Ellington Continues to Be Linked With Town
Ellington Continues to Be Linked With Town
Thursday, 16th Jun 2011 13:32

Released Watford striker Nathan Ellington continues to be linked with a move to the Blues. The 29-year-old was rumoured to be the player who held talks with manager Paul Jewell at Portman Road on Monday with his name subsequently mentioned in a couple of national newspapers.

Ellington, who played for Jewell at Wigan, finished last season on loan at Preston with the relegated Lilywhites understood to be keen to sign him on a permanent basis.

The 5ft 10in tall frontman started his career with Walton and Hersham before moving on to Bristol Rovers, the Latics and then West Brom for a £3 million fee in August 2005.

Since signing for Watford for £3.25 million in August 2007, the Bradford-born striker has spent time on loan at Derby County during Jewell’s spell there as manager and in Greece with Skoda Xanthi.

if i remember rightly when ellington and watford came to us last season he was an influential part in our defeat.i can see him playing the role jason scotland had last season looking to bring players into the game but more importantly he made good decisions when he was facing the goal eg,runs to take players away, quick passing and able to take up good attacking positions. get him in p.j. .the manager has hinted that we may have two upfront this season, so i if we sign nathan that will be the strikers sorted then we can turn our sights round to midfield and defence.

Shefki Kuqi he ain't. Shefki had courage, enthusiasm and energy unfortunately the "Duke" hasn't displayed these for many a year.

I can see why some people are in favour. A freebie, on a low wage is admittedly a small risk If it doesn't work out and a real coup if it does. I'm also keen as anyone to see us engage in some selective, shrewd transfers rather than a "spend, spend spend" approach.

If there are literally no other strikers on our radar, and if Connor is staying put, then ok, one more striker is better than one less, but IMO there really are better options out there.

I really hope not, he's done nothing for years, failed at the top level & he reminds me of someone.......Jason Scotland, that;s it!! If we are really interested in promotion then lets build a team based on young talent with older wiser heads in key positions, not on 'has-beens'!!!

Sorry - have been very impressed and pleased with the players purchased and linked to us, but this would not be a good signing.

Theres no point no if his scoring record is crap, whats the point of him being put on the wage bill? I think as its looking atm with sighnings and prospects and PJ keeping everything close to his chest, i think sighn him if we're only desprate. Bloody great first sighning from PJ good old Chopra!

This wouldn't be the worst signing ever. No transfer fee involved, probably on low wages after a barren few years, although he will be 30 by the time the season starts. A 6 month/one year deal with the the option for more/performance based incentives? Would be a relatively low risk signing given that PJ managed to bring the best out of him at Wigan and Ellington needs to really step up a gear this year if he wants to make anything from the rest of his career.

PJ needs to bring in quite a few players this summer. They can't all be big money signings...

Well worth a punt on a freebie. If any one can kickstart his career, Mr Jewell can.

Very happy to take him as a squad player assuming we don't pay too much in wages - got to be better that Scotland as a support striker and linked with Chopra may actually rediscover his earlier potential - 29 is not old for a striker and he clearly knew where the net was when he played with Roberts at Wigan

Goals to games ratio since 2005 ( approx 1 in 5) not nearly good enough, similar to priskin,s rate over a similar period,,, thanks but no thanks....COYB

Can't hurt as a back-up. Hopefully the intention isn't to have him alongside Chopra as our main strikers every game.
Preston wanted him permanently-they thought he could do a good job in League 1.
If we saw a striker doing well in League 1 and putting in lots of goals- we would probably have been quite happy to sign him up in December.....
Unfortunately he's had a bad few years though- no idea why. Remember him being compared to Darren Bent a few years back....

Nah, he's rubbish!

Priskin, Wickham, Chopra and Adu with young Murray chomping at the bit.

Christ pazelle, why don't you go and find Adu and bring him here yourself?

I would be happy enough with him on a freebie as back-up leaving PJ to spend cash on a couple of defenders and midfielders. However if Wickham is not in our squad, Ellington isn't good enough as a replacement IMHO. Then again In Jewell I Trust

Ellington has had a lot in his personal life in the last 4 years, including a change of religion, which although sounds lame as an excuse has had a huge effect on him.

My mate up in Wigan knew him quite well when he was up there and the distractions of this and then the alleged threats against him when he changed religion to marry his muslim girlfriend was a lot for him to take.

I firmly believe he could do the business for us and that Jewell will know how to get the best from him. No-one played well at Derby so that can't be seen as a measure of how Jewell can work with a player.

Not the most inspiring but can't score any less than Priskin in 2 seasons...can he ?
