Jewell: We Never Looked Like Scoring
Jewell: We Never Looked Like Scoring
Tuesday, 15th Mar 2011 23:03

Town boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side never looked like scoring at one end and gave away silly goals at the other as they lost 3-0 at home to Watford. The Blues manager again bemoaned his side’s lack of penetration.

Jewell said: “I think at the end of the day we gave goals away for fun, silly goals. In between the boxes, I think we probably had more possession than them, but did you think we were really going to score a goal?

“How many crosses did we have flashing across the box? How many freekicks did we have? How many corners? We just haven’t got anyone who wants to get on the end of them, it’s as simple as that.

“You can dress it up which ever way you want. You can dress it up any way you want. We had plenty of possession.

“The second goal summed us up. Pretty passes, then we get brushed off the ball in midfield and the next thing we’re picking the ball out of the back of the net. We’re not ruthless in either box, it’s a simple as that.”

The Blues boss felt the early Watford goal was comical series of errors: “We tell the players to make sure when the ball goes out of play to come alive. It was a silly corner we gave away, the next thing, there’s two-v-one and it was a catalogue of errors.

“From there we were always playing catch-up. We did all right, we had freekicks and hit the post but when it comes out off the post I don’t think anyone was going to stick their head in and get a cut eye.”

Jewell says there’s much to be done before he gets the side he wants: “You can see we lack a bit of pace in the team, even going forward we can’t get beyond players and behind teams, so we’ve got a lot of work to do.

“Against Portsmouth we opened them up for fun but we couldn’t score. But tonight, I was looking at the game at 2-0 down with 15 minutes to go and do I really think we’re going to get back in the game? And the answer is no. That’s eight or nine home games we’ve lost now this season, which tells its own story.”

Watford boss Malky Mackay was delighted with the result and with the early goal: “We started off very well, we highlighted the fact that if we got a short corner we might be able to get the two-v-one.

“We put a great ball in and it starts us off with a great platform and allows us to suck Ipswich on to us and catch them on the counter, which we did well.”

The former Canary inevitably had praise for striker Danny Graham and said there was a row in the dressing room about who scored the first goal: “There’s a big debate down there as to whether that first goal was his or Troy’s. They’re both claiming it!

“I think tonight you could see why Danny is what he is - he’s a total team player. He’ll run a back four down on his own.

“He’s a threat in behind and he’s a threat when he comes short. I think he had an awful lot to do on the second goal and it was a quality finish.

"But the measure of the boy is that he’s a team player and that’s the centre forward that you want in your team - someone who’s not just a poacher but is a team player, and he’s certainly one of those.”

"this media man will take us nowhere..neither down nor up..he is a mouth on a little fat stick.. "

That's right, just like he didn't take Bradford and Wigan up (and keep them there).

You can't possibly judge Jewell until well into next season. There was no way he was going to be able to do anything other than damage limitation in the transfer/loan window. For a start he had to assess the players he inherited. And then the market in January is incredibly difficult - any decent player in any team still fighting for promotion/against relegation is going to be hard to get.

Look at a team like Arsenal - they might still be in with a chance of winning something if they'd bought a decent keeper and some centre backs in January but you can't just pick up quality at short notice.

As someone else said, Bullard - his main signing - has already been worth 6 points to us since he arrived.

This summer will be the real test - of both Jewell and Evans/Clegg. Painful though it may be there's something to be said for being glad about performances like last night as it's showing Jewell the true colours of some players. If we'd finished the season on a real high it might have encouraged him to paper over the cracks.

Once again waste of money , very very poor, poor gate, people leaving well before the end, norwich taken the pis??? out of us, this is now what ITFC has become and do not blame all of this on RK. This is to do with some of the present staff and players.

"Never look like scoring"..... Come on..!! Scotland and Priskin are rubbish. Get Wickham up front with Murray. Give Jamie Peters and O'Connor a start as they are going to give 100%. Play 4-4-2. I'm no expert but bloody hell, try something different....shake it up a bit...give us fans "something" to get slightly excited about. Last night was P*SS POOR...!!!!!!

Points that made me frustrated lastnight:

1) No one wanted the ball (apart from super Jimmy)
2) when a cross went in none of our attacking players actually attacked the ball in the area! -Thats why we are not scoring any goals
3) After a poor run of home form we played 4-5-1 again....fair enough! but when things went bad Jewell didnt change shape or tactics he just reolaced man for man. Why complain your not scoring when you dont play 2 upfront at home?!

It's been a poor season, I think we can all agree on this. Why does everyone have to be so negative though? This might be a forbidden word on this forum but look at Norwich... They went down two seasons agao, imagine how their fans felt? but now they've put together a team that wants to win and usually does, painfully for us. Lets get behind the manager and stop moaning at each other and the players. I'd like to see a 4-4-2 formation it would suit the strikers we have at the club

When Jewell took over results picked up.
Regular posters put this down to his man management skills, suggesting that he would bring about new confidence with the players he inherited.
Everything in the garden was certainly a lot rosier now we had got rid of that nasty man keane.
WHY is it then, that now results and individual performances are very poor you continue to lay the blame our ex managers door.
Whenever i hear Jewell speak he more or less recites word for word Keanes reasons as to why the team are struggling.
No,i'm not related to Keane or do i agree with every decision he made ,but guys and girls ,you can't have it both ways.
Just an observation that's all!
3pts Sat i hope.

does anyone else think the lateness in getting the season ticket renewals out, compaired to previous seasons might be down to the board sh-----g themselves over our form, next seasons renewals could be very dissappointing!
(i hope i am proved wrong)

Atmosphere was sensational yet again wasn't it? Let's get behind PJ and the team ffs! The booing at full time just beggars belief; as if that reaction is helpful. Is it any wonder our home form is so poor? Of course I accept that the whole evening was a disappointment (to say the least!) but PJ's not going to turn things around overnight. We need to stick together. COYB! By the way, have the "why haven't we brought a striker in" brigade noticed that the transfer window is closed and the emergency loan window is not exactly bursting open with strikers wanting to leave their clubs!!

Wrexham blue. Well said. Any decent striker is not going to be allowed to leave on loan or otherwise at this time of the season. We have to make do with what we have at the club untill seasons end then Mr Jewell can begin the rebuilding process, so in the meantime, lets get behind the club.
