Jewell Set to Speak to Leadbitter
Jewell Set to Speak to Leadbitter
Wednesday, 28th Mar 2012 11:00

Town boss Paul Jewell says he plans to hold contract talks with midfielder Grant Leadbitter in the next few days. Leadbitter’s current deal is up at the end of June with the former Sunderland man having turned down the initial offer of new terms early in the season.

Speaking in his post-match Radio Suffolk interview after the 26-year-old missed a penalty and scored a superb goal in the 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough, Jewell said: “We want to keep him here. I was speaking with the owner last night about it and I’ll be speaking with Grant in the next couple of days.

“We’ve never really sat down and spoken because it’s been a difficult season with one thing and another. Now we’re not going to go down maybe we can sit down and have a chat with him. We’d like to keep him here next year and beyond.”

mschultz76, some common sense amidst a lot of rubbish spoken about Leadbitter. He currently has a role that suits him and has lost the burden of captaincy. Some of you have very intransigent opinions on a number of players and cannot give credit when it is due. For all their endeavours (and I like them both), neither Drury or Hyam have Grant's class and we will be a better side next season with him in the team. As for questioning his commitment, even when he wasn't playing well, please watch the games objectively.

He is another Norris and has his future mapped out, otherwise he would have been talking to the management to find out what is on offer.

I believe that his agent has already received offers to go elsewhere. GL out of contract can pocket a large signing on fee in place of a transfer fee that the new club would have to pay ITFC if he was still in contract.

i thought he looked very committed in last nights game, the distraught look on his face when he missed the penalty and the fist pump and celebration when he scored shows me that he is a worthy player of our clubs shirt.

I like him, tho he must be aware that his last 2 years of service have warranted a drop in wages as well as the new fair play rules, but his recent form warrants a new contract. A key player next season if he stays.

over the coming 2 / 3 years i think most championship players will be taking pay cuts. All is not as it seems with a lot of clubs, money isnt there, owners are cutting budgets, Forest wil have issues in a year or two now their owner has died, more will follow..... im sure GL will be very aware of the Norris scenario, he will also be aware of the MacAuley scenario, so unless a mid / bottom table prem team come in for him, which i dont think they will, does he go to someone who offers him big bucks but might not be able to pay like Norris, or stay with a team he knows, in an area he knows, with an owner who pays the shortfalls? Big decision for him, im not hugely fussed either way, but wouldnt mind him staying if he keeps current form up.......

Too little too late. Leadbitter will get better offers from Championship clubs - we will look to cut his salary by 75% and then wonder why he leaves and we can't sign anyone with that approach.

Leadbitter is the purfect cover for Hyam and visa versa as surely bowyer will go in the summer , both suffer poor form when playing for long spells so would offset each other nicely. alternating between the two.

but if this was a plan surely we should have started a proper dialogue sooner so the player knows that he is in the clubs plans....

Championship clubs are in the same boat Jas with regard to capped contract offers. If anyone can offer him a top salary, we'll be one of those clubs so that's probably a moan for the sake of a moan.

Plenty of players in the Leadbitter mould.

I think the too little too late comment should be about his performances over the last 2 1/2 years. Lots of fans seem to have changed their tune given a decent run of 5 or 6 games...

If he can maintain this form i'd like to see him stay but if not, Sammy Clingan would be a good cut price replacement with good experience for me and a good foil for Drury, Bullard and Stevenson. Hyam the perfect cover too...

Nice run of form recently, but I think it's time to say goodbye.
When PJ talks to him who will act as interpreter?

Beware the player who suddenly plays well and scoreth goals for he doth seek more cash and an extension to his terms and conditions - so to speak!

Everyone must know that his contract is running down and yet no-one came in for him during the winter transfer window. That doesn't suggest that they're queuing up to sign him. I think we should be able to strike a pretty good deal with young Mr Leadbitter!

Personally I like Leadbitter and the fact he hasn't moaned or gone public when things weren't going for him is a plus in my book. He hasn't has a great season but he has shown good form since coming back into the team and whilst I would prefer to see Hyam in there because he is young and hungry Leadbitter is more experienced and if he maintains his form would be good to have here next season. If he decides to take up a better offer elsewhere ITFC will go on without him.

all you people wanting him to sign, reallllllllly!?

yes he's on good form, yes he's scored a few of late. Reality is though, this comes 2 years after he signed for us!

Leadbitter is an average champ player at best, really is. Many of you on here have absolutely slaughtered the guy for the best part of his time at town

Let him go, play Hyam and Drury again! sign a new centre midfielder in summer, who is young and creative

I've always liked him. Think he has suffered from mis management and playing in a very ordinary midfield, now we have some more shape, width and confidence he is playing well.

Think a prem club will take him on a free- Andrews went to West Brom and I think at his best this guy can be more useful than Andrews.
Never been a captain though.

Although by his previous standards he has done well in the last few games, but have we actually played well as a team since his return. Get rid and let Hyam and Drury start doing the business again.

Blueo4.... I have heard leadbitter give an interview he can hardly string a sentence together, so thats why he doesnt do interviews i guess. But it should only be about the football on the pitch anyway, players can say whatever they like and they will say whatever they think we want to hear as well, remember others have and we have been taken in as well( i know i have). I have to admit i have never rated him, but in his last 5/6 games he has been a different player.
As for him resigning, well if its the old Grant "no thanks" if its the latter one "yes please". Why has it taken him all this time to find this type of form? no point in asking him, is it for a new contract here or somewhere else ? only time will tell.... Actually i half wonder, could it be the man management skills of Jewell, he has transformed Martin and Jet is really starting to mature under his management.... as i say we will see soon on this one....coyb

bluekeen :- Did the management not already try to do the business when offering him a new contract ?
If all players are being offered less at all levels, then surely Grant will surely be treated the same.
