Burley Interested in Old Job
Thursday, 25th Oct 2012 10:32

Former boss George Burley has confirmed that he will be applying for his old job at Portman Road. The 56-year-old Scot took the Blues into the Premier League and then the UEFA Cup in a successful spell in charge between 1994 and 2002.

Speaking to Radio Suffolk, Burley said he would be applying: “Of course. My life has been around Ipswich all my football career virtually, since I was a 15-year-old. It’s in my blood.

“I’m moving back to Suffolk soon as well. Anything you can do for the club, you do. When you’ve been involved with it for so long it’s something you don’t forget.”

The former full-back recently left Cypriot side Apollon Limassol after a brief spell in charge.

Two of Burley’s team-mates, Mick Mills and Terry Butcher, have also been linked with the role.

The former centre-half looks more likely to be a potentially serious contender — terrace rumours having circulated about a Town approach earlier in the month - while Mills has been out of management for some years.

Striker Michael Chopra has suggested his former Newcastle team-mate Alan Shearer as Paul Jewell’s replacement and says he wishes the ex-Blues boss well: “A disappointing day yesterday with Paul Jewell leaving. I want to wish Paul all the best in the future.

"Now a massive game Saturday, need to get this great club back where it belongs. Who do the fans want as manager?

“I would love to see Alan Shearer as manager such a good person and worked and played under some great managers including Sir Bobby Robson.”

Former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is seen as the favourite by most of this morning’s national newspapers.

As reported last night, Dougie Freedman has completed his move to Bolton.

My heart would want Burley back. The greatest era I was alive to see was his championship destroyers and the following season in the prem. he is an Ipswich man and I would feel more connected to the club again which at the moment I don't feel part of. Is this the right reason to want a manager? Probably not. Not a good record after us but maybe Ipswich is an environment he thrives on. It's so difficult to know what route is best experience, stature, youth, enthusiasm etc. not everyone will be pleased but I would give Burley a go.

No thankyou. A legend as a player & a good manager here in his time, but has never really cut the mustard since he left. IMO would not be a foward step.

Burley is a good manager, the only real blot on his record was Scotland. His club record is good apart from a tendency to fall out with the chairman. Although I'd love to see him back, I think the chances of a bust up are a lot higher than when he was here last. Heart says yes, head says no.

Shearer? Could any of the players stay awake through the sort of dull plodding monotone that we all suffer on MOTD? He was inspirational once though - after we'd been mauled at Man U Shearer said on telly that there are no easy games in the Prem except Ipswich at home; GB used this in his team talk when we later went to Blackburn (and beat them) in a cup game. Not exactly a sign of respect for the club but it backfired nicely.

No thanks, did his time and we had some good times under Burley but he was partly responsible (Sheep was ultimately respnsible, however) for the mess the club was left in financially 10 yeas ago.

I love George Burley, but i feel this would be a big step back in the wrong direction. We need someone fresh with new ideas! Besides, Burley's big money spending (along with the two new stands) eventually put us in administration.

@cutmeibleedblue everyone knows we didn't lost to united that season 9-0 that was 94/95. So that's a pointless comment. We were relegated because to fund our stadium being built we had to sell all our top players. No choice of burley. Burley also took over hearts for half a season, they were top for quite a while beating rangers n Celtic. The owner sacked him due to a disagreement in which hearts still finished 3rd. He was on the verge of breaking the Scottish same old. Stop trying to back up your non existent facts.
