Luton Midfielder Linked With Town Switch
Luton Midfielder Linked With Town Switch

Town are targeting Luton midfielder Andy Drury, according to rumours circulating amongst Hatters fans during their 2-2 draw with Gateshead at Kenilworth Road on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier this month, Coventry boss Aidy Boothroyd dismissed claims that the Sky Blues are set to sign the 27-year-old, who looks destined to make the step up to Championship or League One football this month with Sheffield United also linked.

Drury, who missed Saturday’s match with a hamstring injury amid rumours of a £100,000 or £150,000 switch to Town, began his career with Sittingbourne before joining Gravesend and Northfleet, the club now known as Ebbsfleet, in 2003.

After three years with the Kent club the 5ft 11in tall all-action midfielder or occasional striker moved on to Lewes in 2006 and in 2007/08 helped the Rooks to the Conference South title.

In the summer of 2008 he joined Stevenage and in his first season at Broadhall Way was in the side which won the FA Trophy and reached the Blue Square Bet Premier play-offs.

Last year, Drury and Stevenage finally secured promotion to the Football League, winning the division but losing the final of the FA Trophy to Barrow.

In the summer, Drury eschewed the lure of League Two football to join Luton on a free transfer and has enjoyed a fine half-season with the Hatters, scoring eight goals in 25 games.

After the 3-2 victory over Doncaster, Town boss Paul Jewell said he hoped to make signings this week. With loanees Jack Colback and Jake Livermore gone or imminently going, central midfield looks like an area where the Blues need strengthening, particularly if captain David Norris moves to Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, decathlon legend Daley Thompson has slammed Town chief executive Simon Clegg for his comments regarding the future of the 2012 Olympic stadium earlier in the week: “Simon Clegg left Olympic sport, and he has no credibility in football. To sort that out he's trying to make friends with his new football chums, so he's forgotten all the promises that were made.

“We promised a legacy. We need to be able to stage future World and European athletics championships.”

Dale Jennings of Tranmere is supposed to be a bit useful, would be good if we could snap him up.

who said he is replacing anyone? we have lost colback, townsend and livermore so surely need some cover? a lower league player with potential is ideal? talk about putting two and two together and making 64!!

For the record, Tubbs cost Crawley Town £80k. Crawley also have a wealthy group of backers so don't need the money like most clubs outside the Premiership. An obscene offer may get him but I'd be amazed if £500k does it.

For those who've never heard of him, he's on target for 40 goals this season and is clinical.

Norris is already gone. Replacement needed.

Another Simon Milton perhaps?

I meant to add that Luton rejected a bid in exces of £100k from Crawley for Drury in the last window - although in part it could be due to them not wanting to sell a star player to promotion rivals.

I'd atillbe surprised if £100k was enough.

One can see that Simon Clegg is still really an athletics(and rugby)chap at heart. He would do well to concentrate on players contracts which he has allowed to drag on for far too long.Hope PJ will now be involved to sort out the mess as 21 players is a huge number. If you still want to get involved in other sports then resign from your present job sir.Cant help feeling that ME made the appt to get some leverage re tickets and hospitality in forthcoming games,as must be more better qualified CEO's out there who prefer the round ball to the oval one!

No better than Healy in my opinion, but alas will give any player a chance.

"Simon Clegg left Olympic sport, and he has no credibility in football" - well said DT, spot on!

Interesting move, give the lad a chance if he comes. I'm sure it's just a rumour and it goes no further.

whippet - there are plenty of sad people who never look beyond their beloved ITFC - and don't even consider a player to be anything unless they play in the Premiership / Championship. HOW WRONG THEY CAN BE.

Lower leagues are where we should be looking, unless you are in a promotion race you wont get decent players from the prem/championship anyway. People forget our best signing by far in recent years was Jon Walters and where did we get him from?

I think this guy is a winger btw so not really an exact Norris / Leadbitter replacement

Not Leadbitter, he is a Norris replacement so we can get away with Drury being a winger. Looks like it is going to be Healy/Leadbitter in the middle and the reason why i state this is the following quote from the Pompey manager..

"We know that David Norris wants to join us and hopefully that one can be sorted out, maybe in the next week."

if this is true then i feel that PJ is going in right direction and i hope that our scouts now start earning their keep. Walters is a fine example of what is out there (hasnt that midfielder at Exeter recently been transferred) and for starters i'd look at the two forwards at Hereford.
As for speculation on Norris i'd say that he's on his way to Pompy. He probably wanted 3 years and more money. Sadly he's got that which means we have to look elsewhere! Tuesday could be his last game!!

Tubbs is a prime example of hidden talent in the lower leagues and he just needs a chance to step up - 40 goals in the Conference - even if that equated to 10 in the championship he would be one of our top goal scorers and the key word is CLINICAL (oh and by the way Erika - you are in fact gorgeous and I don't care if you don't want a seat on the board as long as you have one next to me ;)

If we are serious about Andy we should be sure of his fitness....see quote from a recent Footy Matters:

But Drury explains that despite enjoying his time at Broadhall Way, the decision to leave was relatively straightforward.“I had a lot of injuries during my time with Stevenage and the manager (Graham a Westley) put on lengthy training sessions,” says Drury. “Fair play to the manager because those methods have obviously worked but I couldn't continue at that rate.

We should sign on Erika!

TractorBeezer- I remember reading something similar about Drury's fitness.
Hopefully its rubbish , he seems to be a fit lad.
Tubbs would be great, but knowing our luck Norwich or QPR will swoop in and he will be gone!

If Cleggs point is that the new Olympic stadium, as it will be with a running track around it will be unsuitable for football, then he is correct. Who wants to see a match set so far back from the game, its a bit like watching your tv from the back of your garden. Perhaps Thompson would like the stadium to be subsidised by football supporters whilst not really serving their purposes or subsidised by the tax payer and used a handful of times a year by the athletics mob and in that case they should find their own funding if they want to see steroid users run in a circle. Alternatively it could be left there to stand for years and end up as a concert venue a bit like the millenium dome.

Having said this, his general commentd about Clegg are pretty much spot on concerning his credibility and to that i would add his ability.
