Blades Keen to Keep Hold of Lowton
Blades Keen to Keep Hold of Lowton

Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson says he is keen to keep hold of 22-year-old defender Matt Lowton, who is understood to be a target of Town and Blackpool. Earlier today, reports claimed the Blades had put a £4 million price tag on the Chesterfield-born youngster.

Wilson said: “He did fantastic here last season and we are trying to tie all our younger lads down and keep them here longer.

“We have not had any approaches for Matt and, at the same time, we would not encourage them anyway.

“He is one of the young lads who have done very well since breaking into the team and I want him to keep progressing with us.”

Wilson is a fan of Lowton’s versatility: “Matt can play numerous roles but he seems to be excelling in the right-back position at the moment.

“We want him to enjoy that role but if we are struggling for cover as the season goes on in other positions then I’m sure he will be happy to fill in.

“It is going to be Matt’s first full season and we just want him to keep progressing and getting better with us.”

Elsewhere, sources said to be close to released Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker are reported to have played down last night’s reports that the former England U21 international skipper had spoken to Town.

The quotes from their chairman are the quotes that should have been coming from ours about Wickham! We should have held out for more!

Re:Lowton - Don't pay £4 million for a division 3 player that's my motto! That's almost enough to secure Bullard!

From what has happened so far it seems PJ has been very busy but not shouting about who he is after, he has made some good signings so far taking in age experience potential etc. We can all speculate but we all have to believe as well. i for one am really pleaed with progress and will be behind them all at the start of the season. Its a shame that certain individuals are already giving new signings (Chops in particular) a hard time before they've even kicked a ball for us

In the same way that we were 'keen' to keep Wickham, and Preston were 'keen' to keep St Ledger. We could get him for a million.

I can understand why they want that price,a workmate is a true blade and he rarely misses a game. he reckons they had 2 bids of 5 million from Bolton and Everton last year, he says the lad is the best player by a mile at the club. So 4million may be a good price?
