Jewell and Staff Hold Blackpool Post-Mortem
Monday, 27th Aug 2012 06:02

Boss Paul Jewell was planning to hold a post-mortem with his staff in the wake of Saturday's 6-0 loss at Blackpool. With the Capital One Cup tie at Carlisle on Tuesday, the Blues stayed at a hotel in the North-West after the heavy defeat.

Jewell said: “We’ll definitely sit down as a staff and look at it, analyse it. But I just think they were cheap goals. It’s not just the goals [themselves], it’s times we give goals away and the manner we give goals away.

“I don’t think our keeper Scott Loach has had too many saves to make. I looked at the stats at half-time. We had more crosses than them, we had more shots than them and yet we found ourselves 2-0 down.

“The key element that I keep coming back to is that we’ve got to be better in their final third and we’ve got to do better in our final third, simple as that.”

He added: “It’s not going to be a pleasant night tonight [Saturday], that’s for sure. But we’re here, we’ve got beaten 6-0, we’ve got to deal with it.

"We’ve got to dust ourselves down and look forward to training [on Sunday] and look forward to the game.

“We can’t do anything about this game. We can learn about it, you learn about certain individuals, but we’ve got to move on to Tuesday.”

Jewell insisted the youth of his side had no bearing on the manner of the defeat: “I’m not going to blame the young squad for that because I thought some of the goals were basic errors.

“The first one is a mistake from absolutely nowhere - there’s no danger. The second one we’re playing football in the wrong area. We want to pass the ball but to pass the ball on the halfway line with a minute [of the half] to go is not what we’re after. That was an experienced player.

“You get through to half-time at 1-0, you never know. Even at 2-0, the next goal’s vital and once they scored [the third the game was over].

“They’re a good team Blackpool, they’ve been together for quite a while, they’ve got players who are playing with a massive amount of confidence and Ian Holloway’s done a brilliant job here. You look at their bench and they’ve got players who can change the course of the game on it.”

Seasiders’ midfielder Thomas Ince scored two, assisted three and was even involved in the early stages of the sixth and Jewell says the 20-year-old, the son of ex-England skipper Paul, has made significant progress recently: “He’s a good player. He’s come on leaps and bounds in the last year. Ian’s got a lot of flair players who are playing with a lot of confidence.

“They’ve got the master himself, Kevin Phillips, who is an example to all young players. His movement and his understanding of the game is second to none. I’m sure Thomas Ince and Matt Phillips and all these players will learn a lot just training with Kevin.”

The Blues are set to train at Fleetwood today, Jewell having decided to stay in the North-West having worked out that his squad would spend 24 hours on their coach if the travelled back home after Blackpool and then made the return trip to Carlisle. They trained at Stoke’s facilities on Friday.

"Blackpool are a good team and Ian Holloway has done a brilliant job"..... No sh#t Sherlock!!!
Perhaps you should take him on Loan to hold your hand Mr Jewell, at least we will have someone in the changing room and dugout who knows what they are taking about and is constantly pro-active instead of re-active and living on the back of something they did ten years ago!!

Love it. Norwich fan in disguise comment above sums up some of the fans of the club. One poor defeat and automatic promotion that was about after the Watford win is disappearing according to some.

Get on with it. We are not the world beaters some keep banging on about, we are an average championship side who are trying to play football the right way. Yes they are going to get beaten now and again but they are going to entertain as well which is all the majority of fans want. If you want hoofball it is not going to happen. Give the side a chance there is going to be more wins then defeats this season but at the end of the day so long as they continue to play half decent football that is all that matters and that is the only way the young players in the side are going to learn

What next? Bring in Redknapp!

I bet that in the home fixture against Blackpool we get a big win. Our little squad is going to get better and better and gain in confidence and Blackpool will stay exactly the same. Albeit a very good side. We play some lovely football at times. We just need to play it all the time. However, having said that. We still need another striker a centre back and a left winger.

Shambles, not enough players, no financial backing from Evans, Obviously not going to renew PJ contract so may as well get rid. If they see a future with Jewell (god help us) then they need to finance some key transfer activity.

No excuses. It does not matter about being only 3 games in. We lost 6-0 after a summer break that we were meant to improve in. I will always support the club and back that with season tickets, but with results like this 3-4 times a season then something is wrong at ITFC

Losing 6-0 away to Blackpool (or any other team in our league) at any stage of the season is a disgrace! Thee are no excuses for that, and frankly it has happened far too often to us just lately (Peterborough and Southampton). Now it is time for Evans to sort this club out and bring real football people in - rather than smug gits like Clegg and ex-Olympic rowers.

And one other thing, why is it, whenever anyone questions the club or disagrees with the official line on here now, that so many people with rose-tinted glasses start shouting about moaners, not true supporters et al?

All I want is what is best for our once-great club - and what we have at the moment is not the best! That makes me a true supporter no a moaner!!

Next few days critical to restoring belief. Will PJ get financial backing to bring in any new players and will the team prove that the Blackpool result was just a shocking one off with a resounding win against Carlisle?

We all know that Rhodes will score at least one goal against us on Saturday. By then will there be enough belief and team spirit to ensure that we can score at least 2 or 3 goals to beat Huddersfield?

Carlisle isnt an easy place to go to, as Norwich found out in the cup a few years back... not the ideal game after a 6-0 thrashing.

I am happy with the 4 points we have so far. Also with the players we have brought in but if the owner is not going to pay the money for Jewell targets then he is the reason why we are bringing in loans. Paul Jewell is using the players we have at Town. Clegg and the Owner sorts out the contracts. maybe after Saturdays result Evans will spend but only time will tell, But for calling for the mangers head after 1 bad result must be the people who took the bet that he would be the first out of the Door. Plus what manger would want to take over a Club which does not back there manger with transfer funds???

Sorry to say it but Smith is not good enough and is a division 1 player at best. If he can't cope with strikers in this division then how is going to cope with Rooney, Tevez or Van Persie in the Prem League?

PauloJulio i like your thinking but we need to get out of this Division first :-)

Its not really about the game at Blackpool, last season we lost 7-1, but that was shortly after Norwich hammering us, and before losing heavily again. The test of this team and whether they have improved is if this time they react properly, i.e. go out and go on a run of decent results, that will give me hope that given time this team, plus one or two additions has potential.

I think the 7-1 was the weekend after the Soton game where we got hammered (on the break as usual). But must be remembered the 7-1 was against a more noticeably inferior side to Blackpool and as IH says he thinks the scoreline flattered and we played some good stuff just with no killer instinct. Personally I would like to see someone with a bit more of a goal threat in Lee Martins role and move Marting in to Jets position until he can string a 90 mins together. Yes another striker would be good preferably in the Lambert mould big strong, always putting defenders on the back foot and when we need it he can partner Chops in a 442 or 352 etc.

Agree with daniel9624, it is all about our reaction to this game. Lets see.

All excuses Blackpool good side Southampton won on the break just admit ITFC at the moment are rubbish and if Jewell had any backbone he would walk away and take his coaches with him but he wont do that as he is deluded just like mos t of the idiots on this site

Its a bad loss but still only worth 3 pts.
Its a new season, new younger team and a clean slate imo.
Its not acceptable to loose games at this level in this fashion on a regular basis.
Let this be a one off against one of the top teams in the division.

As some of you have said its all about how we react and overcome this setback in the teams development. A good performance, a win and a few goals against Carlisle will bring us into weekend in a positive frame of mind. I just hope the players dont withdraw in to their shells as we have seen on the past after a bad result!!!
