Jewell Makes New Striker Bid
Jewell Makes New Striker Bid
Wednesday, 20th Jul 2011 12:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have made an offer for another striker but says that the target isn’t Sheffield United frontman Ched Evans. The Welshman has been linked with Town on a number of occasions this summer with reports on Monday claiming a £1 million bid had been turned down.

Jewell says he has made a move for a third new frontman of the summer but not for the same player he was chasing during last week’s Holland trip: “We’ve made an offer for a striker and we’ll hopefully hear from them on Thursday. That’s a different striker [than we were waiting on before].”

While Town have not made an offer for Evans, the Blues boss says that a future approach is not out of the question: “Someone said to me that we’ve had a £1 million bid turned down. That isn’t the case.

“People are speculating about Ched Evans. He’s a player that’s on the list but we haven’t made an offer for him.”

The newly-relegated Blades are desperate to offload Evans’s £15,000-a-week wages with the 22-year-old now understood not to have joined the rest of his team-mates on the club’s pre-season training camp in Malta.

Middlesbrough, Leicester and Cardiff have also been linked with the former Manchester City man, who joined the Blades for £3 million in the summer of 2009.

Jewell says he's confident that he'll get the additional players he's after before the season begins: "We know we need a couple of players and we're hopeful of that happening before the start of the season.

"We know the players we want. We're looking for two or three players and hopefully they will be here and ready to go for the Bristol game.

"We're looking at all areas of the pitch. We know we're still short and we're determined to get the players in we need."

I don't get the obsession with signing another striker! Yes, the fans want to see goals, but as the team stands now, we will score 2 - 3 goals a game which is great. The only problem is, that we will be letting in 3 - 4 goals at the other end.

I think PJ is doing a great job and think the signings so far (in general) have been very shrewd. Would however feel much more confident if the defensive problems were being addressed. I am sure PJ has some ideas on who he wants or has something up his sleeve, but would be good to see something happen in the next week.

Not sure who the striker is.

Maybe Sordell seeing Watford have signed Inwello (spelling?)

I'd be living in a dream world saying Shane Long.

Wouldn't mind Simon Church tho.

It's all secret at Portman Road, innit?

The Man With The Bag Over His Head doesn't want to be associated with the Club.

The nice-but-dim General is supposed to be intelligent but he certainly keeps that secret.

Now we've got chubby chops Jewell being secretive about players.

Does he conduct negotiations via written notes hidden under the second park bench to the left in Christchurch Park?

Who gives a toss?

Something not secret. The Man With The Bag Over His Head is skint and keeps all the money.

So, signings by chubby chops will be old, past it and nearly free. No secret there.

Odds on chubby chops legging it by Christmas?

I think he is right about the money, the reason we are still poncing about trying to find players is because we are shopping in the bargain basement, forget all this talk of loads of cash from the Wickham sale, Evans has that and PJ has the remainder of the 5M he was given at the end of the season, which means about 3M tops, we are trying to find bargains and it is difficult, the main priority should be a decent midfielder who can pass, sell Leadbitter if you need more cash.

I calculate that club has made about 10m on transfer fees in last two years.Dont know whats going on with getting all these free transfers some could be ok but would have been more reassured if had spashed out some money on somebody like Craig Mackhail Smith.
Priority though must be another CB bearing in mind defence conceded 14 goals in last four games of season ;but beginning to get worried that unlike previous two Managers PJ has only been allowed to spend just over one and a half mill by Marcus Evans, expect have upped wages structure to accomodate the big name mature players he has signed so far.

Im not sure Sordell is a good partner to Chopra, we do need someone with a bit of height to compliment him. I think Lambert might be worth an enquiry? Tall, powerful, scores goals, set pieces? Whittingham would be quality, but im not sure Cardiff will sell 2 of their better players to their league rivals? Treacy still sounds a good shout, but i like Gradel..he was fantastic at Leeds last year, and theyre not challenging next year. A new CB is a necessity, I like Smith, he was solid when called upon last season and played well in the world cup, Delaney is past it, but the fact that the 2 of them have played much of pre season together is good if we have injury problems.
