Jewell: Championship So Tough
Jewell: Championship So Tough
Friday, 17th Jun 2011 10:03

Town boss Paul Jewell assessed the Blues’ 2011/12 fixture list after its release earlier today and says it shows what a tough league the Championship is. The Blues manager begins his first full campaign at Town with an away game at Bristol City, followed by a visit by Hull City.

Jewell said: "It just proves what a tough league this is. Bristol had a slow start last season but picked up and were on a good run when we went down there and beat them.

"Hull were in the Premier League two years ago, Southampton have played at that level and are on a roll after coming up. Then you've got Leeds, Blackpool and Coventry, all who've been in the Premier League, after that.

"I know it's a cliché but it's true, every manager will tell you that every game in this division is tough.

"The fixtures coming out is an exciting time though. Managers, players, supporters, the media, they will all be looking at the games and counting down the days to August 6th."

I think you're spot on KarlosF. Although PJ has got a couple of players in, I do not yet feel confident of anything much more than mid table again.

Based on the players we have now, if we sign these 5 more and Wickham stays i see no reason why we cant be pushing for play offs. However the 5 need to be players in the Bullard/Dyer/Sharpe type of players who can take us forward.

Feel West Ham will walk the league this year looing at the players they are bring in Faye/Nolan

The league seems to get harder every season. As we stand we will be mid table, however, get in some of the players we are after and should really be in the play offs.

I think any town fan should be happy if we get into the playoffs and give ourselves a chance at promotion!

Just heard Jason Koumas is a free agent, if it is not possible to sign Bullard then i see Koumas as another option!!

yes it will be hard but i think a top 8 position playing better football will be ok, but with a few more arrivals we could go well into the top 6. i think in pj we have one of the best managers in the league, we have a proven goal scorer up front so i am hopefull.

Almost can't believe the pessimism, we have decent manager for the first time in years, who knows where he'll take us. I'll judge the side once it's built and the season begins, not before. Whatever happens, I am confident that this season we see us play the best football since Royle left.

All the teams in this league are very simular in stature and in the quality of players, some of whom got in and around the playoffs and some fight relegation and sit in mid table. The difference between them was that teams like Reading went on a very good winning streak in a key part of the season, theres no reason why we cant do that this season where confidence can make us look like a team fighting for promotion. Look at Blackpool, no one thought they would go up and the same for Norwich, they just got in too some good form in key parts of the season and went with it till the end of the season.

So with a couple of good signings in the form of a creative midfielder, full backs and wingers, then theres a good chance we'll have the side to do that.

Fixture list looks like a whole load of non descript teams living on past achievements. Anyone could win the league anyone could get relegated. Like earlier posts, if we get in some genuine quality in then we have every chance. But based on initial signings we are accepting average again instead of real quality e.g. Buying Chopra and not Billy Sharpe.

much ado about nothing. Of course PJ will say its a tough league, who wouldnt .We need some new players, and then its a case of ''suck it and see''.It is looking like we will being going into new season with PJs team, not misfits left over from the seasons gone by.So lets keep fingers crossed and hope we can have a good campaign .COYB

I think it will not be easy again but if Town get players in with the right will-to-win attitude then I think we can progress. It is the mental side of our game as much as the skill factor that has let us down to date and I feel sure that Paul Jewell will be addressing this in the transfer market.

ITFCsince67: since when is Chopra average compard to Sharp (and please note the spelling, why is everyone insisting on getting it wrong)? Have you looked at Sharp's goalscoring record? He scored 16 last season. Priskin scored that for Watford before we bought him (for much less than Doncaster turned down for Sharp). Norris got only a few less than that and we're not suggesting he's God's gift to midfield, let alone strikers!

Fact is that Sharp had a good season, but by no means a prolific one. He isn't that much younger than Chopra and has achieved an awful lot less in his career so far, and so was being horribly over-priced. Chopra is proven at this level over several seasons and was an absolute bargain at that price. He had a very average season by his standards and still scored 11. so I find that kind of comment just utterly baffling. It's negative for the sake of it, ignore the facts, they only get in the way.

Some comments on here really are laughable.

And yes we may end up mid-table but as Norwich showed last year, anything is possible given the right motivation and management.

Phew! Got that off my chest.

I feel at present we will be fighting relegation with the squad as it stands needs at least 5 players to be better than last year !!!

ITFC67 if you are going to moan about signings have some factual back up

Chopra 147 championship games 63 goals
Sharp 113 games 38 goals

I am no maths wiz but can see Chopras goal ratio is better ,and the only time Sharp played for a bigger club with more expectency and pressure he failed dismally . Hardly real quality as you say ?

I am fully behind Ipswich, however........

I think we have to be realistic, we are not the force we once were. We do have a very good manager, but the squad is lacking.

I really feel if we can keep Wickham and sign 3 quality players and 1 or 2 decent squad players things will look very different.

But if we don't make the signings we will be off the pace, clearly not enough strength in depth atm.

Hold on a minute !!! We have the best manager we have had in years, got rid of the deadwood, started to bring in the right players, with I am sure more to follow so why all the doom and gloom ????

naa added 11:57 - Jun 17
pitseablue: exactly! I've no idea what is wrong with so many fans. We have a decent manager who likes to play good football. We've signed a good player for a bargain price, he's after players in all the right positions and we're being linked with players that most of us think would be good signings.

What's wrong?

Granted, we need to start signing some players but there's plenty of time yet.

dirtydingusmagee mm "of course he is going to say that any manager would" I seem to remember a person whose name shall not be mentioned saying any idiot could do top half... Another sign of a decent manager saying the right things maybe ....

Doom and gloom boys on here are unbelievable! Its still early days in the transfer market and we have signed a quality striker, also a very good defender with experience and I believe St Ledger will come in as well giving us two solid centre backs and an out and out goalscorer, not had that in a long time at PR. Also we know Jewell is looking at around 5 more signings and with the targets he is identifying I am sure were moving in the right direction.
On top of all this Paul Jewell is a very good manager so when we are playing sides with similar squad strength to ourselves I have faith in his ability to get the tactics right to get a result. All in all its going to be an excellent season for all at PR! COYB!
