Town Outline Reasons for Ticket Decision
Tuesday, 18th Dec 2012 08:55

Town have outlined the reasons for only acquiring 2,900 tickets for the FA Cup third round tie at Aston Villa on Saturday 5th January. Seats go on general sale this morning and with only a few tickets left on sale by phone, a large number of fans are expecting to be disappointed.

Away clubs are entitled to up to 15% of the home side’s capacity in the FA Cup, just over 6,400 in the case of Villa Park, which has a capacity of 42,788.

However, as has been the case in similar situations in the past, only the initial allocation — in this instance 2,900 tickets — is available on a sale or return basis. The club would have to commit to buy any other tickets outright and would take the financial hit if they weren’t sold.

A Town spokesman said: “The club had to make a decision on the number of tickets to buy from Aston Villa as there is a no return policy.

“With our average away attendance being 650 this season, a figure of 2,900 was deemed to be appropriate.”

It's on occasions like this that those in charge of our Club should be prepared to go the extra mile for us, the supporters.
All that would be required is to buy an extra 1,000 tickets from Villa and stand the loss on any unsold tickets.

Clegg just doesn't understand football does he? Either as entertainment or as a business.

Does he not realise that having languished in this division for a decade, playing Premier League opposition is a big deal and buying more than 2900 tickets is not a risk? Quite apart from the fact that we have a very loyal fan base for away games even at the worst of times?

If he understood the fan base he would know that they would sell twice that. I was part of the sizeable away crowd when we played Arsenal at the Emirates last season - but he probably had no interest in that...

@eatonblue that isn't the issue. Te club would certainly take an extra 1000 if they could. The problem is they have to buy all of the rest of the 6000 and then still pay for them even if they don't sell them to us. That's the sticking point here I think.

The club have had to do this because we as supporters are not attending games home or away as we have in the past so to be honest the only people to blame here are us as fans!

As a Premiership side Villa should have been much more open and allow us to buy more if we sold the first batch. not on a sale or return basis!

I am really surprised by how many we are taking, a crumbling competition, a long jorney, a likely defeat AND our away support this year has been weak - I was at Barnsley and Hull this year- not too many others were.
I do not think you can use Chelsea or Arsenal as a barometer for sales as they are in the capital, London is really easy to get to, birmingham is not and it is rubbish.
Well done the fans for selling out Villa but where the F!CK were you all at Hull in the cup last year? not sitting next to me in the cold

Are people on here asking Town to buy £60K of tickets and perhaps lose £40K just so some part time away dayers can go? Please do not come and run my company. Perhaps you should ask Waitrose (or Asda) to stock an extra 10000 turkeys in case you decide to buy one from from them this year - I am sure you can justify it based on purchasers of crisps, microwaveable food and other high fat and salt based products over the last 10 years.

@MickMillsTash if I went into Waitrose (or Asda) and they didn't have any turkeys on sale then it would hardly make me want to go and do my weekly shop there in the New Year. That's the whole point isn't it?

little me said from day one allocation was way too low.. we required at least double that.. Shocking decision once again from the relevant and out of touch with the fans staff..

Yet another Clegg cock up! Quite happy to flush our money down the drain paying useless lard arses wages like Scotland and Ellington, but tight as hell when fans are involved.

The assumption that people who waited until general sale are all "part-time supporters" is a fallacy. Some may be, but others waited because family members wanted to come because it's Christmas. Lots of former supporters, people who have moved overseas, etc etc, will be around at this time of year.

Some people on here seem to think that part-time supporters should be treated like second-class citizens. That just makes it harder to grow your business - if anything you should be trying to make them feel at least as important as your existing customers. New customers are like gold dust - they must be nurtured with TLC.

Most businesses try to attract new business by special offers - a game against Aston Villa is a classic opportunity for the club to grow its fan base for what is - really - a very small outlay. I spend more than £40k a year marketing my little business. Then you try to upsell the valuable new customers by selling them bigger things, like Season Tickets, Gold cards, Junior Blues memberships etc.

Instead of which, we have used this opportunity to p*ss off a large proportion of our existing fan base, so that it declines even faster than it has already.
