Jewell Makes New Striker Bid
Jewell Makes New Striker Bid
Wednesday, 20th Jul 2011 12:00

Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues have made an offer for another striker but says that the target isn’t Sheffield United frontman Ched Evans. The Welshman has been linked with Town on a number of occasions this summer with reports on Monday claiming a £1 million bid had been turned down.

Jewell says he has made a move for a third new frontman of the summer but not for the same player he was chasing during last week’s Holland trip: “We’ve made an offer for a striker and we’ll hopefully hear from them on Thursday. That’s a different striker [than we were waiting on before].”

While Town have not made an offer for Evans, the Blues boss says that a future approach is not out of the question: “Someone said to me that we’ve had a £1 million bid turned down. That isn’t the case.

“People are speculating about Ched Evans. He’s a player that’s on the list but we haven’t made an offer for him.”

The newly-relegated Blades are desperate to offload Evans’s £15,000-a-week wages with the 22-year-old now understood not to have joined the rest of his team-mates on the club’s pre-season training camp in Malta.

Middlesbrough, Leicester and Cardiff have also been linked with the former Manchester City man, who joined the Blades for £3 million in the summer of 2009.

Jewell says he's confident that he'll get the additional players he's after before the season begins: "We know we need a couple of players and we're hopeful of that happening before the start of the season.

"We know the players we want. We're looking for two or three players and hopefully they will be here and ready to go for the Bristol game.

"We're looking at all areas of the pitch. We know we're still short and we're determined to get the players in we need."

Transfers arent the only thing the club spend money on so just because we're not spending loads doesnt mean Evans and clegg are doing wrong. I'd rather be spending the money wisely than wasting all our money and going into administration..its only a matter of time before many clubs start to do so.

actualy we do tend to sign a fare few over the hill nobody wants players.so on that score whoppit is right.however weve made some good signings chopra and cresswell, and on the whole whoppit is a pretty negative guy.

We need a modern day Frank Clarke/Ian Marshall/Alan Lee - none of them great players, but all made things happen in the box! Then we can be sure Chopra will get 20 goals, minimum!

Stern John was seen in Ipswich Town Centre by a number of people this morning. Hasn't got a house/flat here that I know of and is currently unattached. 34 years old though and doesn't make sense with the story "the blues have made an offer for another striker".
Kind of quality signing I would expect us to make at this point if we do.....I'd rather resign Kevin Lisbie if we get the oppotunity....

We NEED a CB, RB and creative MF'er !

Now to be honest I wouldn't mind Kenny Miller but I think he's destined for Cardiff to be honest. I still dont rule out Goodwillie evn with court cases hanging over him.
Sordell would be a good signing although see him more wider than straight down the middle. Will be watching closely Thursday!!!!

Sordell would be a solid acquisition, but for Gods sake just sign him then concentrate on 2 cbs and a rb asap. Delaney and Smith won't cut the mustard together this year. They looked terrible against Cambridge Utd.Kenny Miller looks Cardiff bound and I think John still has friends in Ipswich.
A new gk would be a good investment.

Interesting - so this is now the fourth choice option? Still, would be good to sign another striker, because apart from Chopra (excellent signing) - the others don't seem up to it. Scotland did okay yesterday - but perhaps not the answer.

Although I was all for signing a striker as a priority - after watching us last night, a CB and a RB has to really be an urgent. We are woefully weak at the back. Very worrying that Cambridge gave our only two fit CB's the run around, whilst Edwards was caught out of position onmore than one occasion.

Also agree with others, we need creativity in midfield. So much for PJ to do and only two and a half weeks to do it.

Watford are a better team than us, why would Sorv come and play for a relegation threatened club? Makes no sense. Boateng wouldn't sign for us, why should he?
Stern John is too young for us.

my guess is,35 or 36 year old on a free who wants a last pay-day.
We need fighters who are ready for a long and drawn out relegation battle. 4th from bottom would be a MIRACLE this season.

jas0009- agree about the need for creativity. We need 5 or 6 new players to be honest....
whippet/whoppit- don't agree with relegation battle- think we will get a solid mid-table this season (I know a lot of people will call me over-optimistic for saying that but I believe that wil be the case). To say we are top 6 material is like saying Norwich are top 6 material in the Premiership.....
We have a long way to go before we are anywhere near Notts F, Leicester, Blackpool, Derby, West Ham, Reading etc. However, I think we are better than Posh/Brighton/Bristol City etc.
We are rebuilding....Paul Jewell is doing his best.....

We have the worst central defensive partnership in the Championship. Enough said.

Hi Garv-
Yes, Derby. IMO they have made some decent signings over the Summer (Jason Shackell-best defender by miles at Barnsley, Chris Maguire- from Aberdeen-really tough and young front man who Rangers looked at- would both have been excellent signings for us). They have some very good existing players...think they will be top 8 this season.....

What makes me laugh about Whoppit when he moans about us signing 33 and 34 year olds...this is the man who said we should be signing 37 year old Kevin Phillips a few weeks ago....

Really we have the makings up front but it would be terrible to be losing 4-2 week after week.
Do we need a defensive coach? Who believes in robust height? Do we need a couple more defenders with a good system?

Yes we do.
