Jewell in the Town
Jewell in the Town

Town have confirmed former Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan and Derby boss Paul Jewell as their new manager. The 46-year-old has signed a two-and-a half-year contract.

Chief executive Simon Clegg welcomed the new Town boss at a lunchtime press conference at Portman Road: “I’m absolutely delighted to confirm Paul Jewell as our new Ipswich Town manager. The last few days have been long and eventful and we have considered and spoken to a number of people who were interested in the job.

“However, the owner Marcus Evans and I, including being one of only three managers to achieve promotion to the Premier League with two different clubs [along with Steve Coppell and Mick McCarthy], will ensure that we can achieve the goals we have set for this club.

“It’s interesting that on these two occasions promotion to the Premier League cost Ipswich Town automatic promotion and we look forward to Paul giving us automatic promotion in years to come.

“Paul respects the traditions and history of this great club, but we as a club need to be looking forwards and not backwards and I’m sure under Paul under his regime the club will achieve his own history.

“He also recognises the huge importance of the community links that we as a club enjoy, and the owner and I will fully support Paul to ensure that he can achieve the objectives that we have set for this club.”

Owner Marcus Evans added his reasons for employing his new manager: "I wanted to appoint a manager with several years of experience behind them who also had a history of promotion and then staying up.

"I have been lucky enough to find a manager in Paul who has done that twice and pertinently with two clubs who had never been in the Premier League.

"It was also important to bring someone to the club who could play the way Ipswich expect the game to be played and who will embrace the club's role in the community."

Jewell signed his contract with the Blues last night having met with Evans at his company's offices in Dublin on Friday, after he says he was contacted by the Town owner and chairman in the wake of Roy Keane's sacking on Thursday.

The new boss says current coaches Ian McParland and Tony Loughlan will pick the team for Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final against Arsenal with the Jewell years starting in earnest from Thursday.

A bus load of gorgeous ‘models' has just been seen arriving at PR — Jewell obviously bringing his own staff.

Reasonably cheery appointment, and a huge improvement over keane. His record at Bradford was good, and at Wigan it was excellent.

I've been on a Wigan forum to get some info, and apparently he did tend to play round pegs in round holes, which is always a good starting point. They also liked his football, which was a mix of passing short, and using the long ball (not a hoof) to the pacy frontmen. Prefered a 442.

Promising.

Just watched the press conference...unlike Keane's arrogant arrival,Jewell comes across as a very likeable guy with a realistic perspective on what we can achieve over the coming years..very much like Joe Royle's arrival.

Good luck Paul..may you be at ITFC for many a succesful year.

Better times ahead at last.

To be honest, PJ would not be my first choice, but now time to get behind him and the team.

Lets see that ball zipping around on the ground like we are used to and fingers crossed he gets us playing good football and winning once more!!!

I am fairly pleased with the appointment of Paul Jewell, I think he will be in a similar mould to Joe Royle but will not have the financial constraints that Joe had.

I think he is wise to distance himself from the Arsenal game, i am also pleased that he didn't get drawn on the questions of transfer fund. Jim epsecially paid over the odds for players, it is good that we are keeping our cards close to our chest, ME may have millions but he is a businessman too and will want value for money. I also wouldn't want to see wholesale changes in this transfer window. Our current squad should be given time, palyers might have been putting the effort in but they are short on confidence and no ammount of huffing and puffing will beat a player playing with confidence. I'd like to see PJ get our current squad playing better.

I haven't engaged in any of the Keane slagging as it is just too depressing to comment on but the bloke was a joke as a Manager and the whole thing has been an 20 month nightmare on so many levels and thank god he's gone. As to jewell I would have preferred a young hungry coach who sets out to play football but thanks to Keane's ineptitude we probably just don't have the players any more so Jewell is a good appointmemt. Get the lads playing with a smile again, round pegs in round holes, get a system and stick to it, stop the rambling news conferences and play football. The future is bright (ish). BLUE ARMY!

Just watched the press conference. Thought Paul spoke well and honestly. None of the fanfair and silly 'promotion in 2 years' promises. He is spot on in saying the club needs to build longterm. There is no quick fix. Now the aim this season will be to avoid relegation and then get as high up the table as we can with a view to the playoffs next year.

Congratulations! Welcome aboard Mr Jewell and good luck!

I have to admit I was a bit apprehensive when I first heard PJ's name mentioned in connection with the job, but Phil's previous report has done much to reassure me. Cheers Phil!

I also see that both Nathan Ellington and Jason Roberts are available. I wonder if a reunion is on the cards...

I think Jewell's relaxed and amiable manner will serve him well at this club. We need a settled, calming influence right now and Jewell seems like that kind of manager. He needs to relax the players after what was probably quite a scary experience under Keane.

Keane's 'culture of fear' just doesn't work and has lost him two lucrative jobs now.

I will support him, but if the newspaper reports are right, would you not rather of had Alan Curbishley? Curbs seems like a more safer pair of hands to manage the club.

What a shock, didn't see that one coming.... So 2.5 year contract and the plan is now long term, has ME had a change of heart?
I hope he gets the funds for new players and we go in the right direction. Keane may have not been everyone's cup of tea but saying that I think he would have kept us up. Forget promotion it's fighting to stay in this league starting Saturday.
So Mr Jewell welcome to Ipswich now get a shift on and improve this club we all love.

You may have guessed it we don't care if we win or lose but we would rather like to watch football................

petermorris, if u cant say nething positive, go & support the canaries. we dont need fans like you. clegg has only said wot any chief executive wld say immediately after the sacking of a manager. no1 names the successor at the same press conference at which the sacking announced. plus if u read the papers u would know that others were interviewed, & clearly jewell came over better than they did. so stop criticising, & jst support the club.

Welcome to PR and good luck as i think you are going to need it with things the way they are. Now can we all get behind the team and put our own personal preferences as to choice of manager aside and give them some proper support. Some passing play on the deck will go a long way with us Mr Jewell.
