Jewell: No Complaints About Effort
Jewell: No Complaints About Effort
Monday, 5th Dec 2011 08:38

Blues boss Paul Jewell had no complaints about his players’ effort despite losing 2-1 to Watford at Portman Road on Saturday, their seventh successive defeat. After the previous loss, a 4-0 capitulation at Burnley, he had compared his side to a “pub team”.

Jewell said: “I think the players owe it to themselves and to the supporters to give it all they’ve got and I’ve got no complaints about anybody’s effort.

“I thought on Tuesday we were very, very poor, but against Watford I thought we gave everything we had and were very, very unlucky. I think that was the difference.

“I thought we were compact and I thought we did enough to win the game, but we didn’t, which is the bottom line.

“But there were a lot more positives to take out of the game than there were on Tuesday, but at the end of the day we’ve still got no points.”

He says there were a few jitters after Watford’s first goal, something he feels always happens during a losing run: “It’s always going to be that way when you’ve lost six on the bounce but I thought [after the first Watford goal] there was a positive reaction throughout the ground.

“The players were disappointed to concede the goal, but I don’t think we went into our shells. They gave everything they had and any other day they would have won that game.”

Jewell felt the Blues kept going after conceding the goals, which hadn't been the case in midweek: “I think we knocked in their door, we had shots off the line, we had balls going into the box. How a couple of those haven’t gone in I don’t know. But that’s what happens.

“We’ve had corners and shots going in and crosses going in, and fair play to them they defended them well, but nothing seems to drop for us in the box.”

Despite their seventh defeat on the trot, the players were applauded off at the end with Jewell feeling fans saw the match in much the same way he did: “I think the supporters aren’t silly.

“They’re disappointed but they know the players were giving everything they had today and but for a little bit of luck or a bounce of the ball we would have won the game.”

The Town manager had praise for returning winger Lee Martin even though he made an error for the second goal: “I thought Lee did well, he was involved in their second goal, but that’s what happens when it’s not going your way and they’re not going our way at the moment.

“I’ve never really blamed luck and said we were unlucky but I thought today we were blatantly unlucky not to have won the game.”

Blues goalscorer Keith Andrews says the players are firmly behind their boss: “We back the manager 100 per cent.

“It’s a transitional period," he continued. "But you can see from that performance we back the manager.”

Watford boss Sean Dyche says he’s not in a position to tell his Town counterpart how to end the losing streak, despite turning things around at Vicarage Road after a disappointing start to the campaign: “Paul Jewell will have his own way of doing things, his record is good, so it’s not for me to start telling him what he needs to do.”

He also had no explanation for Watford’s extraordinary record against the Blues, Saturday’s game was Town's 14th without a win against the Hornets: “You can never quite find the scientific equation for why it that happens with some clubs. I don’t think that was the case today.

“We knew it was a really tough game today, an awkward one because Ipswich are waiting to beat someone. Every run comes to an end.

“Ours was against Peterborough in a topsy-turvy end-to-end game in which we nicked it 3-2. That’s what stopped our [losing run] and started a [better] one. Paul will be looking to stop that run and start another one as we did.”

Meanwhile, the AGM of the PLC which owns 12.5% of the club will be held in the Sir Bobby Robson Suite at Portman Road this evening.

I'm actually gonna calm down a tad (any body seeing my more recent posts will understand) The performance on saturday was much improved and thats agreed by everybody on here, on the radio ,in the press everybody.Thats a plus.So watford had a bit more of the ball than us ,sorry thats the way it goes some times and it can go the other way as well, anybody remember the portsmouth game last season. So thats not really an indicator of anything much.In another story on this sight Andrews our captain has spoken out only to be sneered at and derided by the same people who moaned when senior players are saying nothing.YES i've been negative but when it's obvious no changes are gonna be made suck it up,sure pout and stomp your feet but we (and I included myself in this) we have to support the 11 guys on the pitch 100%, we don't have to like the manager we might even want him drummed out of the club but the guys on the pitch are playing for us and while they not had the results or performances lately the improvement on saturday must be seen as a ray of hope.Andrews should keep the armband when leadbitter comes back, there's more chance of him staying past january than G.L

The way I see it is this: Last season we accepted a settling in period the first part of this season we accepted new players taking time to gel, our expectations therefore, where high and we perceived that some of the players signed were going to be goal goldmines i.e. Chopra and Jet etc...

PJ has been thinking through various formations but stuck with the noe infamous Diamond formation and had two or three games where the Diamond formation worked but alas was flawed we were exposed on our flanks and our defence was shod 3/4 of the game through due to the hevey workload and became devorced from the rest of the team ...it doesnt need me to outline this any further see Peterbrough see Southampton etc... an 442 Vs Diamond is what's been going on with PJ his idea was to bring something a little more daring ie midfield swarming the defence when attackking and mustering in defence when under the kosh on paper it actually looks really doable and I am sure in training PJ beleived the players would get it eventually well they didnt and still dont alongside this Back room squabbles with players coments like if you want to go ....go just dont cut the mustard and does nothing to promote unity within the team when players are lambasred like Priskin being humiliated to the press etc etc.. gives one the impression that PJ is "swaggering" with all his effort to afirm his the boss but little effect on the pitch let alone the players so we have to ask is PJ still finding his feet still or is he "swaggering" around Portman road knowing that the board support him an there's nothing anyone can do about it...

Well if his half the Manager I think he is he will now be really digging deep to come up with a new strategy but the thing is this PJ needs to install belief the players are in fact all good enough and well qualified for the job... enough to take us up to the Premiership PJ can turn this around I believe but forget any three game turn around "Hollywood blockbuster style performances" this season.

I would say Paul needs some room for change he needs time now to look at the squads talents and to place the challace into there hands and allow them to deliver for him how?...he needs to be seen kicking and ranting and making it clear that this is not going to be the normplayers want to shine but they also want to know what is expected of them so instead of this stoic ill take it on the chin attitude PJ is content to allow he needs to understand that its not his place to take bad performances and it is certainly not his place to make whinging comments from the sidelines to the press....
Great Managers like Sir Bobby on occasion had a good rant and rallying cries to go back into the breach and pluck victory from the jaws of defeat that's what its all about....... chuck on the youngsters like Carson have a go give and give them the belief get Chopra in an out and out forward poaching position not wing attack for goodness sake and bring Scotland in to feed and or to mop up any loose ricochet balls and lets have a midfield straifing the goal with long shots running attack was as Sir Bobby would have said is the best form of defence running in to really scare the opposing defence lets get creative and move as a unit make them come to us lets keep the ball when we want it slow it down speed it up dictate the game those are all of course old clichés but they are what made Ipswich Town circa Sir Bobby Robson,Mick Mills Eric Gates,Paul Mariner etc etc..(sorry no offence not enough room to include all the greatest names of this time) be the team they were nothings changed except the wages Bobby used to get the defence to train on there own to practice movement pieces and formation changes and again belief that they are a unit that they can rely on when you have the back bone you can flesh it out with the midfield joining in the ranks of defence and so on.....remember Sir Bobby Robson was booed at first it does take time I am like any other Ipswich town supporter I "hate ''to see Ipswich like this..... Paul new script new belief new tactics as mentioned even if it takes 541 style football we need wins thats all that counts right now and new Sermon to our players belief belief belief this is your chance and this is it right now!!!!

Bring in Socrates. He'd still be better even now than any of our midfielders.

I am like everyone else not happy with the present situation at Portman road and Paul Jewell could have made better signings last summer.
But saying that i do feel sorry for Paul. Roy Keane in his short time at PR completely ruined this club by getting rid of players who loved this club and never wanted to leave and are all doing well at other clubs.
Jordan Rhodes, Liam Trotter, Jon Walters, David Wright, Owen Garvan, Danny Haynes, Jon Stead, it was also not Paul Jewells fault that David Norris and Gareth MaAuley were free to speak to other clubs we he arrived.
Look at the what Keane left us with Priskin and a few of his ex Sunderland players.
If Paul Jewell had taken over after Jim he would have at least had a good base to start from with some good young players.
I hope we win at Barnsley but our next home game is Derby which might be a lucky sign as two years ago we beat them for our first win of the season after fifteen attempts under Keane.

So this is the state of our beloved Ipswich Town FC,sounds to me like many of you accept we are simply 2nd best in every game now.
We need changes from the top down, the club is in no better position than we were in when we slipped out of the Premier League nearly ten years ago,its simple, we have money but a clueless owner/funder with a hopeless chief exec who if he was working for me,he would have exited the same time keane went, why is it like in most Businesses the 'Upper' Management always seem to have a cloak of protection around them?,and it doesnt help anyone, clueless board equals clueless football club & decisions based upon that.
For gods sake lets rebuild our academy now and get some quality youngsters coming through again,Id have Sheepshanks & Burley back any day,the players dont give a hoot, attendances slipping shockingly, its only going one way until changes are made further up,cant see it improving at all until then.

got to agree...if we gave everything and still lost to a struggling side then PJ should be a man and admit he got it wrong.....

Winning doesn't seem to matter at all to some people now - interest, desire, effort, etc; are the all important words that now measure success.

WE MUST HAVE SOME OF THE MOST EASILY SATISFIED SUPPORTERS IN THE LAND.

Come the end of the season you will realise the only reward of points is for WINNING or not LOSING - BY WHICH TIME IT WILL BE TOO LATE.

But then again some of you will still be happy I'm sure.

Have to agree h32. I don't think the league give out points for effort!

At this moment no one is saying what progress is being made under PJ as there is none.

Does not play the youngsters we do have and it takes a loan player who probably won't be here in the new year to beg Evans not to sack him.

Given we are on tv on Saturday and the Evans name in full sight, am sure that if again we don't turn up and concede 3 or more then that will be curtains.

Interesting to see that Davies at barnsley and le fondre at reading who are 2 players mentioned on here in the summer are doing well. If PJ hasn't learnt how to create a competitive team over 11 months when we have let in so many goals, what evidence is there that he will turn it around with his youthful team!

h32 - I don't believe that anyone who supports 'Town is happy with the current situation. What worries many is that we turn into a club that changes manager every season or two and does not give then enough time.

I know it's painful (I pay for 2 season tickets mate) - but if PJ were to be sacked, what would happen next? And please don't tell me that nobodyy could be worse - 'cos people said that about RK and are now moaning about PJ....

h32 - agree, now we're continually losing we'll now look at another aspect how much passion and effort the players are putting in. Right we still lost at home to the mighty Watford - I had a fiver on Ipswich to win 2-1, if we were going to break a losing streak it would be against a very average team like them, no we couldn't do it!! - It made me laugh when I saw a couple of posts last week reckoning that there was some sort of betting scam going on (that really is clutching at giant straws) - if so I reckon the whole squad must be on it other than maybe the goalkeeper or a few defenders. My god.

Effort does count.

A special mention shoud be given to Lee Martin, who ran his socks off on Saturday and very nearly scored a great goal.

"we have money but a clueless owner/funder with a hopeless chief exec "

We DON'T have money, that IS the problem.

That is why we are now nearly £70m in debt, why after the sale of Walters for £3m we could only afford non league Drury, why Wickham had to be sold and PJ could only afford to bring in other clus cast offs and has beens, with the squad patched up with loanees. Why when we looked like we were going to be short of a 1st choice goalkeeper when could only afford the injury prone Plug. Someone not even wanted by 3rd tier Sheff Utd.

Take a look at how many have walked away from the club because we could not afford their wages, and who still will walk away. Look how many are out of contract come next June. Or maybe the falling attendances and the drop in season tickets to around 13,000 - and you say we have money ! I would wager Greece is thanking itself it's not in our shoes (their debt is about one and a half times it annual incomer. Ours is four times our annual income).

I believe the lack of money is a symptom of lack of interest from Marcus Evans. There is little or no communication from him or his idiot CEO Clegg. We are drifting, with what loks like a 'let them get on with it' attitude from the top. There is no urgency, no sense that the club is any importance to anyone. Save the long suffering fans. Whether we are eventually relegated( I don't think we will be) or not, please lets at least recognise what has lead us to this sorry state. A dramatic cost cutting exercise and a virtually complete LACK of money

MrCool - the 'moaning' you mention reference PJ IS justified - it takes a pretty poor Manager/Team to lose 7 consecutive matches - at any level of the game.

Of course, before someone points it out on here, it has happened before and no doubt will again. But that sequence of results, for us or anyone, is DIRE.
Really - DIRE.

No one can justifiably make excuses for that - however desperate some people are to find some.

I bought my son his first season ticket this year and now I fear that this will be his last. Before the the game he said to me " dad I don't want to go because we will only lose" . This really hurts he tells his friends at school that he supports arsenal so they don't pick on him. So to save my sons hope in football and for all of us who go to the games . SORT IT OUT NOW before it too late.

It's all gone wrong I really don't know how itfc will get out of this mess.
The club has let the fans down big time, they keep giving us high hopes and it just gets worse whoever the manager.
Mr Evans has give the last 3 managers a good lump Sum of money to spend on players. It has just back fired Everytime - something isn't right at this football club and it has been like this for a good 5 years. They have to hurry up and sort it out or we will be going down.

Oh dear

non league Drury, aged freebies and loanees costing how much

certainly not the money from Walters, nevermind Wickham

Mr Evans has taken a good lump sum of money from the club, grasp that and all the rest falls into place

Aah! Well thank god we had more corners and put a little more effort in! This makes the 6 hour round trip to PR from the south coast and the amount it costs me well worthwhile. The reason attendances are down is because people like me aren't prepared to do it until PR stops feeling like Mordor...so someone has to grab Jewell's ring - errr, I think this analogy has stopped working but you know what I mean. Who will rid me of this turbulent Jewell??

paulm3paw - a valid point - I started taking my 6 year old grandson this season 'at his request - not coerced'' and he was well keen, always wanting something from the Club Shop. Not easy to entice him now tho' as 'we never win' - his words.

Seen as pointless facts by some no doubt - but these are /could be the future support of the Club. Just highlights the full scale of potential effect the situation has.
