Jewell Makes New Striker Bid
Jewell Makes New Striker Bid
Wednesday, 20th Jul 2011 12:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have made an offer for another striker but says that the target isn’t Sheffield United frontman Ched Evans. The Welshman has been linked with Town on a number of occasions this summer with reports on Monday claiming a £1 million bid had been turned down.

Jewell says he has made a move for a third new frontman of the summer but not for the same player he was chasing during last week’s Holland trip: “We’ve made an offer for a striker and we’ll hopefully hear from them on Thursday. That’s a different striker [than we were waiting on before].”

While Town have not made an offer for Evans, the Blues boss says that a future approach is not out of the question: “Someone said to me that we’ve had a £1 million bid turned down. That isn’t the case.

“People are speculating about Ched Evans. He’s a player that’s on the list but we haven’t made an offer for him.”

The newly-relegated Blades are desperate to offload Evans’s £15,000-a-week wages with the 22-year-old now understood not to have joined the rest of his team-mates on the club’s pre-season training camp in Malta.

Middlesbrough, Leicester and Cardiff have also been linked with the former Manchester City man, who joined the Blades for £3 million in the summer of 2009.

Jewell says he's confident that he'll get the additional players he's after before the season begins: "We know we need a couple of players and we're hopeful of that happening before the start of the season.

"We know the players we want. We're looking for two or three players and hopefully they will be here and ready to go for the Bristol game.

"We're looking at all areas of the pitch. We know we're still short and we're determined to get the players in we need."

Adam le Fondre please, 50 league goals in his last two seasons for Rotherham in League 2, wants to play at a higher level and I think he only has a year left on his contract. Not a tall fella but cannot really understand what the fascination is with having to play 'a big man' upfront to partner Chopra. See no reason why he cannot step up to the Championship, should not cost the earth and would leave plenty left over to spend money where it is needed most - defence.

Adam Le Fondre is not a Championship standard player let alone one to get us out of this league. Have you ever watched him? A carthorse who even League 2 defences have now found out - look at how few goals he scored in the second half of last season. If he was any good he would have moved on by now, but he hasn't because managers watch players rather than just looking at statistics as many on this site appear to do.

Lancsblue - Please share with us who you have in mind as perhaps you are someone who may 'watch players rather than just looking at statistics'.

Hull City manager Nigel Pearson has refused to comment on the future of record-signing Jimmy Bullard.Bullard, 32, has two and a half years remaining on his contract but has been linked with Ipswich Town and Queens Park Rangers in recent months.

When asked if Bullard has a future at the club, Pearson told BBC Radio Humberside: "There's nothing to add at this point.

"This conversation is going nowhere so we'll leave it at that."

Bullard, who spent the latter part of last season on-loan at Ipswich, is the club's highest earner on a reported ?50,000 per week and the Tigers are keen to lose that from their wage bill.

Newly-promoted Premier League side QPR expressed an interest in signing the former Fulham midfielder on-loan but Hull were not prepared to subsidise his wages, wanting only to offload him on a permanent basis.

Dont know who the striker is but should think that he wil be in the larger target man mold rather than a sharp/chopra type. I am wondering about links to players such koumas , marney traecy ect any of whom would be very welcome additions.Do wish people will let go of any thoughts about bullard if he was going to be here, He would be here by now.Let it go!!!

Jordan rhodes, my god lets forget this. Same with dyer, same with bullard. What i am interested in is this club actually putting some money down, instead of seemingly trying to string fans along to keep sweet. If you want something, it may cost you. The club seems intent to try and mug other clubs in distress for young players on the cheap along with getting oldies on their last deal. Boateng must have seen through it. You just took in 8 million for wickham. Go and offer cardiff 3 million for whittingham, 2 mill for evans a perfect foil for chopra, and split remaining 3 mill on a centre half, a right back and a defensive midfielder at a million a chuck. If you dont do this, the claims of we dont not need to sell wickham would appear to be a crock.and dont quote wages, as we have dropped a lot of our high earners. And clegg is one more we should drop as i havent got a clue what he would fill his time with on a day to day basis.

It's Billy the fish. I got that from some one who saw his bowl parked outside the ground. He's good in the air but not so good ball to fin. Has had a few respiratory problems of late, but could be on a free so worth a punt.
Like Scotland he has a tendency towards over eating... But in Billy's case it could prove fatal.
PJ has long been an admirer and has been angling to poach him for some time. He said recently said "Billy is some one who knows where the back of the net is.... For about 20 seconds, but that's all it takes."

Sorry about the rapid degeneration into references to football related comics of the 80 s and 90 s

I'd forgotten that Billy had been tied to a goal post and shot by firing squad... Must have been someone else's bowl!

@thebeat nice one

If we are to play hoofball (no defenders who pass forwards), we need a big man up front.
