Trust Hits Out at FA
Trust Hits Out at FA
Thursday, 9th Jun 2011 14:35

Town’s Charitable Trust has hit out at the FA for withdrawing the licence for its Girls’ Centre of Excellence, along with 17 similar schemes at other clubs. The twice-a-week sessions have been running for a 10 years with around 500 girls having taken part, some progressing into the Town women’s side and England youth set-up.

The Trust’s operations director Matthew Try said: “Unfortunately, we have been one of several high-profile centres of excellence not to be handed a new licence despite the best efforts of the staff involved, who had put forward an excellent case for us to be included.

“Other high-profile casualties include Fulham, Charlton, Watford and Reading, all of whom have an excellent and long-standing track record, alongside our own at Ipswich, in the delivery of high-end girls’ football.”

An FA spokesman said the change came about after a process of consultation: “This restructure has resulted in some existing FA Centres of Excellence no longer receiving an FA licence as their application was not as strong as others in their locality.

“The FA is personally communicating with all these centres individually as to these reasons. We sympathise with all the players and staff who will be affected by this restructure and will help identify opportunities which enable them to continue accessing appropriate levels of coaching and support.”

The Trust say they will continue to try to offer coaching despite the loss of the FA licence.

Ridiculous decision by another ridiculous football ruling body! The FA should be encouraging ALL clubs to take part in this kind of scheme instead of squashing it under their jackbooted heels!

Watford had theirs cut too and started an online petition. Suggest the Trust do the same.

Not as good as others in the locality? So who else locally is offering better facilities and training?

So much for the FAs aim to improve grass roots football and develop the Women's game. Ipswich has an outstanding record of developing football for girls over many years and this has now been totally wiped away. I hope when our CEO returns from the sun in Cyprus he will make a very strong protest at this shameful decision.

Perhaps the FA should take a long hard look at themselves. They have been in the press over FIFA's shoddy decisions and "corrupt" behaiviour, this smacks of similar things. It doesn't matter whether it's girls or boys football, they should be encouraging great training at EVERY level, and if a club like Ipswich have been offering that for 10 years, why take it away? It makes no sense.
And yes, I'd love to know who offers better training nearby. Are we talking about the budgies? I'm sure they offer a similar level of coaching at this level, but does that mean our lot have to go there? No offence to smaller Suffolk towns, but I can't believe any of them can offer what a proffesional club can offer.
Start the petition now, I'll sign. Disgraceful.

Massively disappointing from the FA, who should be doing more to encourage this sort of scheme. Hopefully the Trust will be able to continue running these courses regardless of this beaurocratic nonsense.

Will happily sign the petition

How can the FA do this to these highly talented girls, their families, and their coaches?

I feel incredibly sad for all of these people.

My own daughter had previously experienced a life-changing love of football through the excellent ITFC Girls COE, and now proudly plays for Ipswich Town Women each Sunday.

My own family's enthusiasm & deep love of the game has taken a significant negative jolt here, by the penny-pinching rich overlords that purportedly rule and administer our wonderful game.

My understanding is that we are merely talking here about just a few £k a year which the FA gives to assist Ipswich for a COE catering upto 60 girls each season, (between the ages 10 to 16) a small team of coaches, pitch hire, which have matches against other clubs in the East region (including Arsenal, Watford, Colchester, Norwich, Cambridge etc).....the cost of this wonderful facility is truly peanuts out of an FA Budget of £millions!

The FA and the Premier league should be actively promoting and campaigning to encourage all men, women & families to not only participate in football, as well as watch football and support their professional team.

Instead, it proves that the FA is completely out of touch in its attempts in building life-long links to the family. This inevitably translates into ongoing downward spiral of decreasing numbers of paying supporters at the turnstiles on a Saturday afternoon!

Seriously, when is common sense going to prevail and the FA, FIFA et al put a cap on the disgusting amounts of television cash that line the pockets of the few Premier clubs while they so magnanamously just plant a few pennies back into grassroots football - before the inevitable happens and the professional game ends up its own backside?

The more money that seems to flood into football, sems to be spent by the minority self-serving greedy rich clubs who in turn line the pockets of rich journey-men players. No thought or respect is given anymore to the innocent/pure family love of football, and the close community bonding links to their local club.

The Ipswich Town COE for Girls has been amazingly succesful over the past 10 years. There has been some incredibly talented girls coached & progressed through to Ipswich Town Women & some representing England.

I hope and pray that someone, somewhere, may read my rant....and provide a future solid financial support for this superb girls COE, and thus maintain the future of girls/womens football generally in Ipswich.
