Jewell: Defeats Our Own Doing
Jewell: Defeats Our Own Doing
Monday, 28th Nov 2011 15:49

Blues boss Paul Jewell says that Town have been the architects of their own downfall in recent weeks having developed a tendency to concede goals from set pieces, something which they hadn’t been doing earlier in the season. The Liverpudlian says his side should have picked up six points in the last couple of games, a haul which would have left them far nearer the top of the division than their current lowly standing of 18th.

Jewell said: “You feel physically sick when you lose games at any time, but certainly in the last two weeks the way we’ve lost games is very difficult to take. We’ve lost them through our own doing really.

“We’ve conceded from set plays and yet we hadn’t conceded from a set play up until the Crystal Palace game. Since then we’ve conceded four or five, which is doubly disappointing, especially because of the lateness that the goals have been conceded.”

Having assessed the goals from the Reading game — striker Daryl Murphy having admitted culpability for the Royals' first equaliser — Jewell felt the problems were clear to see: “We watched the videos again yesterday and it’s basically people getting out-jumped at corners, it’s as simple as that.

“And also we have to be careful because we do give silly fouls away at times. We’ve got to cut that pettiness out of our game, which is costing us.”

Jewell believes his side need to have a greater solidity about them at Burnley on Tuesday: “We have to be resilient. We’ve lost five games on the bounce and no one’s going to give us anything. We’ve got good players in the squad, but it’s just not happening for us at the moment.

“We’ve still got a lot of time left in the season, we’ve got a lot of time to climb the table, but we’re also aware we’re at the wrong end of it, we’re not kidding ourselves.

“We’ve been so close in the last couple of games, it’s not as if we’ve been played off the park. We haven’t played well, we certainly didn’t play well on Saturday, but we could easily have had six points out of the last two games and everything would have been rosy.”

While the Blues were letting their late lead slip against Reading, Burnley were coming from behind to win their game against Hull City 3-2, a result which the Town boss feels will have given them a massive boost: “They came back from 2-0 down, scoring three late goals and they’ll be full of confidence now.

"This league is so topsy-turvy, if we’d have got six points out of the last two games, which we could easily have done, I think we’d be one point outside the top six with a game in hand.

“But ifs, buts and maybes are not what win you football matches, it’s actually doing it and I’m aware of that.”

The defeats PJ Are down to you and are old past it players.
I predict Jewell to walk if we lose another 2-3 games on the trot.

jas, only time I saw Ingimarson play I thought he was quite good. Much better than Delaney. Do you actually read anybody else's comments other than your own? You're not good at responding to what people have to say about yours...

We ought to let Jewell get on with it, I'd rather see him admitting it isn't good enough rather than hiding in his shell. That's all he's doing. Agree with j4ck, too many of you are too ready to find excuses to criticise.

With supporters like some of these posters - this Club is never going to be successful again.
I cannot believe how satisfied, even now after all the recent and ongoing rubbish - these people are.

LOSERS - on and off the pitch - it has to be said.

I doubt if some of you people have ever WON anything in your lives - or needed too. Maybe you don't even know the meaning of the word.

How can someone make such blatantly obvious statement ? - but then, should we be surprised after all we've seen and heard this season from him ? ..................

tomisamos - ????? - 'find excuses to criticise' ? - you certainly don't have to 'find' excuses - EVIDENCE smacks you in the face without looking.

No one of 'sane mind' can argue with that.

okay h32, firstly I'd rather half a glass half full and get behind the team than a glass half empty and boo them.

Secondly, I'm sure lots of people on this forum are very successful in their lives, just as you so proudly seem to be. That has no bearing on this. Stop going on about it as arrogantly as you do. Everyone wants to see the team win, no one is satisfied with losing. Maybe they just don't think sacking the manager will lead to instant success either. Who would you bring in? You'll give me a more sensible answer than jas hopefully.

Evidence speaking, Jewell has a higher win rate than any manager since Burley. Genuinely I'm as surprised as you about it and of course that doesn't mean we should believe Jewell is going in the right direction right now. I just think the more you hark on about evidence the more obvious it is that you're confusing it with opinion and perception. Had we beaten reading we'd be four points off of the play offs with a game in hand. If we beat burnley tomorrow we could potentially be as many points from relgation than promotion.

We're actually scoring goals, we have some classy players and with the confidence we could beat anyone in this league. West Ham thought we were the best team they'd seen at Upton Park this year. It's the same players and the same manager.

Jewell is admitting it is his fault and the teams and that they have their fate in their own hands. If he hid his head in the sand and said nothing you'd moan that he wasn't saing anything and was silent and didn't care. If he came out and said it wasn't the teams fault and they were doing well you'd moan that he was blind. He's come out and staed the obvious, and you moan about him. He could say literally anything and you'd find fault with it and don't pretend you wouldn't. That's what I was saying, now get your head out your backside.

Bryan Gunn was depending on loans and oldies and look what happened to him !
He was axed and all the loans went back and then they progressed !!!.
IT looks like Jewell has got to start rebuilding the team again, and then there will be the Gel rubbish again, and where will that leave us ????
I am sure when Marcus Evans said we want to get out of this league he did not mean the other way.
When Joe was here we were leaking goals, but we were putting in more the other end.

If my auntie had balls she´d be my uncle....stop with the obvious line Jewell and man these players up ,he is right in some of the things he said and i have never been one for sacking managers when they go through a difficult patch (maybe a massive understatement i know) but its still a long way from the fat lady singing.I dont have the answers but I want Jewell to get a fair crack of the whip and we can reevaluate around christmas.

things are far from ideal at portman road , thats for sure... But how can any sane person with any football knowledge, think for a second that replacing Jewell is the answer???? I am far from happy with the rubbish being served up at the moment as we all are.. But we are only just past 1/3 of the season, i am glad Sir Bobby was given the support of his employers(i am not suggesting for a sec that Jewell is in Sir Bobbys league) and more than 17 games, because loads of idiot supporters wanted him out as well, i am old enough to remember it as well..
Patience will eventually disappear ( i know mine will, but it aint happened yet) its his team and he is being paid to sort it out, lets give him the chance to do it , i am glad when i started my new job i was given the time to prove i had the ability that i claimed i had in the interview, patience was shown to me in abundance and i think now they are getting the person i said i was.. My final point is this , its great to have differing opinions, it creates debate and we should enjoy debating, But can we all try to agree on one thing, 'WE ARE ITFC SUPPORTERS' so those who arent supporters, and there are many on here, please stay away.. you know who you..... see you all at portman road on sat, for another 3 points on top of the three we get tomorrow...COYB

for a site for town fans, there appears to be more hatred towards the team then pushing on and supporting the town.we,re playing woeful and are on a bad run at the moment, all it will take is for the team to sort itself out, be positive and head on to were we all want to be.none of us want to be like we are right now and none of us want to be relegated but what we should all do is get behind our team 100%,things dont always go to plan but if we try and sort it out then maybe we'll succeed.

jas0999 "WORSE than Roy and Jim combined". You have made a solid case against Jewell to that point but then come out with a ridiculous assertion like that. You have made your point over & over but come on now lay your cards on the table with a realistic short-list of new managers to replace him and let's have a debate about that. Until I see some decent names on that list WHO WE CAN REALISTICALLY ATTRACT I cannot agree with sacking a manager at this stage. Apart from about 3 managers in the history of the game, every manager does well at some point & crap at other times. How do you know what the available shortlist was when they employed Jewell & how do you know if someone else on that list could have done any better than him to this point? We could be having the same pointless debate now about some other manager! We can all air our frustrations here but for some on here to be so EMPHATIC that they know better without full knowledge of the facts that come with running a football club makes me laugh!

I have got to say we have not played well since that ruddy first international break. So what happened in that first 2 weeks off is anybodys guess.
Tell me are the players playing for Jewell ?????????

One thing the defeat on sat proved to me was it was not the formation but the team/players/tactics to lose again like that is whats wrong.
