game.
Its about time you players stopped finding excuses, YOU ARE TO BLAME!! NOT THE MANAGER!

I think we're still suffering from the same problem as last season: finishing. The chances were there, if we were more deadly in front of goal then we could have been 3-0 up before Swansea started coming back at us. We are not going to win many games 1-0 by relying on our backup youthful defence to work wonders for 90 minutes when they are still learning (without a leader too).

Think Edwards has been one of our better players this year and as for the comments, these players are wheeled out to the press and asked questions. He is only saying it as it is and I reckon he is spot on.
Once again our defence is laughable and take those two mistakes out (Murphy, Smith) and it was a good performance worthy of at least a draw.
Swansea are generally acknowledged as the best 'football' side in the league but we were on top for most the game and until Murphy flapped at that cross he hadnt had to make a save.
Many more mistakes and we will be looking for a new manager but the players will still be here. Boro are a classic example, Mowbray has worked wonders there hasnt he.
Despit publicly taking responsibility, hopefully Keano will have got stuck in to them in the dressing room afterwards.
three points at Preston if we play like Saturday (minus the mistakes).
COYB boys.

its alright for Edwards to say we must stop conceding soft goals, However it would not matter so much if we were scoring them at the other end.
If we were scoring 2 or 3 a game then the odd soft goal is not a problem but at the min as soon as we let one in you just know we are beaten.

1-0 down after 5 mins and you just know the game is over, you can see the opperiation manager start to smile and say job done

Ahh, it's good to see Carlos picking up great team-building skills from the master of this dark art.

Yeah, criticising team-mates in public should do the trick - if what you want is disunity, strife and back-biting.

Good ol' Roy - he's teaching his proteges well...

Laughable Carlos? I think you'll find that few Town fans are finding it very funny...

Reading between the lines... it looks like RK will be an ex Ipswich manager if we loose against Preston.

Sonianblue take off your Blue and Keane tinted glasses , it is laughable that you think we were on top for most of the game against Swansea ,for the first 30 mins it was like men against boys .Apart from maybe a 20 minute spell where we were good Swansea won without really trying very hard at all .
And as for comparing Mowbray that is one manager what about Ericsson,Lambert,Rodgers,Warnock,Boothroyd,Grayson,Mackay,Robins all been in their positions less time than Roy and all above us ?
The simple fact is we have only scored more than 1 goal in a game 6 times out of 20 and concede more than 1 almost every game ,doing that we are going to struggle to win any games

10 goals conceeded in last 3 games without Big Mac speaks for itself really. And of those 10 goals we must have gifted 6 or 7 with bows on for Xmas!

O'Dea has looked shaky since his return (maybe the baby is playing on his mind), Delaney was unklucky to see red in my view at Norwich but don't understand why he wasn't in the squad Saturday (Keane can you explain?). Smith has been playing well for me despite breaking the number 1 rule for a defender the other day and Brown looked fairly solid - a couple of hairy clearances

Preston is now a MASSIVE game..... I think we can safely forget any thoughts of playoffs right now and stop this rot.....

Anyone know when G-Mac is due back?

cracko82 - G-Mac is out for about two months so it's most likely he'll be back in the new year, hopefully fit to play against Arsenal and Chelsea otherwise we'll be battered

I agree with SonianBlue and yes we must stop giving away the soft goals. As Keano stated last week, it's about gatting the basics right.
Perhaps Fulop with his height would have got to the cross for the first and also may have got a touch to Beattie's shot which went over Murphhy's head.
Anyway, getting back to Edwards and trying to find some positives, the build up to the disallowed penalty upenalty in my opinion was a brilliant move including a great give and go with Scotland laying off a perfect ball to Edwards who had continued his run making it impossible to defend against other than by making contact without playing the ball.
