Ellington to Return From Scunthorpe
Monday, 7th Jan 2013 17:22

Scunthorpe United will not be extending Nathan Ellington’s loan having signed free agent Akpo Sodje until the end of the season.

Manager Brian Laws said: "Now that we have Akpo in there we have no finances to maintain Nathan Ellington being here.

“He has been hit and miss and it has been a bit of a stop-start scenario. We cannot afford to carry on like that.”

Ellington’s spell was up after Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Shrewsbury, which was only the 31-year-old's second start since he moved to the League One club in November, a calf problem having hampered his time in Lincolnshire.

In addition to his two starts, the striker, whose Town contract is up in the summer, made four substitute appearances, without scoring.

Meanwhile, Barnsley have confirmed that they will hold talks with Town legend Terry Butcher, who is currently boss at Inverness Caledonian Thistle, regarding their vacant manager's job in the next 48 hours.

Its always a shame when things dont work out for a player. As Jewel said , i looked into his eyes and saw the hunger. On that note Elington was spotted at a drive through wading into a few big Macs. Now hes back at portman road he will have a big Mac wading into him. Funny how things go full circle.

Interesting debate, what constitutes a bad signing? is it the fee paid and the return on that fee? is it number of appearances? because if you use that scenario the worst signing ever for me is Ulric Le Pen, had to be the unluckiest town player ever, played twelve minutes against bolton , cost 1.5 million and that was it. then there was karic, 700k flop. Did some joker seriously put sixto peralta in the worst players list? what about Mateo sereni 4.5m,?

So b4 any of you get carried away, Ellington was a gamble, the mistake was giving him a 2 year deal. crap he may be, but worst signing ever? probably not....coyb

For goals return Id go with Jonas Axeldhal. For costly mistakes Sereni George and Bullard. For sheer bad luck and lack of game time through injuries Le Pen. For gambles that went wrong Fish, Ellington and ingamarrsdon

Amir Karic - abysmal, expensive. Le Pen likewise and an ungrateful s£&t to boot. Croft and Thatcher too...all left sided so let's hope young Mings follows after Cresswell! However easily the worst signing ever was Roy Keane!!!!

Peralta and Pablo, both great players. Some people don't know talent when they see it.

Every team has some deadwood players. They're not incapable but are contracted to the wrong club. Ellington needs regular football and he might start playing well however it isn't going to happen at championship level and possibly not league one. I don't think he's amongst the worst signings as he was on a free.

For me the worst was Ulrich Le Pen.

Worst signing? Steve Stacey surely. But not his fault.

Don't think he was the worst signing ever, but I'm glad TWTD told us he was coming back otherwise I'm sure we would not know.

Worst ever btw was Finidi George... Had the talent, couldn't be @rsed.

finidi , sereni , and most signings in the 2001 era were mostly bad business - esp long term !!!

to be honest on a free i expected very little of the Duke - it is the 'bigger fanfare signings like those listed that represented poorer value

Theobald1985, the others are right, Peralta was a quality player for us and definitely not a bad signing. not sure what's three games you saw, as he was pretty consistent too.

Le Pen was pretty bad. Luca Civelli cost a few bob, only played a few games before being written off. He was a talanted lad and terribly unlucky with injuries but in terms of signing it diddnt work out at all.

Very recently Stevenson diddnt cut the mustard.
Serini was our player of the season when we were relegated, with relegation we couldnt afford to keep him on long term and recouped the transfer fee. He was a very good keeper. George was electric in his first few games but flopped.

brian_a_mul: Sereni was dropped for parts of the season and replaced by Andy Marshall,. THAT'S how good he was! And I could have sworn he went on a free, just to get his huge wages off the books. I don't think we got anything like the £4.7M wew paid for him back.

He had a few good games but he was not a good signing at all.

I thought Sereni was better than that. Remember we were in a relegation season and he was bound to be under pressure.

Arent we still due an Italian friendly as part of his deal?

Naa, just checked out Serinis wiki page, he was loaned and eventually sold for 500k having spent 4.5mil on him. He did have a decent season but not as good as I first thought!
The fact that he replaced the popular Richard Wright following his transfer to Arsenal diddnt help his cause with the fans either

Thats has to go down as very poor business indeed.
