Duo Offered New Deals
Duo Offered New Deals

Boss Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues are offering striker Ronan Murray and midfielder Luke Hyam new one-year deals. Town have turned down Swindon’s offer for Murray, the 20-year-old having returned from his successful loan spell at the County Ground earlier in the week.

Jewell told the club site: "Ronan enjoyed his time at Swindon. They did make a bid for him but we have rejected it and he's now back with us.

"I have spoken to Ronan and Luke and we'd like to keep them here beyond the summer. We're in the process of offering them new contracts for another year and we'll see how things develop."

Irish U21 international Murray has made one start and eight sub appearances for the Blues, scoring one goal, while 20-year-old Hyam, who made his first league start under Paul Jewell’s management at the weekend, has made 14 starts and two sub appearances at senior level.

Thank goodness! Common sense prevails.
Both have real potential neither yet proven at championship level.
One year contract is the correct offer imo, work hard and you'll be rewarded and protecting our assests from other clubs if they decide not to accept.

One year. This is his new young player plan in operation. I thought PJ should be given to the end of the season but he's causing too much damage. If Hyam,Murray and Carson leave you couldn't blame them.

Can't see Ellington leaving, however much we all want him to. The guy has signed a 2 year contract.
Here for the longterm I'm afraid. We'll probably end up loaning him out to a conference team or something.

We are doing it again. We have umpteen players out of contract in June. There is no stability at the club and by moving everyone to one year deals we will have more deals to do next year.

Fair enough to give Luke another 12 months to try and prove himself but Murray is unlikely to make the grade at this level IMO.

All this keep them hungry stuff. Doesn't it mean keep them unsettled . You think footballers are just lazy ,offer them a long contract and they won't get out of bed in the morning. Murray will go to Swindon, we will have ellington and sign more players like Priskin and Stead.

One year deals?? We all know why that has been offered, thats a half hearted attempt that is designed to get a tribunal fee should either player refuse the new year contract that Town have offered. Swindon will obviously offer Ronan a 2 or 3 year deal, which he will take. (and would be mad not to!) and then because they are both under 24, Town can claim tribunal fees.

I have see right through you, Cleggy & PJ Trying to get yourself off the hook by saying that the club offered our young players deals that were turned down!

Does anybody know if we get extra compensation for offering them a longer or more lucrative deal and they say no? Wasn't moaning above just think it's worth safeguarding our young lads. Clever move by Jewell offering Murray a deal so he can bargain with Swindon over Ritchie?"

With all due respect, Ritchie is far more important to Swindon than Murray is to either side, so he's not much of a bargaining tool. Ipswich will need to stump up some serious wedge if they want him playing at Portman Road any time soon.

Great news. But after the way Murray has been treated by PJ will he want to sign? same applies to Carson.

Hyam is certainly a very good prospect for the future and actually better than a number of recent signings!

Its a dilemma here for the players, do they except 1 year contracts or do they reject them and hold out for 2 years or go elsewhere. Murray has the option of going to Swindon but i'm not sure about Hyam although i belive Col U might be interested. We will be entitled to compensation i believe because they are under 22 although that will have to be negotiated with their new clubs or through a tribunal (like Cressy)

my girlfriend's sister is going out with ronan, and he has told her that he would love to stay at ipswich the extra year but ideally go back to swindon on loan till the end of the season so i can see him signing. Hyam we should also sign up asap

Giving relatively unproven young players one year deals (until summer 2013), then if they stay and do well offering them something better next January - and let them know that, maybe with an option - sounds quite a good plan to me. Gives them an incentive to push on, while not tying the club up if they aren't performing or don't turn out to be good enough and can't be sold.

Good! play Hyam again on saturday and get Murray on the bench... Give him a chance if we are lacking without Scotland!

Warkys Tash you are very clued up and spot on - offered 1 year at 500 a week someone else can come in and offer better terms and the club will be allowed to claim a fee which is the game they currently play with the younger players - however there are cases where no fee can be claimed (as with the players that walked away last year at this time) so they don't always get their pay out

If the contract offer to Murray is equal or better to his current terms we would get compensation if he was to sign elsewhere (ie Swindon), if its lower we get diddly.
Chances are this is just to extract as much money from Swindon as we can for him ...probably about 50p lol

Good news, but if PJ doesn't start playing them they will leave, hopefully with Priskin out the door Ronan will get some games. Agree with the two year sentiment, if they do well you can always offer them a better contract but compared to others in the club would think these two are not that expensive so sign them for 2 years.

Great, now can we please start giving these 2 match time ahead of the useless Leadbitter and Ellington.

Offering is one thing, accepting is another. Any young talent needs nailing for longer than one year in my view

alfromcol added 15:26 - Jan 18
It is 1 year from the end of this season, so effectively it's 18 months. Quite long enough to judge if they are going to make it at PR. If they don't then they can be allowed to go, if they do then they can be offered a longer and more lucrative contract.

It is not just about the length of contract but the detailed terms and conditions.

"Does anybody know if we get extra compensation for offering them a longer or more lucrative deal and they say no? "

Only the financial terms count, when it comes to compensation. If you offer the same or more than they're on now (as casanovacrow says) you get compensation, if you offer them a wage cut, you get nothing (like we did with Eastman and Brown).

However, the compensation is based on what financial terms you and the other club offer the player. The more you both offer (in other words, how much you both value the player), the higher the compensation is.

good news.....

regarding dropping Murray into the team now, hes a natural striker who needs service from midfield, if our midfield gets sorted out then get him there for sure, if were all at 6's and 7's still id rather him sign up again and go back out on loan to swindon then come back in the summer, wont do his confidence any good playing at the higher level but not getting a sniff of a goal.......
