Out-of-Contract Norris Targeting More Goals
Out-of-Contract Norris Targeting More Goals
Thursday, 3rd Feb 2011 09:08

Skipper David Norris is looking for more goals having netted his eighth of the season to grab Tuesday’s 2-1 victory at Derby County. Norris, who was one of the players whose contract is coming to an end who met with boss Paul Jewell last week, has now equalled the total managed by last season’s top scorer Jon Walters.

Norris told the club site: "Against Derby, Jimmy and Grant gave me the freedom to bomb forward and I could have had more than the one goal.

"I enjoy that part of the game and the goals have gone in for me this season. I've chipped in with twos and threes and the odd six in the past but this is the best tally of my career.

"It's something I needed to add to my game and hopefully I can knock in a few more and between now and the end of the season."

Boss Paul Jewell said before the Derby match that he was looking for more goals from his midfielders: “I don’t think our defensive record probably isn’t too bad. We don’t score a plethora of goals but I think we can do better all around the pitch.

“That’s not just the front players, at set plays we’ve got to be better, the midfield have to chip in with a few more and the wide players. It’s not just the forwards.”

Norris’s eight goal of the season won’t have done his chances of winning an improved contract any harm, the skipper and Gareth McAuley having turned down offers of new two-year deals before Christmas.

Jewell says that having spoken to the duo and some of the other 21 players who are out of contract in the summer at the end of last week, it’s up to them to show they are worth the enhanced terms they are after between now and May: “I’ve said to the players, and they’re all good professionals, make it difficult for us not to offer them better deals than they’ve been offered already. So the ball’s in their court.

“It’s a difficult situation to come in and manage and it’s one we shouldn’t have let happen with that many, but these things do happen, it has happened and we’ll have to make sure that we try and manage it to the best situation.”

The new boss says no one he spoke to wanted to move on: “No players have said to me that they want to leave. I’m quite happy with that. I’ve had chats with a couple of them and they’ve all said they want to stay and say to the club ‘Listen, give us a better contract than you’ve offered already’.

“I’ve walked into a bit of a nightmare situation here. I’m not trying to say it’s not my problem, because it is because I’m the manager, but this situation shouldn’t really arise.

“I’ve spoken to the players and I know it’s their careers and they’ve all got families, but the most important thing is them playing well for us, us staying in the division and sitting down at the end of the season. If they’ve had a brilliant end to the season, it’ll benefit us and also them.”

The Town boss says if the players had wanted to move on, they could have moved on: “If when I’d spoken to those players, they’d said they wanted to leave, as long as the deal was right for the club, they could leave.

“Look at Torres. At the end of the day, if the guy decides he wants to play football somewhere else, it’s best for all parties, as long as you get your transfer fee then it happens.

“But I assured those players that at this moment in time I’m very happy for them to stay. We could have sold two of them, we turned down offers for them [presumably Crystal Palace’s £800,000 bid for Norris and Damien Delaney], but there’s no way that I’m going to let players go without getting quality replacements in, and I’m quite happy with those players.”

Jewell says the out of contract players he met are happy with where things are at the present time: “They’re comfortable with the situation, that’s the main thing. One of the players told me that when he signed here the manager told him that once you come to Ipswich you don’t want to leave. It’s one of those clubs that once people come to they have an affinity with.

“Sometimes that’s hard because if you want them out the door you can’t move them! But none of the players have said they are unhappy.

“I don’t think finance will be a problem if we want to keep them. Great credit to the players, they haven’t caused a fuss, I called them, they didn’t knock at my door.

“I haven’t spoken to them all, I’m aware of the situation and told them that the best way we can do it is for you to play well and say to the club at the end of the season ‘I’m worth more than you’ve offered’. Everyone’s a winner that way.”

Perhaps he should also target signing a new deal with the blues!!

He clearly doesn't want to go and it wouldn't surprise me if he's taken the advice of his agent to make the fact he can talk to other clubs public just to get a bit more money in his new contract with us!!

So basically they want to stay provided we come close to offering what they could get elsewhere.

Doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Norris, MacAuley and Delaney need to be signed up, not fussed about any of the other 18. People talk about Hyam but he is not a good footballer. Wont make it at this level.

For God's sake Town, sign him up to a new deal...ok,he may not be the most gifted player we've ever had but the guy never stops running.

Personally i'd rather see Leadbitter go.

Players like Norris and Delaney aren't looking for huges sums of money. Chances are, they are both being paid quite nicely at the moment, and they would be happy for things to continue that way. However, what they do want is a three-four year contract. Something that will near enough ensure that they are still playing at a decent level by the time they reach their mid to late 30's. I have no qualms about players saying they want to stay here for the rest of their career. That is the commitment fans like to see.

Boss slams CEO! Jewell knows its a joke it was not dealt with earlier. It's all very well saying the club didnt want to offer big deals in case we went down (as per the show last night), but did the club expect us to go down last summer when the deals should have been sorted?

Yep - a right old mess but hey ho - No one has guarantees of work anywhere - expect greedy bankers - anyone working for a company could be let go next month and you cant do much about it . - If money aint there , it aint there
Football has to change - Paying unproven players £8 to £10k a week is NOT sustainable .- That is a business opinion
From a Fan opinion !!! - Keep one of Leadb or Norris - Leadb is younger
Hyam - I am sorry Clive B - I think he is a good foootballer and could make it in the game .. Seen alot of him and he seems pretty comfortable slotted in there

I am very confident we are on the up and with the core of the team in place - all we need , IMO , is a RIGHT BACK ...please go get Billy Jones ....

What I don't understand is why they're still content on waiting until the end of the season to offer these players deal? Why are they now not sorting (at least) the key ones now? There's nothing to stop the likes of McAuley/Norris etc getting twitchy feet come March or April and signing elsewhere?

If money isn't an issue, according to Jewell, why are we still waiting?

What if Jewell prefers ......... say St Ledger and feels he is better than Delaney.

I still think that Jewell is still looking at the squard and seeing what players he may be able to bring in,in the close season.

ie what is the point of signing Deleany on a 2 or 3 year contract on say 10- 15k a week just as back up. Same could be said for Norris, if Jewell want to make Bullard a permenant signing, this would free up wages.

What if the money we are now paying Bullard and Drury was used on the contract of Norris , McAuley, Delaney, we may not have been able to afford them. We were also pushing to get Austin which was reported we were offering him 12k a week

Counago and Lisbie contract run out at the end of the season and Bullard will go back to Hull so that will free up 30-40k a week, so that could be when the players are offered new contracts, also it depends on who we let go and who Jewell would like to bring in

I strongly suspect PJ and the Town management expect us to gain promotion via the play-offs this year and don't want to be lumbered with 22 players on 3 and 4 year contracts to ship out in the summer.

(Actually, that's almost really funny)

Norris McAuley and Delaney are a strong base for our team and I for one would not like to see any of them go. As for Hyam very surprised at CliveBaker as the boy has undoubted talent. When he got injured it was no coincidence that we started sliding down the table. The holding role he played early on was vital and we had no one to replace him. I think he has a great future but only my opinion.

Everything will be fine

Spring will come we will be in 10th place and only 3 or 4 points adrift. The birds will chirp. The blossom will be on the trees and all will feel that something has changed and is happening again.

I honestly believe it is the agents that need to be taken out and shot. We cannot be held to ransom by unrealistic wage demands and they know it. All will be well.

Cleggy, if DN is confident about scoring goals why not try offering him a performance related pay contract - no not like the bankers or your own contract, ya know, the one where if you do well you get rewarded.

Try this:

Sit with your face 30-35cm away from your screen. With ITFC_Wickham_09's last post filling your screen, relax your eyes as if to focus on infinity (like looking through the screen itself). What do you see?
