The Greatest Number Nines
Monday, 27th Aug 2012 10:18

To celebrate being named the official charity of The Football League, Prostate Cancer UK asked websites and bloggers from each of the 72 clubs — including TWTD - to name the top five strikers to have worn their number nine shirt.

The number nine was chosen in recognition of the fact that prostate cancer affects one in nine men.

Phil’s assessment of the greatest Blues number nines can be found here, along with those at the other 71 Football League clubs.

Well before my time, but Tom Garneys record stands out. Also, Alex Mathie will always be special for that hat-trick, though top five of all time is a stretch!!

I don't agree Mariner is the obvious No. 1. His link up play and general movement were better than Crawford's but Ray was easily the better goalscorer. It is always subjective comparing different eras but I don't think the ranking is as obvious as Phil implies. I'm actually interested in how you made your judgement, Phil, as you can't possibly have seen Crawford play and, perhaps, not even Mariner unless I'm being very generous regarding your age!

It is not just about scoring goalsbut scoring goals to win the most vital games. Ray Crawford, together with Roger Osborne, scored the goals that won us the league and the cup. In 1981 in the last vital away game V Middlesborough we needed to win to hold on to the top spot, Mariner scored but it wasn't enough. If he had scored a hatrick that day he would have my vote for sure. I think about that game every day.

I remember watching Tom Garneys playing alongside Ted Phillips. They were a great pairing and he scored prolifically. But you don't hear of him any more

Obviously I'm joking, but I did love Pablo and I don't care that not many others did. Haven't been too many in my short lifetime.

Phil you are usually quite balanced but whilst I admit to being a fan of mariner you really don't need to look any further than Crawford as the best number 9 ever. Just look in the stats book . Not only was he the complete leader of the line he was an incredible poacher of goals. So that's Ray first and Paul best of the rest but somewaÅ· back I'm afraid. Honourable mentions to Johnson 70s variety and Tom 'give it to ' Garneys
