Cropper Released
Cropper Released
Monday, 23rd Apr 2012 22:44

Town have told third-choice goalkeeper Cody Cropper that he won’t be offered a new contract at the end of the season. The US U20 international's current one-year deal is up at the end of June.

Cropper tweeted his disappointment: “It’s honestly so depressing but at the same time it’s good to know that I can move on to bigger and better things.”

The 19-year-old, who has missed much of the campaign due to a knee injury, joined the Blues’ Academy on a two-year scholarship in the summer of 2010.

As he was a year older than is usually the case for scholars, he signed a one-year professional contract last summer while he completed his time at Playford Road.

He has been on the first-team bench on three occasions, most recently at Crystal Palace 10 days ago, but never made a senior appearance.

The 6ft 3in tall Atlanta-born stopper, whose father is English, impressed the Town youth set-up in trials during 2009/10, having previously spent similar spells at Leicester, Arsenal, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wolves and West Ham.

Why a disgraceful

Leicester Arsenal Birmingham Portsmouth Wolves and West Ham had a look at him and said no after a trial.
Town have given him 2 years of coaching and wages and now they feel he is not good enough to make the grade.

Town are looking for a new number one,so Cropper would only get on the bench at best,

Is Cropper better than ALB (I dont know as never seen Cropper play) I would say not, Jewell has hinted that Wright may be here next year, If thats the case I would as Wright is a better keeper than Cropper and ALB.

So

No 1 ?
No 2 Wright
No 3 ALB
No 4 Cropper.

If town dont sign Wright and a new number 1 I would say Bullard will take over in goal

@tomisamos I get your point about keepers having long careers and generally reaching their prime later on but if a keeper is still a journeyman in his prime then they obviously aren't very good. Take Mark Schwarzer for example Fulham wouldn't dream of letting him go even when Arsenal were after him. I don't know of many keepers over the age of 30 that move clubs very often. In the last 10 years Friedel has only been at three clubs. In any case I was talking about players in general not keepers.

I love the way everyone seems to know he is the next best thing and was going to be Towns Number 1 for years to come. I saw him training with the US team for a few days and didn't seem all that good, decent shot stopper but not a lot else, plus he didn't hold the ball well when saving it.

I'm glad Jewell got rid, obviously wasn't that good.

whats the point in having a youth system if the young lads are never going to be given a chance. he is 20,obviously has potential, and as a keeper won't reach his prime for several more years, ie time for him to improve a lot.why can't pj and his coaching staff be the ones to improve him in this time? its lazy management, he wants the finished articles,30+ players who he can't tell anything different than they have heard before a; because they remember his outdated style and era of management and b; because he doesn't have the abilty(along with his mates) to improve players in any way. people will say, "look at jet, look at martin", but they are mavericks with natural ability. i posted the other day about miduako being taken on by leicester and was shot down for being negative, and i'm sorry for being down about this. you just would have wanted russell osman to have got something out of him, or eastman, or meekings or troy brown etc. i fear for our great club if we carry on this path. maybe none of these young players have been good enough, but we always seem to come up against a scott loach, or jordan rhodes or liam trotter who will rub our noses in it in the future.

Never saw him play, so unlike some of you i wont question the decision to release him. But 2 points of note here, firstly i cant believe the club would release him if he was gonna make the grade, we are desperate for an established no1...My second point is this, look at all the other clubs who felt he wasnt going to make the grade. thats 7 clubs including us. That is a lot of knowledgeable (football people) who certainly know more than the majority on here.
There are many decisions being made that baffle me thats for sure, but we need facts b4 we post. we dont know everything that goes on.....COYB

Jewell is fast becoming as good a manager as Roy Keane.

Only a fool would have given that clown ALB a contract lasr summer. Cropper is a better keeper in his sleep.

Jewell out (no doubt after three more years of mid-table dross)

money s not always the answer, it maybe that he was very disruptive in the squad.... other issues will often play a bigger part,

besides you never know what was being demanded by the agents on the players behalf meaning we did not even bother to waste time on the contract offer.

I can see it now..Ipswich will bring in next season 7 on-loan keepers one after the other and ALB will be shunted around and as usual we will be found wanting. Confused, mixed up club with no emphasis on youth. Money thrown away. I remember even Paul Cooper had to wait 2 years before taking over from Laurie Sivell who himself then played reserve keeper from 1975 to 1984. We had a fine line in keepers in Price, Supple but now since Davis left in 2005 it's been just a procession of players, one after the other. Play ALB period and keep a junior Town player.

It does seem odd. However I'm sure the club has something in mind and it's based on more than just seeing a few friendlies.

As far as young/hungry players go I'll happily make an exception for an experienced keeper.

I love how some people can still blame Clegg for this.

No never play ALB!

I cant think why anyone would want a keeper who is at fault for a goal every other game in their side, he is league 2 level at best, and I am being kind to him there.

Seen him in the youths and reserves and surprised he was kept on then.

A big keeper who doesn't dominate his area, flaps at crosses and just not that good.

A decent decision to let him go and give him a chance elsewhere.

There is something amiss with Academy etc. All very sad for Ipswich's future.

TractorMan thank you for your view from someone who has actually seen him play rather than those see young player and immediately slate us for letting him go without any knowledge of the lads skill! Diss once again a balanced view. personally i was suprised when i saw the headline as i had hoped he would be a good keeper coming through the ranks BUT i chose not to give an oppinion as it would have been guessed due to the fact i have never seen him play and am not a football coach or manager so do not know what would be considered 'worth keeping'. the good news is we must have at least one CB and one GK lined up to have let Cropper and indeed Sonko go...........

Karlofaqndangal before you post please get your information correct. You along with another one or two on this subject of Cody Cropper have no idea what you are talking about. I am not bother'd if you think he was good or not so good, but I do not like people who run player's career's down using false information. You state that Leicester,Arsenal, Portsmouth ,Birmingham,Wolves,West Ham.All said No after trials. For your information Wolves,Leicester,West Ham, Portsmouth all offered Cody Cropper a Contract but Cody was having problems with his duel Nationality Passport being issued. When that was sorted it took almost a year to get his international clearance. The club's could not wait any longer and introduced him to other club's.This is how he came to Ipswich and they held on to him until it finally came through.Arsenal would have taken him on if he lived in the close vacinity because he was only 15 years old .They told him to come back a year later. Birmingham was the only team not to offer him a contract. ERICGATES agree with what you say entirely but just one point to put you right Cody Cropper has just turned 19 not 20 years of age makes it sound even more stupid what they have done. Do not speculate about Cody Cropper it is obvious what is on the cards for Ipswich a New Number 1 Richard Wright Number 2 ALB Number3 very little youth left at Ipswich only trialist's most of the Academy youth have gone not being offered anything.I think this will work out for the best for Cody Cropper he can now move on and get some playing time and be judged on his game. Not being judged on his training with an injury .Paul Jewell is Pathetic knows sod all about the youth here at Ipswich, We were renowned for bringing on player's through the Academy, A lot of you on here do nothing but slag them off now and make your own little story's up about them ,Most of them totally untrue. About time we had proper dialog on here not made up story's. Good Luck Cody Cropper where ever you may go .But please don't come back to haunt us .Some very good comments on this subject by people who know what they are talking about as for the other's GET LOST COYB

BLUELADY Just read your post well done, your comment on this subject is very proper and should be for any person who does not have any fact's on the subject. A lot of people talk rubbish and take a negative view making up story's regardless of the harm they are doing for this club

Hopefully PJ and his staff know what they are doing. These sort of decisions are not taken lightly. I am happy yo wait and see who they have in mind as the 2012/13 first team keeper. Not too worried about who the 3rd choice keeper is.

The point made by an earlier poster, that the club needs to get its PR skills sorted and give the supporters info on why some of these decisions are being made, otherwise rumours, such as many generated on here, take over from facts.

So now we have two goalkeepers; Wright and Lee-Barret. Now if one is injured and the other booked in a match then we have no goalkeepers. Nice decision Town!!! Real smooth.

Read the above "had spells at Leicester, Arsenal, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wolves and West Ham before signing for Ipswich. 6 clubs before us rejected him and we took a punt on him and it didn't work out. Get over it, he clearly wasn't good enough!

Cropper has potential but also had a bad injury that kept him out for most of the season due to knee injury.

I am sure this was a factor behind the decision to let him go. Regardless of his potential maybe that club fear he is injury prone and not worth the risk of a contract. Having to rotate keepers is not ideal (as we have seen this season) and it unsettles the defense.
I really wish the lad the best and I hope he goes on to have a good injury free career.

OK I'll admit it, I was taken in by those on here who assume that every youngster who comes through the youth system is going on to great things and thought along with some that what I'd READ and READ only meant this guy was the real deal. Seems some who have seen him (I haven't) really don't rate him, so maybe the club was right to release him. I think some on here need to get over themselves about our youth system and assuming that every product is one of greatness (although it would be nice to see some more good youth coming through compared to what we have had lately) and I will stop forming opinions on players and situations based on hearsay and not first hand evidence.
