Ellington to Return From Scunthorpe
Monday, 7th Jan 2013 17:22

Scunthorpe United will not be extending Nathan Ellington’s loan having signed free agent Akpo Sodje until the end of the season.

Manager Brian Laws said: "Now that we have Akpo in there we have no finances to maintain Nathan Ellington being here.

“He has been hit and miss and it has been a bit of a stop-start scenario. We cannot afford to carry on like that.”

Ellington’s spell was up after Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Shrewsbury, which was only the 31-year-old's second start since he moved to the League One club in November, a calf problem having hampered his time in Lincolnshire.

In addition to his two starts, the striker, whose Town contract is up in the summer, made four substitute appearances, without scoring.

Meanwhile, Barnsley have confirmed that they will hold talks with Town legend Terry Butcher, who is currently boss at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, regarding their vacant manager's job in the next 48 hours.

It's one of those cases of a player being excellent in his younger years, but losing it totally before the age of 30 (is Reo-Coker another such example?). I think it'll be a case of paying up his contract, as seems to happen quite often for Ipswich. Still, at least Ellington was a free transfer and I doubt his wages were that much.

Got to go now surely never really worth signing seemed to have lost it long before he arrived at Ipswich!

worst signing ever? that would be an intresting debate.when 442 magazine ran a feature on the best and worst ever foreign signing they put jonas axeldal as the worst.peralta was bad asell and adrian paz but atleast he brought taricco with him.Wish ellington well tho i dont think he lost his ability on purpose

Ellington was a free on relatively cheap wages who could have rediscovered his form. The error was a two year rather than one year contract.

Let's hope he finds somewhere willing to pay a slice of wages.

..... are we surprised he's on his way back ?? - another Jewell legacy to ponder.
The ability was there once - but one must question the commitment and desire to succeed, here or elsewhere - far too easy nowadays to take the easy option.
Not the first, and won't be the last that's for sure.

theobald1985 - Peralta a bad signing? Can't believe that. He was a great midfielder for us. Ok, we got relegated that season, but he wasn't the cause.

Was it the old mates act that Jewellio gave Duke a 2yr. contract instead of the usually formal 1yr. contract ??????

Wouldn't even give him a call if we were short for our 5-a-side on a tuesday evening...total waste of space.

I would struggle to think of many players who have been as disapointing in a town shirt as this guy.

I would offer to pay for his taxi meself if he'd let me.

And Theobald1985, Peralta was absolute quality you must have been watching a different player!

Re. best and worst signings you have to look at it in financial terms e.g. I don't see anyone blasting Mick McCarthy for releasing free transfer Kelly Youga!

Ellington was one of Jewell's many bad signings. Jewell's flops pale into insignificants in comparison to Keane's buys though. £11M transfer fees + big wages on Fulop, Delaney, Edwards, Leadbitter, Martin, Priskin and Scotland. Pass the sick bowl...

Theobald1985 you are off your rocker. In my 22 years as a season ticket holder Peralta was probably the best signing we have made. He almost single handedly saved us from relegation. The only negative thing about him was that he was on loan.

Is JET going to prove to be a hit ? Has undoubted talent, but for me, uses it too sparingly. Hope he soon begins to realize that there are ninety minutes in a game and not just his usual fifteen.

worst signing ever?.....Pablo at £20k pw?.....twice!

But for me it has to be Bowyer, for loads of reasons.

I agree with most of the post apart from the comments 'Cheap Wages'. I will have a 'wager' with any of the above that his wages are more a week than anyone on here. In fact he is likely on more in half a week than most average people in Ipswich earn a month!!

Nice work if you can get it.

Also agree with Mark, another 'Reo Coker' that is well burnt out before the age of 30. Unebelievable, Reo Coker plays like someone with the energy ten years his elder..

Jewell thought he was worth a punt again, didn't work out.proberbly best to release him to let him get on with his career.stop start career for last few years.good luck Nathan, just didn't work out.

suprised to see the peralta love ive seen on here.i must admit i only saw him about 3 games at portman road and did not think alot too him but maybe i saw his three worst that i could believe.BORGE im not sure if your being sarcastic or not but if he is the best signing in 22 years as a season ticket holder then id suggest you havent been using your ticket very much.Marcus stewert matt holland alex mathie...i could go on and on and on.accept u think he was good but the best player in over 2 decades? whos off their rocker now

Sorry, but I've been a supporter for nearly forty years and by far, the poorest signings we've made are the one's that take the p**s, namely Jimmy Bullard(under contract) and most of all, Finidi George!!

Case closed ;)
