Jewell: We Were Like a Pub Team
Jewell: We Were Like a Pub Team
Wednesday, 30th Nov 2011 07:37

Manager Paul Jewell said his Blues side were no better than a pub team after their 4-0 defeat to Burnley. The Liverpudlian believes that on current form Town’s highly-paid squad including a number of experienced Premier League campaigners wouldn’t get into many teams in the Championship.

A seething Jewell said: “Anyone who was watching that [match] would have thought we were a pub team really.

“There are a lot of big reputations out there and people look at the teamsheets and say there are a lot of good names in there, but I don’t see many of them getting in anyone else’s team at the moment. It’s just unbelievable that performance.“

The Blues boss feels there are a lack of on-field leaders at present: “We can talk about leaders and this and that, we haven’t got any, I don’t see any.

"As soon as a goal goes in or something goes against us, there’s not enough of them, or any of them really, trying to get back into the game.”

Jewell is clearly honoured to be leading the Blues but doesn't think all his players feel the same way: “This is Ipswich Town. I’m proud as punch to be manager of Ipswich Town but I think some of them think it’s just another game.”

Meanwhile, defender Ibrahima Sonko, an unused sub at Burnley, thanked fans for making the lengthy trip: “Hope all the all ITFC fans got home safely. It’s been a very long disappointing night. We all hurt. Thank you again for coming such a long way.”

mark1969 "Everyone should go this saturday , make loads of noise not moans , get behind the team and players big time"

Funniest thing on this forum! The only time theres a noise is when the ref makes a bad decision! When we do score its quiet 30 seconds later.

'Funny' as it apparently is, I think we ought to do as mark1969 says. Might possibly enjoy ourselves more if we're singing...

As for Jewell, I'd honestly rather see him sacked for getting us actually relegated and then completely start again the way Norwich have done. I really don't want to go through the same process of sacking a manager because we might go down with over half the season to play. Just look at how tight the table is. If we scrap a couple of wins and a draw next month it'll probably look completely different again. It's not impossible.

I played in some pub teams that were better than this lot. And I had pride in the famous green and black stripes and the badge.

And rather than getting paid 20k a week, I had to fork out £3 in subs!

I'll be at PR on Saturday, because I'm Ipswich till I die, no matter how much it hurts.

Agreed with some of the comments here about signing players, yes we've signed some good ones but we've picked up some absolute dross too, Paz, George, La Pen, and so on.
And when do we ever sign anybody who we've known to have had at the club on trial?
But it goes back years, even the Great Sir Bobby let a young Gazza slip through apparently telling him he'd never make it as a footballer!

PJ - Tell me, on saturday how many of your pub team players will still be in the team despite their performances.

PJ - tell me what formation you are going to play because if I see a diamond I will walk straight back out of the ground.

PJ - You said we had to look at NCFC as an example, you said no massive changes, you are saying things and doing the opposite. You are turning into RK.

PJ - Please give us a backs to the wall 0-0 draw with Watford, because I have given up hoping for anything more. That is how high my expectations are at the moment. I will even take a 1-0 defeat, but not another thrashing, or abject performance.

Bluelady is right we mixed it up with younger players and played 442, I think both JET and Carson have bags of quality and potential but it didn't seem to change anything by the looks of things. I can't see how any alterations to the squad will change the results on the pitch with the current squad which makes me worried because we need points before christmas. This January is gonna be crucial.

Cant believe people still blaming Keane
This was Jewells team apart from Scotland (only player who seemed to give a damn) Kennedy and Edwards.
Face facts, he is out of his depth and should go now. He has brought in has beens who donrt care and loaned/released/pi$$ed off all our future first teamers and is now reaping those benefits.
Good riddance to you PJ

don't hate me for saying this, but maybe relegation isn't such a bad idea...look at the teams who got promoted from league one...norwich won league one and then got promoted to the premier league in consecutive seasons, leeds didn't do too badly last season either. Southampton got prmoted last season and now top the Championship, Brighton have a had a slip in form but aren't doing too badly either...maybe we need to get relegated...start from scratch, get some momentum, hopefully get promoted again and then see where that momentum takes us...

Hello all.
I would just like add a suggestion 4-4-2 not working at present 4-5-1 never worked how about a 3-5-2 formation? Team (if fit) Stockdale- back three of Sonko, Collins & Kennedy(middle of the 3 sweeping), wing backs of Cresswell & Edwards having a back 3 and middle 3 it allows them to push forward with more cover. Middle 3 of Andrews, Bowyer more forward with Luke Hyam (remember him, rated by by RK) sittingin front of centre halfs, up front Scotland & Chopra. This i feel will get the town back on track, it allows Carlos and Aaron cover when defending which has happened of late, and them to use there strengths of going foward, hopefully providing service for the forwards and midfielders of Andrews & Bowyer. Kennedy sweeping- reads the game well and distribution more suited for that position. Luke Hyam protecting the back three, this young man introduced by Mr Keane was as good as any of the others that have played in that position since he was discilplined and feared no-one.

Any thoughts?

I dont recall a worse performance, sat there in stunned silence with arms folded for the last 65mins once realising there was no chance of us scoring. Leadbitter gets some stick but Bullard has been atrocious,Andrews anonymous and Bowyer is just making up the numbers,Cresswell after a bright start looks a division above his ability, the ease at which he is skinned(2nd goal) is alarming and jet and Carson dont appear to be adequate replacements. While the abuse is targeted at Pj at no time has he said"go out there and be crap lads",if he gets it wrong tactically then fine but all i see are a group of players who are unable to do the basics at present so my finger of blame is pointed firmly at them. The men amongst them will own up to this. None of us hav got a clue wot we are on about but if player A cant pass to player B I fail to see how it can be the managers fault.

How odd, the second manager in a row who likes to publicly slate his players, yes HIS players. Can you imagine Sir Bobby, Burley, BFJ or John Lyall resorting to such things. How on earth can that breed confidence in players who quite clearly have none?
0

bobble added 20:23 - Nov 30
we could always play 10 defenders like keane and go for the 0-0 draws for the rest of the year while releasing press reports saying the owners stands by the manager even though the crowds have dropped to 7 people including the tea lady

Ever decreasing circles.Manager buys players, picks team and tactics, team play badly, manager slates team, team confidence starts to fade, manager picks team and decides tactics, team play badly, manager slates team.....and so it goes on.
Yes the players need to stand up and be counted but the constant team changing ,obvious tactical flaws, clear lack of motivation and failure to build from the back is totally down to the manager.
Therefore PJ start taking the responsibility for YOUR errors, after all this is YOUR pub team.Stop slagging the the players in the media, sort the defence out,get the tactics right and start motivating this squad after all we do have number of quality players. After all isn't this the managers job?
If you not up to it then do the club a favour and move on.

If we are a pub team - is the landlord PJ ?

Honestly, this guy has not got a clue - this is his team, his signings and he gets paid a fortune to manage this bunch of losers.

He does not know what formation to play or what his best side is !

PJ out before Xmas - he can then join a panto - because at the moment he is one big joke !
