Clegg: Town Targeting Two
Clegg: Town Targeting Two
Tuesday, 2nd Aug 2011 12:20

Town chief executive Simon Clegg says the Blues are trying to complete the signings of two more players before Saturday’s season opener at Bristol City. The loan signing of Blackburn midfielder Keith Andrews is one of those deals, while the second is likely to be another central defender.

Speaking to Radio Suffolk, Clegg said: "We've got a couple of targets in mind. I don't want to box myself into a corner, but the season starts on Saturday so we're focused on trying to ensure any deals that are to be done are done before the start of the season."

The chief executive says that once the main transfer business is done and dusted, then the club will look at securing existing players whose current terms are up next June in a bid to avoid a repeat of this summer’s exits by the likes of David Norris and Gareth McAuley.

He said: “The focus at the moment is bringing in the new players that the manager wants. We’ve done a lot of business already, seven new signings this summer, some good signings as well, very positive signings and I think people are very upbeat, whether it’s Michael Chopra at the front or David Stockdale at the back coming in on loan. I’m very positive in terms of what we can do this season.

“Once we’ve effectively closed the book in terms of the majority of what we’re trying to do over this transfer window, then we’ll sit down and look very seriously in terms of people who are coming to the end of their contracts.”

Gary Warren - Newport County Captain and very good CB. Can get him for £100.000. Untested at this level but reckon he would be a good squad adition as we seem to be serioulsly lacking in this area.

Couple of young Liverpool CBs are cracking and may come down on loan - esp as ;
a) They want to buy another CB
b) Good Liverpool Connection !!

Mr Clegg, you and PJ are a class act with the signings you have made so far this season! Keep up the good work!

Keith Andrews would be a very good addition to the squad indeed and i agree with you brian_a_mul, Barker would be a very good signing and is worth a shout! Also blueherts has a very good point with Gavin Hoyte!

There are a few young players in the Prem like Daniel Ayala that could be worth a punt on a season long loan but don't see this as a long term goal but still worth a think!

I am very positive fpr this season but also a realist yes I think this is out year but I think we are going to have a quiet start 7 points from the first month then the team will be complete and together then we are going to be seeing a massive surge up the league my prediction is second or third last day waiting for the result oooohh I hate it but keeps the interest. In the MANAGEMENT we trust

I was quite hopeful when we were linked to Bobo Baldé last year. Not sure on where he is now, but at 35 may still have one more good year in him to push us up to the promised land....

Got a pal who is a Blackburn season ticket holder - quote "he's been very badly treated by the fans, given his limitations and association with Ince. Not his fault he was signed, and should never boo your own. Industrious, but not a premier league player"

O.K. Clegg has finally got his act together and I am pleasantly surpised to be eating some humb epie just now. Looks like Keane was our greatest adversary.

I was very despondent during the past two or three seasons when I kept reading that no quality players would choose to live in this part of the world. I started to believe that the possibility of being a great footballing force again one day were gone forever. My mood is lifting, thank you ITFC.

Credit where credit's due - Clegg has had a good summer and with PJ seemingly talking the talk who knows what exciting signings could make the're way to PR in the future

If we sign Andrews - what about a play-maker ?? - Andrews is a very good defensive player. Then again, PJ favours a negative formation so can only assume he will be looking to defend more than attack. Must still sign a CB and a RB.

Nosworthy for me..can cover the right-back & centre-back positions.

I'd rather have Tommy Smith than Nosworthy. I am afraid he has seen better days as Sheff U fans will tell you. Oh and Shittu signed a one year extension at QPR I believe.

Andrews would be a very good singing for me, and we can finally get rid of the over-rated leadbitter who in my opinion, has never been above a mediocre player.

A great deal of appreciation to all at Portman Road [ and this site ] for making the closed season a hell of a lot better [ expectations wise ], than the last couple of years.
