Jewell: We'll Lift Players During Break
Monday, 8th Oct 2012 06:00

Town boss Paul Jewell says he’ll spend the international break trying to lift his players for the trip to Hull City and the home game against his former club Derby County which follow the two-week gap. The break gives the Blues’ new loanees — Richie Wellens, DJ Campbell and Bilel Mohsni — a chance to work on their fitness and with their new team-mates.

Jewell said: “It’s always a question people always ask you. ‘is it a good time to have an international break or not?’

“It doesn’t matter, it’s there and we’ve got to try and lift the players for the next two games which come very quickly.”

Defender Tommy Smith and midfielder Josh Carson will be away with New Zealand and Northern Ireland respectively during the break.

Asked whether he’d prefer an immediate Tuesday game to follow the loss to the Bluebirds to give his side a chance to put a position result on the board, Jewell responded: “Or a Sunday morning game.”

The Blues boss was pleased with Wellens and Campbell’s performances against the Welshmen, although the pair were withdrawn in the second half due to their lack of match fitness: “I thought they both did well.

“It’s the chance you take, it’s not ideal. I think they’ll both get better with games and obviously we’ve got a two-week break now. It’s not ideal but we knew that before we took them.”

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay had no problem that Campbell didn’t own up to his handball goal just before half-time, putting the blame wholly on referee Eddie Ilderton and his linesman: “I think it’s irrelevant as the referee’s given the goal.

“It makes no odds whether he said he meant or he didn’t mean it. We’ve got a linesman and a referee who should have seen it.”

Former Canary Mackay says he has sympathy with opposite number Jewell and believes that in the Championship things can change swiftly: “It’s a tough league but things turn quickly. If you look, for example, at Peterborough, those first seven games [that they lost], then they go and win two games on the bounce.

“It’s such a precarious league, such a tough league, it’s unrelenting. Things just turn on a knife edge sometimes and sometimes takes a bobble and something to go in and teams go on a run.

“That could quite easily happen with Ipswich, they’ve got good players here. It could quite easily happen with them, like it could happen with every team in the league.

“I’ve been in this league for 15 years and it’s never changed. It’s unrelenting, it’s unforgiving and you have to put hard work in every game you go into and the players have to do that.

“Sometimes it’s a little twist or a little turn of fate that gives you a little run of games, and that could easily happen.”

Meanwhile, former Blues trialist Kevin Pezzoni has joined Hertha Berlin on trial. The former FC Köln man’s wage demands ruled out Town progressing their interest any further.

We need a fork lift truck to lift the players out of their current mood. Onwards and upwards hopefully.

Can you lift us Paul? I still think paul is the man for the job but players are making costly mistakes and that will cost him his job. The players need to learn that they have to concentrate for 90 mins and not switch off.

I think PJ should look at the fitness of his players first. second half we seem to have run out of steam and Scotland didnt have any steam when he came on still we should have won anyway goalkeeper errors he needs to bulk up so he has confidence to come for crosses

There will be plenty of offers to give you a lift home to west Yorkshire Mr Jewell.

On what evidence do you think he is still capable of turning it around. Derby fans warned us and they were right.

Next 2 games, away to hull and home to sheff Wed and they will be the last 2 games of wellens and higginbottoms loans.

Mr Clegg refers to a tipping point, well the majority of fans are way beyond that and if it goes on as we are we could be cut a drift.

We keep hearing how 'all the teams are close in ability', how 'its a close league', how 'any team can beat any other team'. With that the case, what is stopping us?

My view? Paul Jewell.

I really beleieve we have the bones of a team that can win games but the tactics employed are basic, easy to counter and reliant upon at least 1 player having a 'stormer'- when was the last time you/we saw a cohesive tactical performace where we utterly over-ran the opposition? (8-9 months ago?) When was the last time anyone took a moment to pause and think Jewell had tactically outdone his opposite number?

There comes a point where you have to conceed we aren't in the bottom 2 due to bad luck, just as the top team isn't always lucky.

Malky says he has been in this league for 15 years, same as us then( well almost) . we have been going around in circles since big Joe left. Its what Budhists call" samsara", means ,"To perpetually wander". And its no wonder is it? same old mistakes over and over, Loan players in, (too many) contracts being allowed to run down on expensive imports, constantly tinkering with the team because he doesnt know his best team. A constant flow of poor decisions by players leading to game losing mistakes( surely they should be ironing these out on the training pitch. Not giving time to our youngsters ,Hyam should be persevered with more than he has done. The list goes on, who is responsible at the end of the day for these? ..... coyb

P.S i have wanted Jewell to succeed as much as the next person, if they are not going to release him then get in a wise older head to assist him, this format is not working and needs a thorough look at, b4 its too late, serious times still at portman road!

Befsitfc I agree about the individual errors but they happen every game. It has to be PJs responsiblity. Surely after 21 months in charge any decent manager would have cut the errors out. Can't believe he's gonna be here for another 2 weeks. JEWELL OUT!!!

So what's he been doing for the last 18 months. The only way he can give them and everybody else a lift is to leave. I thought he brought this rower in to work on our fitness?

It's all very well to post "Jewell out", but who do you all want to replace him?
The only option I can think of is Billy Davies. Lots of managers get the sack and are hence available, but . . . you have to ask . . . why did they get the sack?

If not Billy Davies, then how about Terry Butcher?

You may all want to see the end of Jewell, but you have to have a decent replacement in mind.

It will be tough to lift the players from this disappointing result. No way did we deserve to loose it.

The performance in general was good, we dominated possession and JET had a few chances to make it 2-0. tbh we restricted Cardiff for long periods of the game.

Loach, who unfortunately made two bad errors, has been very good up until this game. He will need alot of support to get his confidence back after this one.
Edwards & Martin impressed. Cresswell and Murphy linked up well down the left.

I think we are not far away, when we get Chops and Campbell back fit we can play two up front and be more threathening in the box.

The sign of a panicking manager was Sat. when he put a new recruit on (Moshni) with 2mins. to play ???? We now need 2 wins just to get out of the bottom 3 and nearly quarter of the season gone. So Jewellio you have 2 weeks to rally your troops together!!
Perhaps you should get a piece of advice from Mick Mills , he seem to talk our language
He is working on Radio Suffolk by the way, if you want to contact him ????
