St Ledger Deal Could Still Happen
St Ledger Deal Could Still Happen
Saturday, 14th Jan 2012 10:12

Blues boss Paul Jewell hasn’t ruled out Sean St Ledger joining Town later in the month, despite Leicester calling off his loan-with-a-view-to-a-permanent-switch earlier in the week. The Liverpudlian is, however, looking at other targets in various positions.

Jewell says the Foxes called off the move due to Sol Bamba being away from the club and not as St Ledger is required for the FA Cup replay against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday which was initially cited as the reason the deal was halted: “When we spoke to Leicester on Thursday, the feedback was that it wasn’t so much the cup replay, which was what I was led to believe on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, but the fact that Bamba’s gone to the African Nations Cup and one of the centre-halves has got an injury. They need to bring somebody in before they can consider letting anybody go.

“I think there was probably a mix-up between the chief executive and manager and the coaching staff. I understand that if they want to bring a player in, they don’t want to leave themselves short.”

He says the St Ledger himself was keen on making the move having fallen out with Leicester boss Nigel Pearson due to his lack of games since his summer switch from Preston: “I spoke to Sean on Monday night after the owner had spoken to his agent and I don’t think there was a problem there.

“His agent told me he wanted to come. It didn’t happen, or hasn’t happened yet. It might happen, it might not.”

The Blues manager says that while he could continue his pursuit of the 27-year-old, he has other targets: “He’s a player that I’ve always liked, but there are other players on the radar in other positions as well.

“We are pursuing other players in all positions because we, and everybody else knows, we need to improve the team. We’ve got a few injuries at the moment, but we need to improve the team.

“The squad needs to be improved but I can’t really put a number on the players I want, we need players in all positions.

Jewell, who expects to usual late flurry of transfer window deals throughout football, part of the reason he dislikes the current system, wasn’t thinking about additions at yesterday’s press conference, his mind firmly fixed on getting three points against Blackpool: “The most important thing for me now is the game tomorrow.

“After the match we’ll then have to start looking forward to Leeds and trying to bring players in. At this late stage on a Friday afternoon there’s only one thing on my mind really.”

One player he says he’s not after is Crawley’s Matt Tubbs, linked by a tabloid earlier in the week: “I don’t know where that’s come from. We’ve been at a lot of Crawley games because we watched Andy Drury while he was there. I’m not saying he’s not a good player but he’s not one that we’ve enquired about.”

It won't happen, we should just withdraw our interest completely rather than having clubs dictate to us. Move on to other targets. We must get permanent deals, after all we keep hearing about "the 5 year plan", more loan signings would contradict this statement yet again.

Is it only Ipswich who get drawn into sagas like this? We had it with Nugent and Jeffers, plus others I'm sure. Just move on and find someone better, please.

another week and still no signings, also not much speculation about targets either.
there will be a flurry in the last week with us losing a couple of more games and then being told "i dont like this transfer window as there is not much about and no value for money but the loan window opens again so we have a couple of targets that we are looking at and hope to do something then"

Players are the one's in control. If Sean had wanted to come to Ipswich he would have thrown his toys out of the pram and would have signed last week.

Can't PJ take a hint? He isn't coming. Try someone who want to sign.

Dodged a bullet there, there is better out there.
In this case a loan would be good as it would help till we found better in the summer,

If Leicester are keen to get shot of him why not loan him out with a 24 hour call back if they cover.

Dont think he will come now

Yes, every transfer is such a saga with Ipswich. Why don't we go for targets who would jump at the chance of playing for Town, such as players in League One and Two, and most European leagues except the very top ones?

Tubbs was an interesting link, so it is a shame that has been dismissed. Jewell started by buying Drury and trying to get Austin, then he signed Cresswell, so a good start shopping in lower leagues, then nothing at all after that. We've seemed to switch back to expensive Premier League and Championship loanees again.

Oh yes of course it's clearly only at ITFC where every transfer is a saga. Mark, Town on the Up...do you actually visit the websites of all the other 91 EPL & Football league clubs every day during the window to check on whether all their transfers are finalised without a hitch?

not after Tubbs ...the only half decent name I've heard linked with the club this window. Says it all, still hasn't learned, wants bigger clubs rejects still. Shift him out before we end up with a division 1 team with a huge wage bill and absolutely no sellable assets.

dont care no more - why cant ipswich get their man like all other clubs instead of this rubish - he is signing, no he is not, fans get dissapointed oh he is signing. Something to do with clegg hey ?

Since Jewell took over as manager he's been dealing with most of the transfers himself, Keane left it to Clegg. Since Jewell has taken over that side of things we have got slightly more of the players we want in BUT the facts are we need the right kind of players in and despite Jewell saying we need more up and coming players like Cressy he still goes for the opposite. Its just like blaming the defence and the lack of energy in midfield and doing diddly about it. Same actions but expecting different outcomes, isn't that the definition of idiocy?

casanovacrow you put it exactly correct.

We will be a league 1 team, no saleable assets, a huge wage bill and still a squad with no hunger or desire to get us out of that league.

I got excited when I saw Tubbs mentioned, but as usual a player that would fit the hunger and desire PJ states he wants he is not interested in.

I did hear that while we wait on St Ledger PJ is talking to Mark Bright and Steve Claridge, both fit his age bracket and type of over the hill player he loves.

Bigfish,

'dont care no more - why cant ipswich get their man like all other clubs instead of this rubish - he is signing, no he is not, fans get dissapointed oh he is signing. Something to do with clegg hey ? '

I'm 100% sure that not all clubs get all their targets all the time, I seem to remember a few years back when Man City first came into money they tried to get Kaka, I think the bid was accepted by Milan but the player himself wasn't having any of it and went to Real Madrid (Hmmm....to move from Milan, to Manchester or Madrid....???)
However I am rather doubtful of Clegg and or Evans ability to do deals, remember Shaun Derry last year was ready to sign but the deal couldn't be done and why Norris at only 30 wasn't offered the 3 year deal he was after and we go and sign a load of players older than him. Something doesn't make sense at negotiation level, but the problem isn't exclusive to us.

More uncertainty. Just what we need, especially in relation to central efence.

I don't understand why it's so difficult to sign players, 'do you want to play for Ipswich?' 'yes please!' here's some money 'thankyou very much!' good, crack on and enjoy your football. Done.

I hope Jewell/we aren't going to waste all week trying to make this deal happen..move on Now and go for someone else before it's too late yet again.

Any chance of bringing Danny Collins back?

This deal could well have happened on Monday if rather than drive to Arsenal Jewell and Clegg had driven to the Leicester area and sold the club to SSL there and then!!
