McCarthy's Wolves Scouts Depart
Friday, 2nd Nov 2012 11:01

Wolves have confirmed the exits of their chief scout Dave Bowman (pictured) and European scout Ian ‘Taff’ Evans. Yesterday, there was speculation in the West Midlands press that the duo could be on their way to join their old boss Mick McCarthy at Portman Road.

Wolves CEO Jez Moxey announced their departures: “We would like to thank Dave and Taff for all the work they have done for us during the last six years.

“We have enjoyed some great successes together and we wish them all the very best for the future.”

Evans, who was the assistant manager at Molineux at one time, and Bowman were seen as McCarthy’s loyal lieutenants along with assistant manager Terry Connor during his time at the club he left in February.

Yesterday, McCarthy said he hadn't yet discussed the situation regarding his wider staff at Town.

Excellent news indeed.

I think getting in scouts was a priority for the club regardless of who the wanger was, the fact that Micko can help bring in scouts of this calibre to us is a big bonus.

Plus Terry o Connor is another huge and welcome bonus for the club!

Well done again Clegg & Evans, despite the flak thats been going around I think they have kept a cool and level head.

@bluefeast - who did they unearth for Wolves?

Well they no doubt were part of the set up that suggested Ebanks-Blake from Plymouth for £150,000 or so (although McCarthy may simply have fancied him). Same goes for Kightly from Grays for peanuts, who then moved for £7m odd to Stoke and Jarvis for about £300,000 from Gillingham who then moved to West Ham for £10m.

You have Elokobi from Colchester. Wayne Hennessey I think may have been bought in (although he may have been academy - remember them loaning him to Stockport).

Whether McCarthy was involved or Bowman there's no doubt they took a lot of players from the lower leagues for next to nothing and they went on to be decent Premier League players capable of being sold on for £5m - £10m.

Regardless of who was responsible it means these people will be on our staff. All good.

Great news if they come. Found players like Matt Jarvis and Michael Kightly from the lower leagues on the cheap!

Thanks for the info all. Agree that if they can turn up a few of those, we'll be laughing- that was over 6 years, right? So maybe one a season... which would be a great return- one really high quality player bought cheap and worth a lot each year. I'd probably settle for that- especially if we can return to the production line within the club that turned out Bent, Dyer, Wickam and Lee-Barret. ;-)

Superb news, they found some super players for Wolves.

Mind you although he was not cheap, they would have said get Austin. Its up to Clegg to deliver.

Its all very well saying Clegg brought in 4,000 players. But he tends to get the third or forth choices, after missing out on the top targets.

Very good appointments all round given the mess we are in. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

And while i am on the subject of tomorrow, fingers crossed for my home team Chelmsford City (where i had a home and away season ticket in my youth) against Colchester. Let's hope they can turn them over.

Good news, as I think there is lots of room for improvement with our scouting. Yes, it costs money but it can also save a fortune if a club can pick up cheap bargains rather than expensive signings on big wages all the time.

I recognised Ian 'Taff' Evans' name and remembered him from the Saipan incident with Keane (www.soccer-ireland.com/saipan/niall-quinn-version.htm) Apparently Taff and Roy didn't get along. :-)

Don't forget that these people don't just look for new players, they also have to look at future opponent and brief the manager. Its very important for the manager to have trust in his scouting staff's opinion.

I doubt if Steve McCall is sharing the same optimism!!

The scouting has been patchy for years do lets hope they're on their way to us.

I think our scouting network is due an overhaul so this is welcome news. We need to get back to finding young talent in the lower leagues and developing them at this club rather than relying on players in the twilight of their careers.

hope they join, and if they do, enjoy their time at PR.. maybe Wolves would have turned the corner and flourished if MM had been given further time 'but hey!'

The news gets better every day.
If these scouts come to us they must already know good players to recomend to Mick and terry and i sure some very good coaches will be joining us soon
I am getting very excited about this and blues are only going one way and thats up
Christmas has come early.

if as it appears they are about to join us they have a lot of work to do before January's transfer window, you would assume they have a list of players that they were already scouting so up to Clegg and co to do their bit and bring them in, something he failed to do with the majority of Jewells targets, happy days ahead hopefully
