Burley Interested in Old Job
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 10:32

Former boss George Burley has confirmed that he will be applying for his old job at Portman Road. The 56-year-old Scot took the Blues into the Premier League and then the UEFA Cup in a successful spell in charge between 1994 and 2002.

Speaking to Radio Suffolk, Burley said he would be applying: “Of course. My life has been around Ipswich all my football career virtually, since I was a 15-year-old. It’s in my blood.

“I’m moving back to Suffolk soon as well. Anything you can do for the club, you do. When you’ve been involved with it for so long it’s something you don’t forget.”

The former full-back recently left Cypriot side Apollon Limassol after a brief spell in charge.

Two of Burley’s team-mates, Mick Mills and Terry Butcher, have also been linked with the role.

The former centre-half looks more likely to be a potentially serious contender — terrace rumours having circulated about a Town approach earlier in the month - while Mills has been out of management for some years.

Striker Michael Chopra has suggested his former Newcastle team-mate Alan Shearer as Paul Jewell’s replacement and says he wishes the ex-Blues boss well: “A disappointing day yesterday with Paul Jewell leaving. I want to wish Paul all the best in the future.

"Now a massive game Saturday, need to get this great club back where it belongs. Who do the fans want as manager?

“I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager such a good person and worked and played under some great managers including Sir Bobby Robson.”

Former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is seen as the favourite by most of this morning’s national newspapers.

As reported last night, Dougie Freedman has completed his move to Bolton.

This list of clubs where managers have returned and failed to repeat their success is far longer than the list of where managers have returned and done well.

Thanks for the memories George but don't come back and taint those memories with failure.

George Burley is a legend! I would absolutely love to see him back. Should never have been sacked in the first place and as has been said before, all through his time in charge we were challenging for the Play Offs. Who wouldnt take that now???
COYB!

I found this a little surprising.

I would not be gutted if George was back a the Town but that said I would not be convinced that he could repeat his previous successes with the club.

Do we need a 'steady hand' or a younger 'hungry' manager? I'm kind of leaning towards the latter.

I have said for a long time that we have not had pride/passion on the pitch or stands for a number of years now...we are now praying for a messiah! (he's not a messiah...he's a very naughty boy!)

The parallels in our position with Narwich from a few seasons ago really, really worries me :(

if we are led to believe by SC looking for an experienced manager then GB does fit the bill, I'm not convinced it would work but has as much appeal to me as Curbishley or McCarthy, would like somebody younger with new ideas and a fresh approach but it may need somebody of this ilk for the short term, would like to see the coaching team be appointed from within the club or players with an association with ITFC, Dozzell, Milton, Yallop etc this obviously depends on their skills but would help to galvanise the new management team with the fans

There is a place for George Burley at the club, just in the same way that Bobby Robson was given the position of ITFC President (or something like that). His presence in the club would ensure a continuity in the club that has been lost, and a proud tradition with real values might return.
So employ George in some sort of 'upstairs' role, but to employ him as Manager would seem a huge risk to me. For what it's worth, if money is no object, go and get Holloway, he may feel he's taken Blackpool as far as he can. And it would be very entertaining in every way.

Its not just a new manager we need we also need a new set of more mature and intelligent fans.

Sentiment clouding judgment? Let's wind back - appointed Jan 1995 but did not avoid the drop (Lee Chapman - that was a desperate signing!). The 9-0 defeat (we beat them 3-2 at home earlier that season). Blew out making the play-offs last game of the next season. Choked in the play-offs the next three seasons and only scraped through eventually, despite being the best footballing side by far. Relied on a number of no 2's to help him Houston Hamilton Gorman, he never quite knew his best team. Yes, we had a great time 1st season up but abject performances the next season (e.g. Southampton at home and Bolton away). Lost the plot, had to go and did likewise at other clubs since.

Much as we loved him as a player and as a manager when things went well, he is not who we need right now.

I think he would almost certainly do a better job than Keane and Jewell BUT without the success of last time, so on that I would say no, thanks for the interest though George.

A legend here but not sure about this. He was manager a while ago now and things are different, we have different characters and not the kind of figures that helped George out so much, i.e Mowbray, Holland Magilton. I'm not sure how much the team would know about him as well which may turn them off a little. I wouldn't necessarily be against this I just think at this moment in time there are contenders that may suit the position slightly more at this moment in time. But then who am I to say.

Saying that a position in the club wouldn't go a miss and yes will remain a hero at PR due to his playing and managerial days!

I knew this would throw up a discussion, as we all remember the Burley days of building for the Premier League despite having to sell a star player just about every season to balance the books. To think that even then some fans wanted Burley out because we failed in the play-off semi-finals - oh to have that sort of problem now!

Then was then, and now is now. I have a feeling if Burley returned he would not be successful a second time, as he hasn't had success over recent years and we would probably be better going for a more 'in tune' manager who is fresh and who would immediately know targets to bring in as well as bringing a fresh motivational approach to the current squad.

Not as manager but would love to see him back in another capacity. Same applies with Wilnis, Holland etc - not at management level but to ensure we have an ethos running through the club.

For me Klug should also be looked at - if not as number 1 but as a number 2. This would mean we have a natural successor already in place for future.

Yes George had a good track record - several plays-offs, promotion and excellent first season in the play-off, but since he left town he really has not proven to be a success. Unfortunately as with PJ early success as a manager does not guarantee they will carry on being succesful.

I would much rather see George come back than Curbishley or McCarthy, etc. be appointed. IMO he should not have been fired and that is mainly what i hold against Sheepshanks, he should have resigned and left George in position. However, whoever is appointed we will need a Director of Football to protect the Manager from Clegg because, quite obviously, we are stuck with him and I can think of no better contender for that position than Mickie Mills then we would have the footballing side of Town Blue through and through. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing and nobody, but nobody has more respect for George Burley than me.
Having said that, it never works to try and recapture the past and many things in football and at Ipswich have changed since Burleys departure. Remember no manager is a success on his own and the very sad loss of Dale Roberts was a bitter and telling blow to GB. He has had little success since.
There will be much speculation over who will get the job and bearing in mind the position we are in I hope it's resolved quickly. It's apparent that the club have been seeking a replacement for Jewell for several weeks, I imagine there is a very short shortlist of 2 or 3 that Marcus Evans has in mind. Whatever happens we must get behind the new manager and the team and help get them out of this awful mess we are in. It won't be a quick fix and it won't be easy, so be patient folks!!!!

Any chance we can bring this back into the real world?

The love of the club/playing for the badge is rose tinted BS and you all need to wake up. (I appreciate your thumbs down! :o) )

The manager's position is a JOB, we want the best available person for that JOB. He needs to be able to get the best out of his players - a love of Ipswich is not and should not be a pre-requiste, if they do, then that's great, but it should be a secondary consideration to their ability/potential as a manager.

Alf Ramsey? never represented Ipswich, no association with the club prior to appointment - Bobby Robson? never represented Ipswich, no association with the club prior to appointment.

Are you saying these two gentlemen didn't do the job to the best of their ability, despite not being Ex-Ipswich...?

Now ask yourself an honest question, is GB the best available manager today or do you really just want the Burley/Roberts team from the 90's/00's? (which you know you can't have) and do you also want Jordan Rhodes back? (even if we'd have kept him, we'd have sold him by now...!)

If you focus on the person being ex-town, having a passion for the club, etc, etc, then you're selling the club short and pandering to a vision of Nirvana that very few clubs ever achieve.

Get a short list of the best available managers, interview them, get them to spell out a tactical plan for this season to get the team playing and avoid relegation and lay-out a 5 year plan to develop the club - youth set-up/squad development/areas to strengthen/scouting requirements, commit to a review after two years and then continue from there.

Alternatively, give GB the job on the strength of what happened over 10 years ago and reap the whirlwind...!

Please dont ask George Burley to come back as manager. I would not like to see his heritage tarnished. He was a great player and succesfull manager but going back wont work. Even king kenny couldnt do it for liverpool. As for Matt Holand, I think he is too comfortable in his TV studio to think of going into managment.

A warning to George Burley - It is not the same club that you left behind. Don't destroy your memories by coming back. You will have to work with that complete tool, Clegg for one.

I keep hearing the "never go back" line and i'm not for or against Burley, after listening to his interview it COULD be good to have someone with Blue blood in the hot seat. However a few years back when appointing other managers- if Sir Bobby was an option how many wouldn't have gone back then????

I still prefer to remember these Ipswich Legends now being touted as potential managers for their playing ability and unquestionable contribution to ITFC being one of the greatest teams in Europe. We are now in a very different place fighting for survival in the Chanpionship. None of these greeat players have proven to be great managers so lets remember them for their playing ability.
Manager - still favour Karl Robinson. He has galvanised MK Dons and they are a consistent team playing attractive football who will soon be a Championship side.
