Grayson: Managers Can't Do Much About Players' Bad Decisions
Grayson: Managers Can't Do Much About Players' Bad Decisions
Monday, 23rd Jan 2012 09:01

Leeds boss Simon Grayson says managers can’t be blamed for the types of mistakes which saw the Blues gift his side a 3-1 victory at Elland Road on Saturday. A catalogue of disastrous decisions saw former Whites loanee keeper Alex McCarthy sent off and Town concede three goals having been ahead and on course for a long overdue return to winning ways.

Grayson says bosses can’t be blamed for the sort of mistakes made by the Town side on Saturday: “As a manager stood there on the touchline, you don’t send your players out to pass to one of our players in the 18-yard box or experienced players to make fundamental mistakes.

“These things happen in football, they are human beings and not robots. They make bad decisions at times.

“They won’t be the first bad decisions any of Paul's players make and it certainly won’t be the last time that my players make bad decisions as well.”

The former defender, who played under Paul Jewell when on loan at Bradford late in his career, thought there were similarities with the match between the teams earlier in the season when Aidan White was dismissed just after half-time for pulling down Jay Emmanuel-Thomas when he was through on goal: “It mirrored the match at Portman Road a little bit where we played really well and lost the game.”

Grayson, recently reported to be under pressure at Leeds, had praise for Blues owner Marcus Evans for trying to take the heat off Jewell with his recent programme piece: “It’s a precarious industry and full credit to the owner at Ipswich for backing Paul all the way, and rightly so because he’s a good manager and he’s got a good record of achieving things in the game.

“We’re all under pressure at times because it’s a ruthless industry but all you have to do as an individual is to work extremely hard and keep believing in what you do, and it will come true.

“That’s all I keep doing. If everybody else wants to put me under pressure, well so be it. I don’t feel any pressure because I know what I’m doing is as much as I can do to make this team successful, and I’ll keep doing that until someone tells me I won’t.”

Paz. It's a mixed bag imo. Cresswell is an excellent signing. Andrews , Collins and stockdale were all good. Jet is hard to say yet but is certainly improving. Ing was awful and ellington I don't rate but they were both free. And chopra, bullard and Bowyer have all in my opinion let him down but as I posted on here weeks ago were all heralded by supporters as great signings when made, and bullard and chopra still could be. Bowyer I think we should let go. Lastly drury is now showing why we paid 150k for him and could also be a bargain. So overall as i said a mixed bag .

thechangingman: it's gonna get a LOT worse before it gets any better... :(

Is that possible? personally I can't see it getting any worse, if we can strengthen the back four this window the situation should improve dramatically, shouldn't it?

Sounds like the Sky Sports old boys club to me.

Well he would say that would'nt he, all managers stick up for their own profession, the problem is that we have poor quality players, our coaching is poor and cannot sign adequate replacements.

@Dozzels_Bobblehat.
Good points and well made. It amuses me how some posters take every story, real or speculative, and turn it into an opportunity to make negative statements about the manager, some players, the chief exec and/or the owner, without even attempting to look at it objectively or to see if there is any truth in it.
It's also amusing to note how someone can be deemed a "Paul Jewell fan" if they make a reasonable comment about a situation without including the term "PJ Out".
There are many of us who are aghast at how the team is performing at the moment without looking to turn every single story on here into a "he's a rubbish manager" forum.
Some of the reasons we are doing so poorly ARE the fault of the manager, others are things that land at this door but were not of his making, then there are the things that are totally out of his control or are being dealt with quietly behind the scences and finally there are the parts that are just made up nonsense and thus irrelevant.
Surely any manager, be he Jim Magilton, Roy Keane, Paul Jewell or even Bobby Robson is due fair comment in respect of any issue or situation, whether we think he is the right man for the job or not?

I do agree with Grayson....nobody coaches the players to make those bad mistakes.
Nevertheless I feel that we need to examine the root of the problem. We were very blase with McAuley's contract renewal and I understand that he would have signed a three year deal. Granted he had the occasional poor spell, however, he was usually solid, is an international and now a premier league player and is much better than what we have now. So what did we do? We borrowed Danny Collins on a short term basis and brought in Sonko as a panic buy. Collins has gone and Sonko while sometimes good in the air is turning into a liability. It is evident that Sonko, Delaney and Smith need a strong CB with a brain to play alongside. Ingi (who scouted him?) was too slow and injury prone.
So who was responsible for the McAuley cock-up? Evans, Clegg or Jewel?
We had better get those Portsmouth lads in and hope that they can stop the rot.

after saturdays game i was annoyed and started saying all the the things that fans say after letting another another lead slip after some naff defending.but then i do realize we did play bloody well for a large part of the game .we've got over a week to the hammers game, so i hope that one glaring fault that stops us winning (defense and marshaling it )will be worked on intensely.i dont see that making defensive purchases will necessarily fix the problem straight away(though we do need to sign some).our defense knows what to expect, god knows how many times they have been in that situation! get that sorted then we will be back on track. coyb

Its Monday, following yet another drubbing, and there's still no news of a sacking. Has he got shares in teflon?

"all you have to do as an individual is to work extremely hard and keep believing in what you do, and it will come true"

Not necessarily true.

Well said Len Brennan and Dozzells Bobblehat. I wonder what would have happened to our club if we'd had the internet in Bobby Robson's early days at the club when their was a lot of fan discontent at Sir Bobby's appointment (he had failed at his previous club) The quickfix shortsighted fans who slag off whoever our manager is after every defeat would have had the knives out for Sir Bobby. Thank heavens that we had a Chairman who took not a blind bit of notice of those moaning fans.
