Cropper Released
Cropper Released
Monday, 23rd Apr 2012 22:44

Town have told third-choice goalkeeper Cody Cropper that he won’t be offered a new contract at the end of the season. The US U20 international's current one-year deal is up at the end of June.

Cropper tweeted his disappointment: “It’s honestly so depressing but at the same time it’s good to know that I can move on to bigger and better things.”

The 19-year-old, who has missed much of the campaign due to a knee injury, joined the Blues’ Academy on a two-year scholarship in the summer of 2010.

As he was a year older than is usually the case for scholars, he signed a one-year professional contract last summer while he completed his time at Playford Road.

He has been on the first-team bench on three occasions, most recently at Crystal Palace 10 days ago, but never made a senior appearance.

The 6ft 3in tall Atlanta-born stopper, whose father is English, impressed the Town youth set-up in trials during 2009/10, having previously spent similar spells at Leicester, Arsenal, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wolves and West Ham.

Awful decision. Jewel had better get in some good keepers or he'll be ridiculed for this all next season. Good luck to Cody, hope he proves Jewel wrong and makes a name for himself.

Not massively supprised everytime I see him play he made a mistake however the word is that our Academy is the biggest laughing stock in youth football at the moment and its being proven with results, releases and youth players refusing to sign contracts. After a big injury he had he deserved more time in my opinion. All the best Cody!

I havent seen the lad play so i cant comment personally. However our coaching staff have seen him play for two years and between them all have decided he isnt good enough. Its as simple as that isnt it? I think some people on here are a bit obsessed with "youth" at the minute. Yes we have a good reputation and hopefully that will continue, but not every group of youngsters will produce first team players. Good luck to the lad and lets hope this and Sonko's release means we have some signings lined up.

Well i'm baffled...

Do we really trust in PJ?

Ask yourselves this..if he took us up,do you really think he'd keep us up?..I don't..which is why we should be looking further ahead than the championship..we need someone in charge capable of putting together a good young team who can then compete in the prem for more than 1 season..Jewell ain't that guy..he's too stuck in his ways & the fans are too divided on him.

I think a fresh start is needed with maybe Lee Clark or Darren Ferguson..they don't need a massive rebuild, just 6 out 6 in.

Sadly,I've got a feeling we're going nowhere again next season.

Good luck Cody as I said previously we join an U21 league and jewell kicks out all the players eligible to play in it. The management has become a joke and yes it is Jewell who decides on contracts and then SC negotiates heaven help us the two of these could not organise a party in a brewery

Sorry pressed the wrong key ..four out of the five teams offered Cropper a Contract Arsenal wanted him back in 12 month's time because of his age ie 15 Birmingham said no. Portmouth was writing up a contract while he was there but had to withdraw it as the club was going bust and having to sell a lot of player's to survive ,that was a couple of years back. I have'nt seen him play but is it such a surprise that we have released a third choice keeper, there are only occasional reserve games and I would imagine Wright will sign another 1 year deal, I would play him ahead of ALB but that's just my opinion, the bigger problems are elsewhere, Bowyer, Bullard, Ellington, Leadbitter all on big wages, time to clear the decks and get some fresh legs in but don't hold your breath, that would mean actually going out to look for players, its a novel concept I know but actually other clubs do just that, but remember this is PR, awash with apathy and lack of ambition, run by fools.

good luck to the lad but maybe he wasn't quite up to it, I have to trust the judgement of the coach, in this case Malcolm Webster and probably Russell Osman too.....as "Town men" they will know if Cody is right or wrong for the club, maybe there is someone better, with more potential coming through?

tractorboy - we dont go out an look for players?????? .........Chopra, Cresswell, Bowyer, JET, Drury, Stevenson, Murphy, Stockdale, Andrews, Collins, Bullard, Sonko, Ellington etc etc. Not all of those have worked out but really dont think you can say we dont go and look/sign players.

Is there anyone within the club reading these comments who can change things for the better? Tellitasiseeit- you're right that there needs to be a sensible, productive dialogue... but not between fans, needs to be people within the club recognising a 'problem'.

wow, so much drama, last keeper we released went on to huge things didnt he?

Lewis Price.....
2003—2007 Ipswich Town 68 (0)
2004 → Cambridge United (loan) 6 (0)
2007—2010 Derby County 6 (0)
2008 → Milton Keynes Dons (loan) 2 (0)
2009 → Luton Town (loan) 1 (0)
2009—2010 → Brentford (loan) 13 (0)
2010— Crystal Palace 5 (0)

Webster was here then too wasnt her? Lewis went, and did huge things? Some players just arent up to it, we'll know in 2 or 3 years if CC is one of those, not by next week.... Even if Arsenal do sign him up as a 6th choice keeper, they can afford to, we cant.....

Been here 5 minutes, spent 4.5 of those injured, can't break into a team with no keeper.

Goodbye, you'll not be missed.

Well done Jewell.

Why is everyone worried about goalkeepers, we've managed all season without proper CB's?

Shame, thought he was going to be a decent prospect.
Need to sign two new goalkeepers now!!!

Yet another youngster being released, yet PJ is offering a 37 year old in Bowyer a new deal. But as people on here say - PJ really does treat the youngsters well ...

A complete and utter shambles from a manager who has delivered a dreadful season and who now needs to rebuild the team this Summer, after failing to address the defence and keeper situation last year, whilst relying on loans and ageing has beens. I really can';t see what some people see in PJ! However, everyone entitled to their opinion

It is easy for those of you who have never watched these boys to run them down say it's his attitude, he is being greedy, it's the agent truth is it all comes down to fool jewell and his clowns. He does not even acknowledge/watch the youngsters can't be bothered to communicate with them too busy doing press conferences because he likes the sound of his own voice. ITS NO SURPRISE THEY WANT OUT its a miserable place to be and easier to run down the youth than admit theres a problem and deal with it

newboy - the proof of the pudding will be if any of these youngsters make the grade anywhere else.

dozzelbobblewhats it I am starting to think you are one of his cronies the way you talk about PJ the club unfortunately with the *rap training on offer here with osman they are already behind their peers

softspot added 13:42 - Apr 24
newboy- that's what I'm talking about! Boys can have talent and potential but they need the right coaching. Shouting and abusing doesn't tend to get the best results!

bluelady added 13:48 - Apr 24
newboy why does somone having a differant view from you automatically become one of his 'cronies' . Tell me how often have you watched cropper in training and playing? what footballing coaching qualification do you have that suddenly makes you the xpert on these players and the fact the training is *rap eh? All Dozzell is saying is the real proof will be is if this lad makes it elsewhere, if he does then yes we have made a mistake, if not then maybe, just maybe the guys in charge know more than you eh? nothing wrong with some of us having a glass half full approach it makes our lives that much happier than those who will see bad in every thing that is said and done.

I agree with NewBoy you are right Paul Jewell hasnt got a clue from the first to the youth. The first team is an absolute disgrace at the moment and all the things I have about the youth set up don't sound much better. The man is ruining the club along with clegg and by the sounds of it Osman what i am confused with is where is Sammy Morgan he is head of youth isnt he? I dont seem to hear anything about him just Osman he is only 18s manager surely Morgan is above him?
