McGoldrick Looking Forward to Portman Road Bow
Saturday, 12th Jan 2013 06:00

David McGoldrick can’t wait to sample the Portman Road atmosphere because he knows from past experience how special it can be.

The on-loan Nottingham Forest player, who will sign a two-year deal on July 1st, said: “Ipswich are a big club and I’ve played here a number of times when it has been rocking.

“There will be a good feeling when I play here. I also know Luke Chambers from my time at Forest and when I spoke to him he had only good things to say about the club and the rest of the players.

“It was time for a change and I feel excited about making a fresh start here. I’m 25 and a lot more mature as a person and a player. I know far more about the game than I did a few years back and I’ll take that into my career with Ipswich.

“There are some good strikers here so my first aim is to win a place in the side and take it from there. First and foremost I have to get into the team and then try to stay in it for as long as I can.

“Strikers need to score goals so I’ll be looking to do that and I’ll be working as hard as I can. I’m here because I rate Mick McCarthy as a manager and when someone like him, with his experience of the Premiership and international football, offers you a chance how can you not take it?

“He’s a great manager and for him to want a player like me made it an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. Mick has shown real faith in me and apart from watching me himself, he had a lot of reports on me and how I was doing on loan at Coventry.”

McGoldrick, named the League One Player of the Month for December yesterday, netted 17 times in his 26 games for the Sky Blues and added: “I went there because I’m not one of those players who can just sit around at a club. I want to be playing and when I’m not it hurts me.

“Coventry was a good move because it isn’t far from where I lived in Nottingham so I wasn’t away from my family, plus I played regularly and that enabled me to do well for them. It worked out really well for me.

“I think the fact that I was scoring on a regular basis made a few people sit up and take notice. Obviously, Mick McCarthy watched me and decided to give me a chance here. I felt I had to take it.”

I wish D McG all the best and hope it works out at PR. Now it's up to the fans to re-create some of that atmosphere he is talking about - the one that disappeared after the Burley/Royle/early Magilton era. There have been a few hopeful signs of late, but there is still much more to do in this department. COYB.

I haven't really enjoyed a game since the north was rebuilt. We really need more passion but it goes to show we're not as lifeless as some imply. Success can awaken the 12th man and the crowd can be the 12th man when things aren't going so well. It's somewhat a symbiotic relationship.

Agree with Steve and Marcus

Remember the 1st home Prem match 1-1 v Man U in 2000? I will never forget the noise.

As the footy gets better so will the atmosphere (eg lately v NFor & Millwall - impressive from 16000'ish fans).

Petermorris...what a memory that game is. First was game back in the premiership, and although it was 1-1 , we thrashed them really, transformed our season.

The game was special for another reason, my father had only just been diagnosed with liver cancer and was expected to live only a few weeks, my brother had been diagnosed with leukemia some weeks earlier, i worked at the ground back then, so i arranged for dad and my brother to go to the game knowing it would be the last social thing we all did together, brother was off to addenbrookes the following day. And sadly that was the case dad passed away not long after that, had his ashes buried pitch side, he is there for every kick off.

I wonder if any of the players ever realize, what our club means to us fans? Looking forward to the days of full houses and the crowd buzzing, its been a while........Coyb

Respect to you Dissboy.

Do the players understand? 'Our' players probably do, but the others? Nope. Obviously thats the reason fans don't like the Loan/Journeyman approach towards our team. MM looks to be building a solid Ipswich Town Squad and (as long as he doesn't go back to the Ireland job) - thing will start improving without doubt.

for what its worth, I understand. My Granddad died last year. He had supported ITFC since 1936. The week he died he refused to have his blood pressure taken because the machine was yellow and green....

Totally agrree - North Stand going not only lead to losing atmposphere but also our financial standing !!! Imagine PR with 30,000 WATCHING A team in the promotion slots - Since we rebuilt we have rarely played football that deserves the passion - JR and the odd game exception - I believe MM and TC will bring those days back within 18 months
