Town Fail With Renewed Move for Kilbane
Town Fail With Renewed Move for Kilbane
Thursday, 6th Jan 2011 09:00

Town failed in a renewed attempt to sign Kevin Kilbane from Hull City before the veteran Irishman moved on loan to Huddersfield over the weekend, according to reports in Ireland. The 33-year-old is the second target the Blues have failed to land on loan this week with Bolton’s Andy O’Brien agreeing to join Leeds United on a permanent basis.

Kilbane was amongst the experienced players Roy Keane has previously said he looked to sign in the summer - along with the likes of Shaun Derry and Lee Carsley - with the club unable to deals with any of them, much to the Town manager’s frustration.

Earlier in the week, Bolton manager Owen Coyle revealed that the Blues had been given permission to speak to O’Brien, but both Leeds and Cardiff City are reported to have been offering significantly better personal terms than Town.

O'Brien has agreed to join Leeds, where he has been on loan since October, on a permanent contract.

Town owner and chairman Marcus Evans again appears to be limiting the funds available to the Blues boss, Keane commenting that the club’s transfer plans would be played “by ear” over the weekend.

Keane, who has said he is looking to sign at least two players in the transfer window and perhaps as many as four, has admitted that he may have to look at loaning out or selling some of the club’s current players in order to bring more in.

It will be interesting to see what happens with our out-of-contract players as the transfer window approaches closure. We could end up having to sell McAuley and others if they dont sign new contracts or risk losing them for nothing come May.

The season could get worse if we start to loose some key players in the next few weeks. With no real sign of genuine replacements our squad in February could be much weaker than our current squad.

Like I said early on in RK's tenure. No scouting network. No idea.

Please, please, please can RK stop trying to sign players who are past their best or ex Sunderland . Ambitious players from League 1 are the ones we should be targeting. Sunderland are not in League 1 so that's a good start! :-)

Failed to sign: DERRY, CARSLEY, O'BRIEN, KILBANE! we missed out signing Kilbane to a League 1 club!!!! WTF is going on!! Now I read Priskin is being targeted by a League 1 club!!! What kind of message does this send out to potential players? Some on here seem to think Priskin is our best player, well if our best player is being linked to Southampton what does that say about the standard of our team?.......

FORK! FOSC! Bad times at PR........

Some of the comments on here are about as inept and inaccurate as Keane's.
Not that I want to defend him but really is it surprising that someone goes from Hull to Huddesfield - after all they both begin with H....
as for getting players in who "like" Keane - diddums. If that's the criteria then we'll be shot to bits inside weeks. Anyway where's the evidence. If anything RK is consistent, fair-minded and every player knows if he trains well he plays - sometimes it is that all-too-fair attitude that lets him down.
Like some on here i do think it is now time to Back Him or Sack Him. This limbo we are now developing is no good for anyone....

Oh dear. So how many more washed up Irish donkeys are we going to try and sign this month?! Talk about a manager that has ran out of ideas (and money)...

I understand there is anger but the negativity is getting ridiculous. Yes, Keane's management style is a joke. Yes, Keane's transfer policy is a joke. In fact, yes, the whole club is a joke, but it is blatently obvious that Evans isn't going to do anything about it, and criticising the few players we do get linked with is getting boring. Kennedy (along with Troy Brown) was our best player against Forest. All you could hear was him shouting to players, trying to get the best out of them, helping Connor Wickham (who I must admit looked incredibly disinterested against Forest). There is no way we should build an entire squad on 'experience' but similarly you shouldn't rely on loanees but we do that the whole time!! I'm ever the optimist with Ipswich, even after watching dire football week-in, week-out, I still reckon we could win our next match. Our best team, I believe (and many will disagree) is as follows:

21. Marton Fulop (Murphy can't kick to save his life, Lee-Barrett is a much better back-up I believe)
2. Jaime Peters -- we need some attacking options down the right, and whilst not the best defender of all time, is a damn sight better than Eastman
22. Troy Brown -- although young and a little naive at times, doesn't seem to make the schoolboy errors his team-mates Delaney and O'Dea do
4. Gareth McAuley -- our best player by a long chalk this season
39. Mark Kennedy -- Reads the game incredibly well, and whilst not the quickest man on the pitch, seems to be the calm head we need at the back
7. Carlos Edwards -- to win games, you need to cross it in the middle. Him and Peters were fantastic against Forest down the right, one of the few bright spots. Corners still useless, but not sure why he doesn't play every week
8. David Norris -- you need someone to harry the ball and do the hard yards
19. Luke Hyam -- looked very accomplished at the beginning of the season
3. Shane O'Connor -- very lively, always eager to win the ball, can inter-change with Kennedy down the left and play full-back if Kennedy goes on runs down the wing like he used to do for Wolves
10. Jason Scotland -- natural finisher who with a bit of service could be a star at this level. Yet to see the best of him
37. Rory Fallon -- good in the air, has perhaps a Counago-esque element to his play the way he likes laying the ball off to the on-coming midfielders.

Subs basically pick themselves. I reckon that team would go a long way in this division. It wouldn't beat the QPR's of this world with players like Taarabt etc, but I reckon it wouldn't finish 19th. I agree Keane should leave, but if he isn't going to, let's all just put up and shut up for 6 more months and then start again in the summer. As badly as we are playing, we are only a few wins off the play-offs as crazy as it seems. A bit of noise at Portman Road on a match day and a couple of wins and things might all turn around. COYB

If this is true, we must again question the input of Simon Clegg - seems to me he's at fault for the lack of signings - not Roy. IF TRUE.
