Jewell: We Were Like a Pub Team Wednesday, 30th Nov 2011 07:37
Manager Paul Jewell said his Blues side were no better than a pub team after their 4-0 defeat to Burnley. The Liverpudlian believes that on current form Town’s highly-paid squad including a number of experienced Premier League campaigners wouldn’t get into many teams in the Championship.
A seething Jewell said: “Anyone who was watching that [match] would have thought we were a pub team really.
“There are a lot of big reputations out there and people look at the teamsheets and say there are a lot of good names in there, but I don’t see many of them getting in anyone else’s team at the moment. It’s just unbelievable that performance.“
The Blues boss feels there are a lack of on-field leaders at present: “We can talk about leaders and this and that, we haven’t got any, I don’t see any.
"As soon as a goal goes in or something goes against us, there’s not enough of them, or any of them really, trying to get back into the game.”
Jewell is clearly honoured to be leading the Blues but doesn't think all his players feel the same way: “This is Ipswich Town. I’m proud as punch to be manager of Ipswich Town but I think some of them think it’s just another game.”
Meanwhile, defender Ibrahima Sonko, an unused sub at Burnley, thanked fans for making the lengthy trip: “Hope all the all ITFC fans got home safely. It’s been a very long disappointing night. We all hurt. Thank you again for coming such a long way.”

The thing is a pub team would get stuck in and have more than 2 shots. The players need to look at themselves. Dont deserve to be earning £15000 a year, let alone per week.

Its times like this that I feel embarassed to be a town supporter. Not because of the result.. (although that is poor and this run needs to stop)... but because nobody ever gets behind the manager. Yes he is the 'manager' and ultimately it is his responsibilty to get results on the field, but sacking him is not what this club needs. He is a good proven manager at this level and I believe that given time to build the squad (at least two years) we will turn into a good quality, promotion-challenging side. He has made some good signings in Cresswell, Chopra, Sonko, Bullard, Collins etc and is always honest about how we play. Lets get behind him rather than calling for a managers head every time we go on a poor run of form.

I don't think you are giving enough credit to the players. Clearly they went on strike early ahead of today's day of action, in support of those public servant employees who are trying to protect their jons and pensions. Employees, some of which struggle to earn a year, what they get in a day. One would hope that the players are embarrassed enouigh to donate last nights wages to a deserving charity, but as Jewell points out, most of them don't give a sh*t.

Just registered on here as I wish to comment on ITFC predicament. I live in South Wales Brecon so do not go to any matches basically an armchair supporter, just wanted to say to all those following fans that go to matches week in week out how I feel for you as to what is happening to Ipswich Town at the moment. This is a great club and deserves to be great again but I feel with Paul Jewel at the helm it's more like Titanic Town as the way the team are going and are being led it's sinking fast. Paul Jewel said the other day " we are in a dark place " seems like they and he are totally blind at the moment with nowhere to go. I think it is time for him to go, seems to have no idea of team formation or how to get the so called players to to gel. The head honchos @ Town need to bite the bullet and say enough is enough lets get some one else in, even if it means we go down a league at least it shows they are not happy with what's happening and are willing to try and do something about this total shambles at the moment.

Hang on ..pub teams get up early on a sunday, usually with a stinking hangover, have to play in some dog sh*t infested park watched by one man and his dog.....but they give their ALL when they play, they shout they scream they want to win!...it seems that our beloved ITFC players dont care anymore! .....and these are Jewells players...time is running out for him.....

One of the most shocking things was how we made Stanislas and McCann look like Jairzinho and Tostao. These are two Burnley players who have been slated week in, week out by their supporters for their poor form and ability.

Very upsetting and deeply worrying about when and if this awful run will end! Jewell has made mistakes, but I feel sorry for him really as he is a workaholic and if trying his best for Ipswich. Experienced players are just not performing, and how on earth are the likes of Bowyer (Premier League regular and Carling Cup winner last year), Bullard (hero here last season) and Chopra ("guaranteed to score goals" people always say, except for us) just so woeful. Andrews and Collins might as well be sent back, as they are part of the failing team so why should be splash out more big money on them? Please let's look to younger players in Leagues One and Two, and overseas. If Jewell does lose his job, my big worry is that whoever comes in to replace him will struggle to improve us if they are restricted to loan signings and free transfers. We just haven't replaced McAuley, Norris and Wickham (and even with them the Ipswich team was hardly brilliant!).

JEWELL, DIAMOND AND GEMS ?? Not working ??? so it looks like Marcus Evans might have to buy all 3 out, I do not know who to replace Jewell with ???? But if nothing is done the fans will diminish fast 15000 sat ??????

I hate to see managers sacked, but the time is getting close for PJ. most of the players were his signings and apart from Cresswell and JET none have long term future at this club. We are clueless defending free kicks because we have no height in the team, apart from poor old Sonko who is so injury prone. The only man to get pride back in this club is Tony Mowbray, the way has moved Middlesbourgh on with no money has been great, if he had been given a chance when George Burley was sacked our recent history could have been a better.

Unfortunately we are still seeing the effects of the RK era. How many captains did he help leave agongst countless others?? Walters, Norris, McAuley. I feel sorry for PJ, I really do. He came in firefighting and the situation he inherited with the contracts was scandalous. He did well to bulk up the squad in most areas with loans, frees + a few transfers in a short space of time. The players need to stand up and be counted and show they are commited to the club and the supporters.

Agree with most comments, the so called "stars" don`t care about ITFC,all they think about is their wage packet. Our club has more history than a lot of Premiership clubs (Alf Ramsey,Bobby Robson, success in Europe, winning the FA Cup and the League Championship) so it should be a privilege to play for us and help build us into a Premiership side again but on recent performances there is no commitment and no desire.

no Matteo i said i give a balanced view and dont pick on all and sundary to slag off like some. yesterday was poor and i am first to admit it. however i did not get on the ALB is crap band wagon and in fact he proved all those wrong. I also dont fully blame PJ, i can see his plan it just isnt coming off and i think the players need to look very closely at themselves

I was there last night and it was embarrassing. I heard two Burnley fans talking as I walked away from the ground and one said to the other "that was better" the other replied "I wouldn't get carried away, they were shocking". When Jewell took the job made great play of the fact that ME had assured him that it was a long term project. Given that security why has he loaded the team with over 30s and loan players? How is that a long term strategy? Young and hungry players for whom Ipswich is a great opportunity are the answer, not crocked has beens looking for a last pay day. The big problem last night was that the old players were all happy to have the ball but nobody was willing to run, tackle, move, make space or do anything that involved any effort. A couple of old heads can be a great assett, but a team full of them is a disaster.

Although all is very doom and gloom at the moment so called fans staying away and calling for others to do so is sh1te and will only hurt the club and team more . Norwich, Saints and Leeds went down with bigger support not dwindling moaners and all have risen back alot stronger with sell out crowds . Get behind your team , manager and players until results or something changes and then continue to do the same

I honestly think we should of kept Mcauley & Norris they wanted to play for the team more than the idiots we have here now. We actually had a good defensive partnership with Mcauley & Delaney so that says it all. I think we should make 2 bids for Rhodes & trotter in Jan & get rid of bowyer, Ellington, ingimarrson & Collins & Andrews won't sign anyway. If Bullard doesn't pick his game up get him off our wage bill too. Then I would just work with the rest of the squad giving the younger players a chance I.e hyam, Murray, Carson etc. I think if we loose against Watford that could be jewels last game. Bring burley till the end of the season and holland as his num 2. You know it makes sense mr Evans blue is in their blood :-)

It's that rare thing called a perfect storm. We've all had enough and nobody cares what happens anymore. The owner, the CEO, the manager, the players and the fans. We've all had enough. Turn the lights off and goodnight.

Planetblue, it's not that easy just to get players off the wage bill. The only way to do it is: A: Sell them, but with the performances many of them have displayed this season who would want to buy them? B:Loan out, with the team taking them picking up most, if not all of their wages, but the above applies here also C: Terminate contract, but that only gets rid of the player, not the wages as you would have to continue to pay them for the duration of their contract either as a lump sum or regular payments (unless they'd accept a mutual termination of contract with a lower settlement figure) And Burley hasn't done anything since he was sacked from here in '02 so I definitely wouldn't want him back.

The fan base has been split and this makes us no better than the team . Everyone should go this saturday , make loads of noise not moans , get behind the team and players big time. Then if our so called team still cannot be bothered to make an effort then we will not attend the Derby game. Send all loanees back , get Clegg to tell us the truth on where we stand there is a shareholders meeting on monday night we must then take that opportunity to voice a stronger opinion.

Jewell must take full resposibility for this fiasco. He had the summer to find the right players to build a team but went for over 30s instead of the future. His first priority was central defence but he never replaced hte excellent McAuley. Then he signed midfielders well past their best with the result that last night the total years of the four were 130+ and came second best to a isde that hasnt played well for weeks. We've been losing to the worst sides in the division and PJ doesnt seem to have grasped that the diamond isnt working especially with the four slowest central midfielders in the squad. Why sign Wabara if we dont use him. Carlos should never have been put at rb but used as part of a wider midfield with either Martin or Carson on the left. As for our strikers, we have no height and no pace apart from Chopra. Buit then with such a poor support from midfield is it any wonder that we cant score or when we do the defence let in more! I'd let Andrews Collins Ivar Kennedy Bowyer Murphy go and replace with younger fitter replacements. I fTown go down then so be it, but we mast build for future as watching crap week in week out is too painful

I think the best players we seem to get all come through our youth academy. Bent, Wickham, R Wright etc.... . We have never been good at buying players, or actually seeing potential in players. I remember when we had that leftback Izzaguire on trial. Played a few friendly games then went to Celtic! Shortly after he was touted as one of the best leftbacks in the world and Arsenal wanted to sign him! And Le Fondre. Constantly scoring at lower leagues for the past 4-5 years, why didnt we bid for him in the summer? Went to Reading for £250k. Academy Big Paul, thats where the Jewells are! (Sorry lol) team at the weekend....... ALB Edwards Sonko Collins Cresswell Carson Kennedy Lawrence Martin Murphy Scotland Subs: Cropper Bullard JET Chopra Ingy

Thing is I hear his interview and I genuinely believe he is proud to be the manager our great football club and that he is hurting due the players fancying a few weeks off coz they dont get paid enough! The only thing is the players in that team are the ones he bought and if they dont wanna play for him then something has gotta change, but you cant change 7/8 players though, aaaaaaaah so frustrating! Gotta win against Watford!
